  1. englishman, This is from the RegScrub help file. May help answer you question! Purpose of Cleaning the Registry Today's computers are so fast that to say one of the reasons to clean out the registry is to speed up the computer is ludicrous. So if you think you're speeding up your computer by using a registry cleaning program, then you should re-think your strategy. Sure, you can clean the registry to avoid potential problems and that is a valid reason, but I honestly think the main reason why we all use a registry cleaner is that we are clean freaks! We hate the thought of junk inside the registry, even if it does no harm! I believe that the most valuable aspect of RegScrubVista is to remove unwanted program execution and left over junk from uninstalls, and to remove the cause of some annoying error messages or odd behavior. No Two Registry Cleaning Programs Find the Exact Same Problems If you run different registry cleaners, you'll immediately notice that some find problems that others don't. And you'll probably never find two that find the exact same list of problems. Why? The registry is simply a database that does not enforce strict rules of usage. There are some rules and standard conventions that govern how one should properly add data to the registry, but this does not prevent a lazy or naive programmer from using the registry any way they please. Registry cleaning programs work off the rules, but they also have to do some complex interpretations as well. The more interpretations, the more likely a cleaning program is going to make mistake. RegScrubVista does a reasonable job of cleaning the registry without using a lot of risky interpretations. Most well known programs use the registry properly and follow the rules and standard conventions. You may be running a program that does not follow the rules, and it is possible that RegScrubVista (as well as other cleaning programs) may flag problems that are not problems. This is why all registry cleaning programs warn you to back up the registry so you can restore if necessary. RegScrubVista backs up all data that it cleans. It also provides a simple way to back up the entire registry. For more details, see the section on Restoring the Registry.
  2. I use/try registry cleaners all of the time. After I uninstall a program I'll find the key with RegCleaner 4.3 by Jouni Vuorio and remove it. Then I'll search the program name in RegSeeker 1.45 (Hover Inc.) and it will often find files left that I'll then remove. I also use the commercial program Registry Mechanic. I've become so confident with these programs that I rarely back up any more. Despite routinely using these programs, RegScubVista found over 1300 problems and I safely removed all but one. I have a Dell, Pentium 4 and the operating system is Windows XP Home. Both Windows and ZoneAlarm Pro warned me about removing the following file: HKEY_CLASSES_Root\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU I just put it in the Exclusions folder. My computer is running great, no problems. I have read enough about reg cleaners to know they can ruin your pc but thought I'd share this option with you. Good Luck! http://www.lexundesigns.com/
  3. Thanks ridge! I'm about the same broadband set up.
  4. Fasterfox, Fire Tune or Firetweaker? I have all three, and I suspect that at least F T and Ftw are similar and have made many of the same changes. Although there is still always the chance that in some way they oppose each other and are actually slowing my pc down. Your opinion would be appreciated! FF1.5, Windows XP Home, Pentium 4, 72gig disk space and 1gig
  5. I had noticed on my home pc it uses 72,xxxk, Windows XP. I do have 1G of ram. Here at work, Win 2000 and an old computer at that, only using 28,xxxk. Do you think there is something wrong with the set up at home? Both are enabled to monitor. I don't think it ever stops anything that MS AntiSpyware doesn't and I was allowed to install it with the work license so I really wouldn't be losing anything if I remove it.
  6. I didn't have any extensions installed this morning during my two attempts to install 1.5. The other night when I discovered the problem, the first thing I did was to remove Adblock. The thing is, the first several days there were other threads about the same issue on their support forum, so I know I am not the only person that had this problem.
  7. I'm pasting my post from their support forum about the all white page back rounds and certain text that is normally in color but only black in 1.5. All of this, even though pages should load with the web sight colors. Heck, I couldn't even change the colors using the FF settings. "I tried every suggestion offered on 11/29 and 11/30, some of which were: create new profile and edit about:config. I eventually bailed and reverted back to 1.07. This morning I tried again. First I installed 1.5 "over" 1.07, white pages. Then I did a complete uninstall, removing program files, %AppData% files and using three registry cleaners, white pages only. For the two installs this morning, I even turned off all security systems, thinking that might be part of the problem. During all attempts SpellBound and Adblock (only extensions I use) were not installed. I'm back using 1.07 and all web sites are rendering normally. If you had this problem and corrected it or found the cause please reply, because I want to be part of 1.5! Thank You!"
  8. I mean in real world practical terms, not a changelog, what does it do better?. To installs (of 1.5, see my post in The Lounge) later and I'm back with 1.07 for a while.
  9. Actually I tried everything and when all else failed went bak to 1.07. I completely uninstalled including removing all program files, files in %AppData%, files in the registry and check color settings in about:config. I did all of that twice. There were no extension issues (only use Adblock and SpellBound anyway), in fact I didn't even install any the second time. I think I'll pose the question "what is the advantage of 1.5 anyway" in the software forum.
  10. I did it per directions. I did it the same way at work with no probs. Fortunately this is a minor annoyance and I am hoping there aren't any serious issues. From veiwing their support site things aren't going to smoothly, however, I can't really say it's worse than the release of their other versions!
  11. I suspect this is the same problem! http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=347661
  12. site is off the charts, you can't get in. I Installed 1.5, un-installed Ad Block, installed Ad Block Plus. Un-installed SpellBound, reinstalled. They all work fine and all my bookmarks came thru safely! OK, the problem: my web page colors are all messed up. I've configured the colors all different kinds of combinations under Tools, Options, Content and Colors with no luck. I can basically change the text colors and images are still in color but several other things aren't right. e.g. even though the backround has always been set to be white, the CC forum backround has always been a nice shade of light blue, now it'sjust white. At both MSN and Yahoo web sites, if the stock market has gone up, it will show by how much (numbers MSN or percentage Yahoo) in green text. If it has gone down it's in red text. Now they are both black all of the time. I've enabled "Allow pages to choose their own colors...", however, it doesn't matter. Any clues what is going on? Thank You!
  13. I ran a disk cleaner program from Fix-It Utilities 6, which was free after rebate one time from BestBuy. I sent the files to the RBin, however, for some reason they weren't there so I couldn't restore. During the cleaning, my processor (Pent IV with XP) gave this alarm code like four or five beeps twice. Then, like about every five minutes I was getting a single beep. I ran system restore, several Reg Cleaners and rebooted several times with no luck. I did several searches, finally finding a thread on a forum where some posters thought it might be a voltage or temp warning of some kind. I had some kind of beeps at work with Win 2000 and remembered finding all kinds of info on beeps but can't remember how I did the search. Anyway, my diagnostic lights were all green and everything was working fine, just the dang alarm every five minutes. I finally did scan disk, it didn't find any errors that I'm aware of, however now everything is fine. Any ideas what happened or what the scan did? I tell you though, I learned my lesson and won't use that Fix It again (I love CC)! Thank You!
  14. life but here goes! I was just thinking, can cleaning your hard drive all the time wear it out? I mean I know it is totally obsessive behavior, however, I run CC after every session.
  15. Well at least once a week! I discovered that if you use the speed test at the very bottom of the page in the enclosed link, it can read your router (internal) IP using Java. I don't particularly want to disable Java. I've posted the question on the Zone Alarm forum if there is someway it can hide that IP. Anyway, thought you all might be interested in this info. http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp
  16. "In practical, if you try to free memory on RAM, windows will write the necessary files or cache on hard disk instead which will drop overall system performance". I have 1G of ram and 66.6Gs of free hard drive space. Would this app make any sense for me at all? Thank You! http://www.download.com/FreeRAM-XP-Pro/300...j=dl&tag=button
  17. Nope, there were not any updates! In retrospect, I guess Arovax didn't really fix it if I allowed the change, however, I'm not sure whether I denied or allowed the change the second time.
  18. problem. This morning I was using IE to view some vendor sites that wouldn't load right with FF. Every time I opened it, however, the MS update page opened instead of google "0" updates by the way!). I even stopped it through msconfig, however, all that did was give me the nasty red update shield in the system tray. I was getting ready to post the problem here when AS informed me about an attempted MS home page parameter change. I denied it at first. That didn't work, sure enough when I opened IE it was still the update page. This time, with the AS text box opened, I allowed the change (even though I never actually changed the home page) and google was back! During all of this google would still open when I'd hit the home page icon and then I would even reaffirm it as my home page in Internet Options but dang update would only open when I'd re access IE. How did this "hijack" take place? Also, I was questioning the need for AS since I run ZA Pro, Ewidow, NOD32, MS anti spy, Spware Doc, however, I guess I'll keep it!
  19. That is when my Dell in home warranty (please, no wise cracks, 11 years of Dells with no trouble) expires. It is 2.8gh Pentium 4, 80g hd with 1g ram.
  20. RealPlayer, Windows Media and also a program called Sonic Record Now. Also, my system came with Samsung 48X CDRW. I guess one of my main questions is do I have to download it to a file first or can it just be burnt on to a cd?
  21. OK, help this father of four out. I'll call the kids if I have to, but prefer to impress them. I have Windows XP and a couple of media players (if I need one). How do I burn a song from this site on to a CD? Please walk me through! Thank You!
  22. Help for you! http://www.shellcity.net/index.php
  23. rridgely, I've been using Fire Tune, Flexbeta Firetweaker and the extension Fasterfox. I assume the first two pretty much apply the same tweaks so I'm also assuming there is no performance loss with both applications applied. Fasterfox is just kind of a cache tweak I believe, although F Tune and Firetweaker may also apply the same changes as Fasterfox. Is it indeed alright to run all these over lapping programs at once? I also optimize with TCPOptimizer.
  24. with Opera long enough to give it a fair shot, went right back to FF, but I'm thinking about trying avant, even though I probably won't give it a fair chance either!
