  1. I'm getting out of this Diskeeper Lite thing. Just now I opened PWILLENER'S Post, saw what he was mentioning, selected the 14MB+ download rather than the 84MB+. Decided to give it a try. Clicked on the installer and, "Wham" went my PC. DOS like windows were popping up all over the screen. Monitor went blank, noticed the Tower light was now amber rather than green. Shut it down, waited 10 minutes an it still would not start. Tower light stayed amber. Some where in the back of this old head I remember that somebody wrote on somewhere that a certain condition can occur on a PC that you will need to unplug the power for a few seconds, plug back in and it reset something. That's what I did and power is back. I have to many miles on this old frame to go through things like this. I removed all the download, ran JV16 Registry Cleaner and all seems to be OK. Going to stay right where I am, nothing new for me. PWILLENER - Not to blame you. It was just probably a glitch in my PC. Thanks everybody for the help. I'm gone!
  2. That was informative! Thanks for the detailed description of how things work. That brings up another subject, like Turn Off or Leave On. I'm not going to ask about that. I've got enough information in your previous post to give my old Grey Matter a good workout. Thanks for that.
  3. Very surprising! Not that I question you at all, but many Tech people from other sources will give you many different answers. Like, daily, weekly, monthly, when the system seems to drag, etc. I can see where excessive activity can wear mechanical devices and defrag must be one of them. But how much does it wear as opposed to what a lot of people think that a fragmented hard disc has to work more to read a fragmented file? Doesn't a heavy fragmented disc require the head reader to move around more while searching for the complete file? Please accept that I'm not qualified to dispute you. Just asking some questions that I don't know the answer to. Thanks for your post.
  4. Thank you. I will try the program you mentioned.
  5. But, don't you think that the Diskeeper Lite is much faster than the XP Defrag? Seems to me it is.
  6. Thanks for the reply. I'm aware of what you wrote. Somewhere on a Forum, and I thought it was here, discussion was made about another option. There was a Program download and don't remember at all what the name was, that included a version of Diskeeper Lite that is different than the one available as a free download. One was to download the entire Program and then search the folders for the Diskeeper, download it and delete the rest because the cost was high for all of it. I did that and the Diskeeper Lite is slightly different. Gives different screen windows and has more options. I'm beginning to believe it was another Forum. Again, thanks for the reply.
  7. I have recently had to reformat and I'm trying to get thing straight. I remember reading about Diskeeper Lite being part of a program download on something that I can't remember. Someone mentioned that you could downland the application, extract/move the Diskeeper Lite from it. I did that and thought this one was far more informative than the Diskeeper Lite Freeware on their site. Am I spinning my wheels here? I'm so sure I read it on this Forum. Have searched without success. Would someone put this old fellow on the right track?

    Lost DVD Drives

I tried the entire weekend to find a solution. Failed as I expected. The Dell guy is supposed to call for an appointment with me as soon as he get parts that Dell is supposedly shipping. Have no idea what it is. Should be today, hopefully. I have the older version of CD Creator by Roxio. Had to update them with XP. I like most older things that worked for me. Maybe I like older stuff because I like me!! Thanks for the note.

    Lost DVD Drives

Thank you for that information. That's what I found on the Google search except for the "Delete so and so if they are there" which they weren't. I too think CC Cleaner was the culprit in this. Last Sun evening when I usually clean up things for a fresh start Monday, I ran the CCleaner, used the Registry part and there were several things. Looked them over closely and saw nothing that was unfamiliar so ran that. I didn't make a backup because for months now I have used that and never had to restore something so quit using it. My mistake. Monday morning when I tried to start the PC was when all hh** broke out. To shorten this, I call the Dell people and for two hours they tried to find out what was going on and couldn't. They are supposed to send a Tech to my place, hopefully Monday. Don't know what he'll do. If you are familiar with Dell, there is a Dell/Symantec Restore program that comes with the later model PC and it reverts all things back to the day the machine left the factory. That doesn't work anymore, (since the All He**). Forgot to add that nothing is changed. The drives do appear now but both refuse to acknowledge that a disc is in the drive. I can't do a reinstall because I don't have a CD Installation disc. I do have a DVD with the Window MCE on it but this Dell won't boot to a DVD. Dell Tech (by way of phone) talked me through the process of trying to make it go but no luck. I have no Floppy Drive, so no Window Start up Disc. Nearly every time I start, I have to select F1 and then it ask which windows I want to start, XP Pro or XP MCE. I have never had Pro on here, only MCE which I understand is PRO with MFE embedded, less a couple other Pro things. After that, it usually goes to what you would get when selecting F8 on the PC. I choose "Last Good Configuration" as that's the only selection that will to to windows. So if the Dell Tech comes sober, maybe he can repair all. Hope so and this time I'm fortunate that I select the extended warranty.

    Lost DVD Drives

Further, did a Google search for the problem, went to a Forum Post, saw where others were having the same problem. One of the solutions was: Go to a certain Microsoft Page, edit the Registry to a designated entry and remove the "upper and lower Filter." Don't know much about the Registry but did what it suggested. Rebooted and the Drives are back and device manager shows no problems. But, No disc are recognized. Not old one with data, not new one that are blank. Get a message, "Please insert a disc in Drive **." Did that but no disk recognized. Going back to Google and look for help. Anyone that has an idea please post. Thanks

    Lost DVD Drives

I tried that, no luck. I've removed the two drives show in the Device Manager, rebooted and they come back but with the Yellow !. Tried to disable and repair. The "driver are installed but you have problems" appears. I know I have problems, but can't find the solution. Cannot roll back the driver because there are no previous drives install. Can't install a new driver as the drivers are on the Windows that were installed. This is really a puzzle for me.

    Lost DVD Drives

I had big problems recently. Finally got the PC to reboot and most all is well except: Neither Drive D nor E will show up. They show on the Device Manager but with trouble, yellow !. I've pulled the plugs, rebooted, then off, put the plugs back, still no drives show. I've tried to reinstall the drivers and get notified that the drivers are already installed. Would certainly appreciate a hint to get this working again. XP MCE Edition 3.2 CPU 1GB RAM Lite-On DVD NEC DVD. Also when opening My Computer where the drives are missing, it shows a "A Drive, a Floppy." I don't have a Floppy, never did. Mudd
  13. Telling it like it is. I suggest this applies to Dell also.
  14. zaphirer. I would pay all I had for your youth. Take care of it. I didn't and now am a wreck. Nice to hear for you. lokoike - There is a good Drug for what you have, and no you don't drink or smoke it. Prilosec, either over the counter or stronger by prescription. I have, rather had that and Prilosec was the winner. Been taking it for years. No more reflux. Try it if you haven't already. Thanks all for posting to my post. Makes me feel like I really belong. Some Forums or most are not this friendly. Seems like a very good group here.
  15. I really didn't intend to open a Can of Worms with my original. I'm still enjoying reading the comments from Forum Members. Goes to show how some people are entertained!
  16. Tarun - Keep your chin up, and your health good to defeat something else from entering the picture. I feel sure that my past habits contributes to my condition. The best to you.
  17. Great followup CaPMan. I've noticed that you have not posted recently, or maybe I missed them. I wondered if you were on "Vacation" again. I'm working on something that I need help with. Hopefully I'll get it organized tomorrow and post it.
  18. Hazelnut, a big thank you for your encouragement. I try, I really do.
  19. Tarum you must be young, or maybe just younger! I'm a senior Senior, and about two years ago I had a stroke that impaired my "short term memory" which is a real bummer. It's very difficult for me to learn anything new as I have trouble retaining what I've learned. If this makes no sense, ask someone with a knowledge of Strokes to tell you how a Short Term Memory Lose affect a person. Should you have wondered, I'm pushing 72.
  20. Thank you, all is as well as it will get! I may not post much but I read the Forum daily. Get a lot of good information here as well as some ......., but even that is sometime amusing. Hope things are going to suit you also.
  21. Thanks for the reply. I think the answer to your question, "Why didn't you Like----," is that I'm an Old Coot that has used IE for so long that something new like FF is another learning experience that I don't wish to take. I've used IE since the Win 95 days, finally learned it. Don't be mistaken by my comment. I've used FF and am sure it's a good browser. This old brain is trained to IE and FF is different I think you would agree. I tried IE 7 Beta to see how it worked. It will be fine I think when they get the bugs out. Again, thanks for the reply.
  22. I uninstalled IE 7 Beta this morning and now the link to CCleaner works properly. This seems odd to me that only CCleaner Forum was the one that I could not enter with the IE7. There were many thing I didn't like about the Beta so I'm back to IE 6. Some will suggest I try FireFox. Been there and done that, thanks anyway.
  23. I'm trying IE7 Beta and have noticed that the "View New Posts" link on CC is not operative. I don't know a way to open to see what's new! Not to say that IE7 is doing this, but it started yesteday when I loaded the program. I log into several Forums and this is the only one that is giving me trouble. Any suggestions as to what, why, or how to correct this. XPMCE 1 Gb Ram P4 3.2Mhz Mudd
  24. Thank you for the information. Yes, I have Google Toolbar. I must have changed this at the same time that I selected the Spell Check recently. Again thank you. I never realized that I did this nor did I even notice that Google had such a setting.
