    AVI files

Maybe all this is problem with the AVI files, and not the opener. Would you open the attached if you can. If so, then the file is OK.

    AVI files

WMP tools/options/ and no file types shown! Did go to the help online page, set association and it did change a little. Prior to this, nothing happened when I double click an AVI file, only the file icon highlighted. Now when I double click an icon, it takes me to the page asking what program I want to open the file with. Windows Media Player is listed there but when I choose it, nothing happens, won't open. I'm attaching a shot of the WMP/tool/options/--- to show you what I'm talking about. I have a hard time anymore to explain just what I mean. Think it called DOB! Thank you for your help. Just thought I was sending a shot of the window. Didn't save it. Probably wouldn't help anyway.

There's something called, "Turn Windows features on and off" but Media Player is not included in that. Thanks

    AVI files

Thank you. I'll try to Codec first. Probably won't do any good as I'm not familiar with that. Then if my PC is still working I'll go with another player you and login123 mentioned. Thanks again for the reply.

    AVI files

Don't see how I can uninstall Media Player. Not on the program to uninstall on Control Panel. I also have Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner's uninstall section and it's not on any. So I can forget that I suppose.

Going to try tonight or tomorrow. Will let you know how it comes out.

    AVI files

I'm aware that there are other Players, didn't know what they were, so thanks for that information. It's just the "not working" that bugs me. Before I reformatted this rascal maybe things wouldn't work. Windows Media Player did! I'm used to that and would like to have it back. A double click will open anything I have, like games, puzzles, etc., but only Windows Media Player fails. May try to update to a later version to see if that will help. System Restore helps me a lot. Thanks for the suggestion. As feeble minded as I am, may forget tha.

    AVI files

Since restoring my PC all is well except for AVI's will not open with a double click. Won't open with Media Player even with right click and "open with." I can view them with Irfan Viewer if I select that as "Open with." The Properties of an AVI shows it opens with Windows Media Player. Power Point and all else open just fine with a double click. Would someone put me on the right track to fix this? Vista Home Ser Pack 2. I seem to forget to indicate what Version of Windows I have.
  9. Please disregard. I found my way!!
  10. I have the problem downloading IE 9. So I'm now at the Host file but I've scanned the drivers more than once and can't find the file "atdmt" There dozens of files and maybe this old man's eyes are playing tricks. Are they in any order or do I just play pot luck and hope I can see it. Help please.
  11. She doesn't read the Forum but she knows her name! She may not like it much but she knows.
  12. Her name is Grouch. Can't forget that.
  13. Me also! However, I may not even know who I am if I make it to 84. As of now the only thing I'm sure of is the woman I'm married to for 53 years is still the love of my life. Anything else is, well sort of one way or the other...............
  14. I wish someone would kill this "How Old Are You." I've had 6 birthdays since I first posted at 70. If it keeps going I'll hit 77 before the year is out! No really, hope it lasts until I'm 84. Someone here a while back said something about a Birthday Party at 84!

    Power Point Viewer

To my dear Friends that have so quickly attempted to get this old man out of hot water. After the last installation, things are coming back. I can now open the PPS file, from the mail or after saving to a file. It is different, especially the Icon but all is well. Usually as you know a PPS file will take the entire screen, and no options except EXIT to stop it. Well now it has a bar at the top and at the bottom. I can click full or reduced screen. It show how many slides it contains on the bottom bar with > and <. Don't know what has happened but it now works and I thank you for your efforts. Didn't get a remark on my supposedly joke about the little boy. Was it to vulgar or just that corny?

    Power Point Viewer

No ma'am, not exactly. The file show an icon as before. When I double click one to open, it does not. So I go to "Open With" and Power Point Viewer is not there. However the XML Binary is there. I don't choose it. So go to other options and I find Power Point Viewer in Microsoft Office under Programs. I open the file and PP Viewer is there as Binary. I choose PP Viewer but for some reason it doesn't accept that. I go to Properties on a PPS File already in my system and it says the File is associated with Power Point XML Binary -F. I am unable to change it from that. I have just finished uninstalling and reinstalling from Microsoft's web Page and have the same problem. The Icon is different from what was there while working. Going to try to capture one to show you. Question: What is the XML Binary? Is is something that's necessary for the program to run? Well I see the ICON didn't make it. It very different from what I'm used to. This one only has a big P offset on the rest.

    Power Point Viewer

It's Power Point 2007. And yes I have tried to uninstall and reinstall. I've also tried to roll back on System Restore, no luck anywhere. At the present time I'm reinstalling it. I'm sure it was something I did without knowing it because early this morning it worked fine. Now it doing as I described. Just now as I was uninstalling it a message poped up and said, "you will have to turn off PP Binary file for it to uninstall. Do you want to do that? Yes or No." Well I had to check yes because it wasn't going anywhere unless I did. Also, the message said that it would be turned back on after the uninstall. What a bucket of worms" Thanks for the reply.
  19. Just today I tried to open a PP from and email and it opened fine. Saved it and later tried to open again from file and it would not. For some reason it tries to open from "PowerPoint XmL-Binary F." What ever that is and where it came from. I've gone to Set Default Associations and it will not change. I know when you first download PPViewer one needs to go to registry to change a "show" to "open" for it to open in Email. No problem there. But I can't open the file. I even tried to open with Irfan Viewer and it wanted to change file association. If I select "Open with" and then select PP Viewer it continues to use SML=Binary File. I haven't been messing around with anything. Sure would hate to loss the 432 PP Files I have saved. Not having the Office Full installed, I had to download PP Viewer to view them. All was well until today. PP Viewer is in the Folder Microsoft Office. Always before I had one file there, Power Point Viewer. Now I have two. The SML-Binary is there. If this make any sense at all, would someone help me? Getting older is affecting my explanation of things, such as: I saw a small boy sitting on the curb crying big old tears. I ask him what was the matter to make him so sad. He said, I can do what the big boys can do. I thought about it a minute, then I sat down and cried with him!
  20. mjp 28 and Moonbase - Thank each of you for the replies. Never had so many people recognize my birthday in my life. Been to dozens of parties for people having a new year added. Never in my 76 years have I had a birthday party. I'm not complaining because we lived in a remote area of the state and the nearest neighbor was miles away. Grew up when the Depression was just being to get better and people didn't have a dollar to spend on a gift. Not complaining mind you, just stating a fact. Life has been great for me.

    PC Freeze

Well my problem with the freeze is over for now. Spent yesterday, almost all day, reformatting and and installing my stuff back. Have let the PC run last night and all day today without a freeze. Think it was worth it as it's been in operation for years. It is much faster now. Something amusing is happening after the reinstall but it's unique to me so I don't want to fix it. See the attached. It's the only part of the Tool Bar that stays. Suits me O.K. Thanks to everybody that offered help. I really appreciate it.
  22. Thank you for your kind thought.

    PC Freeze

Tried all you suggested an no help, same old stuff. So now I'm in the process of restoring to Factory. I have an Acer 5610Z I'll use until I get the old Gateway doing something. If it still gives trouble, will strip out what I think is good and trash the rest. Again thanks, always respect your suggestions.
  24. Thank You Sir for the Greeting.
