  1. Just to update, tried several, none were particularly satisfactory. But thanks to Alan for pointing out (and saving me having to work out further down the line why half my programs weren't showing in it) that Revo free doesn't support 64 bit programs (a massive oversight on their part IMO). So with that in mind, and the fact that Revo Pro also tracks installs, have bought a Revo License. It's install tracker isn't perfect, but as good as/better than most free trackers, and saves having to use two programs.

  2. Thanks for the links Andavari, already have lists of programs to work through, was hoping more for recommendations from anyone that had found worthy alternatives ;)

    I already use Revo Free version, but I like a belt and braces approach (uninstall with Revo, then remove any leftovers it misses with an install tracker)

    You did make me think though, I didn't even try the last free version of Total Uninstall, just assumed it wouldn't work with Win7/64bit. Just tried it and initial impression is that it actually seems to work ok.

    Any other recommendations (if anyone has any) are still appreciated though, while I continue working through freeware alternatives.

  3. I always used the last freeware version of Total Uninstall on my last laptop (XP) but having made the move to Windows 7 I'm in need of a working alternative. Tried Zsoft Uninstaller and that simply doesn't work properly (hangs when analysing, hangs when comparing, editing tracked entries for installed apps doesn't work), so what does anyone else suggest/use for tracking installs?

  4. That's after doing a custom scan of a folder. Like I stated though it isn't a deal breaker as the previous version had some Spanish show up in the logs too, after awhile you just know what it says. Then again I don't know if Panda separates British English and American/U.S. English during installation like some software does.

    Ah that could explain it, custom scan of a folder here is in perfect English here.

  5. See here about some non-English text in the English installation showing up in v2.0. It's not a deal breaker though.

    I don't see that issue, that is presumably when scanning?

    I presume you've been trying it out too, how have you found it? I'm personally loving the simplicity of it, as close to "set it and forget it" that I've ever had with an AV.

  6. New laptop, new AV. Have decided to give Panda Cloud AV a run after only running Avira for last couple of years and so far, so good. Even if it does require so little interaction, and give no notifications of any sort, I had to download a test virus to just to satisfy myself that it was actually doing anything :D

  7. I've long since passed that point for my own computer, and have to download random software I find to make cleaners for them :P

    Usually trending ones I find on CNET or FileHippo, the like.

    Wow, if you're that enthusiastic perhaps I should send you a list of all the programs on my computer, you can do them for me :P

  8. Yes the advanced monitor runs in the mini monitor and is separate from the task scheduler :-)

    I also activated your email on my forum. :-)

    Shane

    Cool, might have to upgrade to the paid version then ;). Thanks Shane.

  9. Using the AM you can let CM perform a "clean up" every 5, 10 or 15 (or any other user defined amount of) minutes WHEN (and this is important) the memory usage of one or more user defined process exceeds a user defined memory limit. I use the AM to curtail IE9 in its memory usage when an IE9 process uses more than 100 Mb, and the AM performs that check every 10 minutes. By setting that memory limit (in the AM) extremely low (e.g. 2 or 5 Mb) for one process you can be sure that process will be kept on a (very) short leash.

    Does the advanced monitor do that in addition to the scheduled task cleanup?

    Let me know what your email is and I can check :-)

    PM Sent

    The advanced monitor int he mini monitor is the best way and easiest way to do it.

    To do it manually you will want to put cleanmem in a 2nd folder. There you put the settings in the cleanmem_settings file. And have the task scheduler run the cleanmem.exe from that folder.

    Dont use the cleanmem settings exe, it will simply overwrite your current settings on the system.

    Shane

    Thanks for the possible alternative method, the advanced monitor may well be a better solution if it runs in addition to the scheduled cleans :)

  10. I've just made the jump to Windows 7 (courtesy of my lovely new lappy :) ) and having trouble getting my head around the task scheduler. I have Cleanmem installed but I want to create an additional task that runs Cleanmem every 5 mins on a specific program, obviously only when that program is running. So I'd have cleanmem running on its normal schedule, and an additional task running cleanmem on a specific program. (I can't even work out how to get task scheduler to run a task when a specific program starts)

    I know cleanmem settings allow it to work only on a specific program, but is it even possible to have a schedule for general mem clean, and one for cleaning a specific program? (and if so how)

    (I was gonna ask on Shane's forum but it wouldn't send me an activation email to register and I know many here use it so asking here)

  11. If you don't use firefox 13+'s new 9 tab display page feature, I found out from somebody how to stop firefox from making them in the first place.

    1) Start firefox.

    2) In firefox's address bar, type "about:config".

    3) Right click somewhere, click "new > boolean".

    4) Name this "browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled".

    5) Set it's value as "true".

    6) Close that tab.

    Or just disable the new tab feature altogether (very first thing I did upon upgrading to FF13).

  12. That led to the installation of Powershadow. After CCleaner it is my candidate for software of the milinnium milennium millinneum century. With Powershadow running I can be a gadabout on the net, try out software, save and delete files in a temporary folder, etc, secure in the knowledge that C: drive will be back to normal after a normal restart. Irreplaceable software, not available for any OS after win xp.

    That's a good point, I use Returnil 2008 (newer versions were bloated and horrible) and find it invaluable for testing stuff, will be lost if I don't find an alternative to that :o

  13. I sympathise Login, still using XP here too and its pretty much all I've ever used, but the laptop is due an upgrade before the year's out so time to force myself to get to grips with a new OS (feel like I know XP inside out, it'll feel like dumping a long term girlfriend leaving it behind :P ). And from everything I've seen of Windows 8 I'll be embracing Win7 and clinging on to it probably as long as I have XP if the current lunacy at MS prevails :rolleyes:

  14. How come you can't download the winapp.ini file anymore? All you get is a text file. What am I supposed to do with that?

    the link in the text file to download it leads nowhere, btw.

    Right click and save the download link, don't just click it

  15. Please add this .... and I can't remember what the C:\D&S\username\Local Settings\Application data\ should be shortened to for all OSes.

    DetectFile=C:\Documents and Settings\Charles\Local Settings\Application Data\The Weather Channel\Desktop\patch
    Default=False
    FileKey1=C:\Documents and Settings\Charles\Local Settings\Application Data\The Weather Channel\Desktop\patch|*.*

    Firstly, we don't need the web address spammed in the entry. Secondly, that entry will only work for you (and anyone else called Charles)

    This would be the correctly formatted version, I can't test whether it is a good cleaning routine or not though.

    Default=False
    FileKey1=%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\The Weather Channel\Desktop\patch|*.*

    EDIT: Having said that, it's generally not good to have the detect line the same as the file you are cleaning so think the detect key needs changing too.

    The download of winapp2.ini file works fine in Google Chrome; so I guess there must be some specific IE9 setting preventing the download; I'll try googling further more. :unsure:

    That has always been the default action in Firefox for me, I always have to right click>save to download the ini file from the direct download, always have done as long as I can remember.

  17. Hello, this is my 1st :) post int his forum, just for a little problem: I cannot download winapp2.ini as a file (Win7 SP1 x64 up to date, IE9): if I click on the download link, a new page opens in IE that shows the contents of the file :blink: .

    So I have to select all, copy and paste in notepad, and save to winapp2.ini.

    In Win XP SP3 up to date and IE8, the file downloads as it should.

    Can someone help me to locate the problem? Thank you.

    Baud.

    Have you tried right clicking and save or "Save target as" or "Save as" (or however whatever browser you're using words it)

  18. I've been trying various programs all night and getting nowhere. Just want something to stitch together some HD mp4 vids, ideally with transitions and basic editing. That is all. The ones I've tried either don't support mp4/HD, are unstable (VLMC) or are an overcomplicated nightmare to try to work out (eg Lightworks, Jahshaka, Wax).

    Any suggestions? (WinXP)

  19. I've actually got a new entry to add for first time in ages thanks to currently trying Easeus Backup:

    [*EaseUS ToDo Backup logs]
    LangSecRef=3024
    Detect=HKCU\Software\EaseUS\EaseUS Todo Backup
    Default=True
    Filekey1=%ProgramFiles%\EaseUS\Todo Backup\bin|easeus.log
    Filekey2=%ProgramFiles%\EaseUS\Todo Backup\bin|TbLogsysClient.tblog

    A small disclaimer - easeus.log can only be deleted if the Easeus Agent service is not running. I have included it anyway as I have that service set to manual, some other users may too and it seems to get quite sizeable. And it's actually the other log file that clears the logs you see within the program itself and that deletes regardless of the service running.
