Every time I visit the builds download page for CCleaner v5.85.9170 (rel. 14-Sep-2021) at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds I see the following error: The "standard" build for CCleaner Free v5.85 can be downloaded from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download so I assume there's no critical bug in v5.85 that prompted Piriform/Avast to pull the Slim and Portable builds from their download servers. Does anyone have an approximate ETA when the CCleaner builds page will be working again? Piriform/Avast still hasn't restored the Slim and Portable builds of Speccy, Defraggler and Recuva to their respective builds pages even though employees promised back in October 2019 that these download links would be "reestablished shortly" (see Dave CCleaner's post <here>) so it's a bit concerning to see the builds page for CCleaner not working. I've shown <above> that CrystalDiskInfo is able to read the S.M.A.R.T. attributes of my NVMe SSD and I normally use Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FSRT) and/or Belarc Advisor Free for diagnosing problems on my own computer. However, if I'm helping someone else troubleshoot a problem in a user forum and only need a basic diagnostic to show me their hardware components and installed software then Speccy is often a good choice because it's easy for a non-technical person to collect and publish a Speccy snapshot (File | Publish Snapshot) on the Piriform server at http: // speccy.piriform.com/results/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx . Some forums don't allow users to attach .txt or .log files to their posts, while others only allow Forum Mods with escalated privileges to view attached files. Speccy hasn't been updated since v1.32.740 was released on 20-May-2018, and the builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/builds only has a download link for the Standard installer. On 20-Jul-2019 Avast / Piriform employee @Dave CCleaner posted in Speccy - No Updates Since May 2018 that "To confirm, updates to the client software for Defraggler, Speccy and Recuva are certainly planned. No committed dates at this point in time, but we're aiming for later this year." On 22-Oct-2019 Dave CCleaner posted in Download Link for the Portable Version is Downloading the Setup Version that "We've got a couple of broken links as a result of moving recently to a new download server. These will all be reestablished shortly." That comment was posted in the Defraggler board (another utility that is missing the Slim and Portable builds at https://www.ccleaner.com/defraggler/builds) but at the time I was told that download links to the Slim and Portable builds for both Speccy and Defraggler would be re-posted on their respective builds pages "soon". Hi johnccleaner: Does Avast / Piriform use any criteria other than hardware ID and driver date to determine whether a "newer" driver should be offered, and where does Avast / Piriform source their drivers? For example, does Driver Updater only offer drivers sourced directly from the manufacturer (e.g., Intel, Realtek, NVIDIA, etc.) and are the dates of these drivers an exact match to the same driver (i.e., with the same hardware ID and version) offered on the manufacturer's support site? Given the number of users reporting that CCleaner's Driver Updater is installing drivers with a lower version number I don't understand how this problem could only occur "if the manufacturer of the driver changed how versions were numbered". Lawrence Abrams' 28-Sep-2020 article Windows 10 is Offering a Confusing Mess of Intel Driver Updates on BleepingComputer explains why Microsoft intentionally uses an older date (e.g., "18-Jul-1968", "21-Jun-2006") to help Windows Update offer the latest driver when multiple drivers are found for the same hardware device (note: some of these backdated drivers were installed at the factory on my two-year-old Dell laptop - see image below for my current precision touchpad driver dated 21-Jun-2006). Hi Shonda: One other hint I forgot to mention, although it won't apply to you if you run System Restore after booting into Safe Mode. If you use a third-party (non-Microsoft) antivirus or anti-malware program that runs in real-time (i.e., that loads automatically when you boot up normally) and it has a self-protection feature, make sure you disable this self-protection in your antivirus settings before running a System Restore. For example, I used Norton Security for several years and their support article Fix System Restore Problems with Norton Installed recommends that users disable the Norton Product Tamper Protection module before performing a System Restore so that it doesn't interfere with the restore process. If you run System Restore after booting up in Safe Mode this shouldn't be a concern since you will only load the minimal system files and drivers necessary to run Windows and any third-party antivirus should not be loaded. Hi Shonda: What is your operating system and the make/model of your computer both and external monitor? If you have a discrete graphics card (e.g., NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon, etc.) do you know the make/model, and do you recall if Driver Update installed a graphics driver update? Is this monitor attached to a desktop or laptop computer? Are you able to boot into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking (see the BleepingComputer articles How to Start Windows in Safe Mode and How to Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode with Networking). If you can start your computer in Safe Mode using the minimal diver set you might be able to use your monitor again and follow the instructions in the support article I’m Having a Problem with Driver Updater. What are my Options? to revert your driver updates. If you can boot up in Safe Mode but reverting your driver updates doesn't help you might be able to restore your system to a previous date using Windows' System Restore (i.e., using a restore point saved prior to running Driver Updater) as instructed in the section titled "How to Restore Your System to an Earlier Restore Point" of the How-To Geek article How to Use System Restore in Windows 7, 8, and 10. System Restore can be found on my Win 10 Pro v20H2 computer at Settings | System | About | Related Settings (look on the far right of the About page for this heading) | System Protection (see image below). Hi Nohti: Given all the current problems reported with the new Driver Updater in CCleaner (including BSODs after some users allowed Driver Updater to install a driver update) I would agree with nukecad that the Intel Driver & Support Assistant (DSA) is more accurate. Be aware that the Intel DSA is not designed to scan for chipset drivers. As a general rule, the Intel DSA only finds available updates for my Intel UHD Graphics and Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers but it has never detected an available update for many of the Intel drivers shown in the images in Cleaning's 25-Jun-2021 post in CCleaner Driver Updater Scam; Fraud - Broken? Am I Using Wrong; Misunderstand. Hi Cleaning: There are multiple threads in this forum discussing problems with the new Driver Updater in CCleaner v5.828950, including installation of out-of-date drivers, or even worse, installation of drivers that cause a BSOD. See StableUser's 17-Jun-2021 Two Issues with Driver Updater and BenRiver's 17-Jun-2021 Driver Update Caused BSD for just a few examples. I've posted my personal opinion about this new Driver Updater bloatware <here> and won't be surprised if reputable malware scanners like Malwarebytes start detecting CCleaner as a PUP (potentially unwanted program) soon. If the version number of the driver recommended by Driver Updater is identical to the version currently installed, see employee johnccleaner's 24- Jun-2021 post in New Drivers Are the Same Version as Existing Ones asking users to click the 'Learn More' buttons for these driver to see if the release dates of the recommended and currently installed driver differ. Just a side note that the Intel Driver & Support Assistant can detect updates for my Intel graphics driver and wireless network adapter but does not detect updates for chipsets (e.g., like my Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver). Hi Bigeasy1302: You didn't mention if you use a Free or Professional edition of CCleaner, but osubuckeye9 reported the same issue in Two Issues With Driver Updater in the CCleaner Bug Reporting board where the CCleaner interface closes when the new Driver Updater icon is clicked, and Avast/Piriform employee Brad CCleaner suggested an install with a freshly downloaded CCleaner v5.82 installer. User bjm_ uses the Slim build of CCleaner Free v5.82.8950 (i.e., without third-party toolbars and other PUPs sometimes bundled with the "Standard" installer, available at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds) and reported <here> in the Norton Tech Outpost that the red dot on the Driver Updater icon disappeared after he ran an initial scan for available updates. Note that the Driver Updater in "Standard" and Slim builds of CCleaner Free will scan for available drivers but cannot download and install available drivers unless you upgrade to CCleaner Professional. Given the number of CCleaner Pro v5.82 users who have reported that Driver Updater either installed an out-of-date driver or installed a driver that caused a BSOD (see BenRiver's 17-Jun-2021 Driver Update Caused BSD for one example) I personally think that not having a fully functional Driver Updater in CCleaner Free is a good thing. I can't confirm that this red dot will disappear after the initial scan for drivers since I use the Portable build of CCleaner Free, and fortunately this Driver Updater bloatware wasn't included in CCleaner Free Portable v5.82.8950 (see my post <here>). If you want to test CCleaner Free Portable download the ccsetup582.zip file from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and save to any location (I normally save the .zip file on a removable USB thumb drive), unzip the .zip file, and double-click the appropriate 32-bit CCleaner.exe or 64-bit CCleaner64.exe executable to run. The first time you run a Portable build it will create a CCleaner.ini file that stores your configuration settings. I have a 64-bit OS and use the default English interface so I normally delete all the unnecessary files bundled inside ccsetup5xx.zip except CCleaner64.exe, Portable.dat and License.txt and then copy the CCleaner.ini file I used with the previous version of CCleaner into the same folder as the .exe executable to retain all my custom settings. Here's a screenshot of the Portable files on my USB thumb drive (E:\) inside a folder I created at E:\Portable\CCleaner after my unnecessary files have been deleted. Note that I'm currently using CCleaner Free Portable v5.81 and have no plans to update to v5.82 or higher until I have a better idea what Avast/Piriform is going to do about the serious bugs in this new Driver Updater feature. Finally some good news to report. It appears the bug fix in CCleaner v5.77.8448 (rel. 18-Feb-2021) that "Fixed a rare bug where Update Notifications would be shown when they shouldn't" worked for my CCleaner Portable. All settings at Option | Updates | Control Product Updates for CCleaner are still disabled ... ... and when I launched CCleaner Portable v5.77.8448 today I didn't automatically see the pop-up nagging me to update. I clicked the "Check for Updates" in the bottom-right corner of the interface link to manually check for an update and only then did I see the pop-up notifying me that minor update v5.77.8521 (rel. 04-Mar-2021) was available. The bad news it that the pop-up still prompts me begin installation of the update. Just an FYI that I launched CCleaner Free Portable v5.76.8269 today from my removable USB thumb drive and immediately received a CCleaner Product Update pop-up notification asking me to update to v5.77.8448. I clicked Remind Me Later this time and confirmed that all options at at Options | Updates | Control Product Updates For CCleaner (including "Send notifications when there is a new version of CCleaner") are disabled . If I click the "Check for Updates" link in the bottom-right corner of the user interface it just shows the same CCleaner Product Update pop-up notification shown above. Nothing seems to have changed since I started this thread on 14-Jan-2021, so I assume if I had clicked the "Update Now" button today that the updater would have incorrectly added the Emergency Updater (i.e, by adding the CCUpdate.exe file to my removable USB stick and creating the CCleaner Update task in Task Scheduler) when it updated CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe to v5.77.8448. Even if the option to "Send notifications when there is a new version of CCleaner" is enabled, you aren't going to see the prompt shown below asking you if you want to update since PatchMyPC should have already updated you to the latest v5.76. The online update check by the new built-in software updater won't detect an available update again until CCleaner v5.77 is eventually released. When PatchMyPC updated your CCleaner Portable did it add the Emergency Updater (i.e., did it add a file called CCUpdate.exe to the same folder where your CCleaner.exe / CCleaner64.exe executables are located, and do you have a scheduled task called CCleaner Update in your Windows Task Scheduler (Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Task Scheduler)? The new built-in updater added to all CCleaner Free products in v5.74 isn't the real problem, since it works as expected for installed (Standard/Slim) builds of CCleaner (i.e., it's normal for the Emergency Updater to be bundled inside installers for the installed versions of CCleaner). I have a 64-bit Win 10 Pro v2004 OS and am currently using the latest CCleaner Portable v5.76 and Firefox 85. The default search engine for my Firefox address bar and search bar is Google. At each new launch of CCleaner, the CCleaner feature at Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox always shows that all alternate search engines in Firefox are enabled (i.e., even for search engines that are disabled in Firefox at Tools | Options | Search | Search Shortcuts), and enabling/disabling these Firefox search engines from within CCleaner (e.g., changing the status from Enabled = Yes to Enabled = No) has no effect in Firefox. How I can reproduce this problem: STEP 1: Launch Firefox. Disable (turn off) all browser extensions except Malwarebytes Browser Guard at Tools | Add-ons | Extensions. Disable (click to uncheck) all alternate search engines at Tools | Options | Search | Search Shortcuts except Amazon and Bing. Confirm that Malwarebytes Browser Guard is the only browser extension loaded in the toobar and that Amazon and Bing are the only alternate search engines displayed when searching from the address bar or search bar. Note that enabling/disabling an alternate search engine in Firefox by clicking to toggle the check mark on/off is different from deleting the search engine using the Remove button. Close Firefox. STEP 2: Launch CCleaner and go to Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox. Expected: Malware Browser Guard should be the only browser extension enabled (Enabled = Yes). Amazon and Bing should be the only search engines enabled (Enabled = Yes). Observed: The status of all installed browser extensions in CCleaner is correct (Enabled = Yes for Malwarebytes Browser Guard; Enabled = No for Adblock Plus, Bitdefender TrafficLight and Save Page WE). The status of alternate search engines in CCleaner is incorrect (Enabled = Yes for all alternate search engines, including DuckDuckGo, eBay, Wikipedia, etc. and not just Amazon and Bing). STEP 3: While CCleaner is still open, disable both the Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension and Amazon search engine at Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox (i.e., highlight and choose the Disable button to change Enabled = Yes to Enabled = No). Close CCleaner. STEP 4: Launch Firefox. Expected: Malware Browser Guard should now be disabled (turned off) in Firefox at Tools | Add-ons | Extensions. The Amazon search engine should now be disabled (unchecked) at Tools | Options | Search | Search Shortcuts. Observed: Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension is correctly disabled in Firefox and the Malwarebytes icon has disappeared from the browser toolbar. The status of the Amazon search engine in Firefox is incorrect - it is still enabled in Firefox after being disabled from within CCleaner in STEP 3. STEP 5: Close Firefox. Launch CCleaner and go to Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox. Expected: The Malware Browser Guard extension disabled in STEP 3 should still show as disabled in CCleaner (Enabled = No). Amazon and Bing should be the only search engines enabled (Enabled = Yes) since Amazon and Bing are enabled in Firefox as shown in the image for STEP 4. Observed: CCleaner still correctly shows that all browser extensions, including Malwarebytes Browser Guard Extension, are disabled in Firefox. The status of alternate search engines in CCleaner is incorrect (Enabled = Yes for all alternate search engines, including DuckDuckGo, eBay, Wikipedia, etc.) and the status of the Amazon search engine disabled in STEP 3 has reverted from Enabled = No back to Enabled = Yes. CONCLUSION: The CCleaner feature at Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox should be fixed so that the enabled / disabled status of alternate search engines in Firefox are correctly detected and that alternate search engines in Firefox can be correctly enabled / disabled from CCleaner. Otherwise, CCleaner should be modified so that alternate search engines in Firefox are never listed as browser plugins in CCleaner at Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox so that Firefox users can only manage alternate search engines from within Firefox at Tools | Browser Plugins | Firefox. __________________________________ Please note that this problem with management of Firefox alternate search engines from within CCleaner was originally reported for CCleaner v5.74 in GeorgeNeilis' 24-Sep-2020 thread Problem with Firefox Plugins. I'm guessing that it was an oversight on the part of the software developers when they added a built-in software updater to all CCleaner Free products in v5.74 and didn't realize that it would add the Emergency Updater (which isn't included in ccsetup5xx.zip files) to CCleaner Portable, and I'm glad to hear you say that Avast / Piriform might need to take a second look at their use case for the Portable build to see of there's a better approach than a "one size fits all" software updater for the CCleaner Free Standard, Slim and Portable builds. I've written a few use cases in my time and know that its difficult to think of every possible exception and variation when you're in the design phase, and problems sometimes aren't caught until the end users finally get a chance to start testing the actual interface. Hi nukecad: You didn't post an image of the message you saw so I'm not sure what you're seeing, but I previously stated that the built-in automatic updater was only added to CCleaner Free products in v5.74 (see the v5.74 release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history which states "Updates to CCleaner will now be applied automatically in CCleaner Free") so you won't be able to reproduce my results if you test with CCleaner Portable v5.62. If you want to try clicking "Update Now" in the new update prompt shown below you should test with CCleaner Portable v5.75.8238 (ccsetup575.exe, released 10-Dec-2020). I'm guessing you'll also need to ensure the settings at Options | Updates are enabled in CCleaner Portable v5.75 if you want that update prompt to appear on your screen after CCleaner64.exe is launched (note that the prompt shown below appeared as a pop-up in the middle of the CCleaner interface, not as a notification message in my Win 10 notification area) . If you can't find a copy of ccsetup575.zip you could try ccsetp574.zip but I skipped both the buggy v5.74.xxxx versions and can't guarantee the software updater in CCleaner Portable v5.74.xxxx will behave the same way as the software updater in v5.75.8238. Prior to CCleaner v5.74 the "Check for Updates" link in the bottom-right corner of the interface of a Free product wouldn't offer to update your product. If I recall correctly clicking that link would just run an online check for a newer version and then open your browser on a support page on the Piriform site that included release notes and a download link for the latest "standard" .exe installer (which couldn't be used by Portable users) if your Free product was out of date. Avast / Piriform added a built-in software updater to all CCleaner Free products in v5.74 (rel. Nov 2020 - see the release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history which state "Updates to CCleaner will now be applied automatically in CCleaner Free"). I use CCleaner Portable and saw the pop-up below after manually launching CCleaner Portable v5.75 from a removable USB stick (i.e., by double-clicking CCleaner64.exe) on 14-Jan-2020 and decided to test the new built-in updater by clicking "Update Now". I was surprised to see that update not only downloaded the Emergency Updater (CCUpdate.exe) to my removable USB stick, but it also created a scheduled task called CCleaner Update in the Windows Task Manager that is triggered every 12 hours (and once at every boot-up) that continually fails with an error because the task can't find the CCUpdate.exe file located on my (normally) unplugged USB stick. I clicked the "Update Now" button because this was the first time I'd ever seen that prompt and was curious to see if the automatic updater would work correctly (which it didn't - something I've tried to report repeatedly in this thread without success). I don't know if it's relevant, but I never used CCleaner Portable v5.74 because there were multiple bugs reported for that version, and I skipped from v5.73 (rel. 26-Oct-2020) to v5.75 (rel. 10-Dec-2020) (note that I unzipped ccsetup575.zip on 11-Dec-2020 in a new folder on my USB stick and started with a fresh ccleaner.ini file). That might be the reason why I've never seen this prompt before. If there is a feature that doesn't work correctly in a software product then it should be fixed by the software developers. You don't blame the customer for clicking on a button or choosing a configuration setting that should never appear in the user interface in first place if it's going to cause problems. At least that's what I was taught when I studied system analysis and design and software programming at college. Thanks to the Forum Mods for their suggested workarounds, but I think we've already established that I can delete the unwanted Emergency Updater (i.e., the CCUpdate.exe file and scheduled CCleaner Update task) or just stay with my previous method of updating to a new version of CCleaner Portable by unzipping the ccsetup5xx.zip file from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and replacing all the older files except ccleaner.ini. The reason I created this thread is because I wanted to know if Avast / Piriform is aware that the Emergency Updater is added to CCleaner Free Portable v5.76 when users update using the new built-in software updater (introduced in CCleaner Free v5.74 in Nov 2020) and what they plan to do about it. That is something only an Avast / Piriform employee can tell me. If Avast did not intend to add the Emergency Updater to CCleaner Free Portable when the built-in software updater is run then this problem should be fixed. If that means tweaking, disabling or completely removing the built-in software updater from the Portable build then I'm fine with that. The release notes <here> for v5.74.8198 (released 11-Nov-2020) say "Updates to CCleaner will now be applied automatically in CCleaner Free" but I've never seen a warning anywhere that using the built-in software updater will corrupt CCleaner Free Portable by adding the Emergency Updater. I know many CCleaner Free users who switched from the installed Standard/Slim builds to the Portable build when the Emergency Updater was introduced in v5.36 in October 2017 and I'm sure there are even a few "advanced" users who didn't realize what would happen if they clicked "Update Now " when the new built-in software updater prompted them to update to v5.76.8269. I have no problem continuing to update my CCleaner Portable by unzipping the ccsetup5xx.zip files and manually replacing older file versions, but perhaps Avast / Piriform needs to change something so that Portable CCleaner users who have the portable.dat file in the same folder as as CCleaner.exe and/or CCleaner64.exe files either can't update automatically or can't add the Emergency Updater (i.e., can't download CCUpdate.exe and add the the CCleaner Update task in Task Scheduler). I deliberately chose the option to Update Now because I wanted to update CCleaner Portable to v5.76.8269. My problem is that the new built-in software updater (added to all CCleaner Free builds in v5.74) delivered a "new" (at least new to me) file called CCUpdate.exe and created a task called CCleaner Update in Task Scheduler (note that this scheduled CCleaner Update task always fails because CCupdate.exe is located on a removable USB stick that is rarely plugged in to my computer).
