  1. Stop error's can be the cause of buggy hardware drivers, or buggy software.

If a program has some sort of conflict/problem in the memory it can also cause it, most programs that have a problem as such won't function correctly without a reboot -- however it's rare.

    Edit:

Forget to mention if a program that's resident isn't fully compatible with your system as in the installed video drivers, etc., it can also cause annoying problems.

  2. You don't by any chance have the My Documents folder mapped as a temp directory do you. To find out where your system temp directory is mapped to start a command prompt and type in: dir %temp%

It will list the location of the temp directory.

Another thing make sure you haven't inputted the My Documents folder in CCleaner under: Options->Custom

  3. To clear something up, what exactly did you push:

    Cleaner tab - Analyze:

Only detects what is removable, doesn't actually delete anything.

    Cleaner tab - Run Cleaner:

    Deletes what is removable.

Issues tab - Scan for Issues:

Only finds invalid registry data and invalid shortcuts.

Issues tab - Fix selected issues:

Removes the invalid registry data and invalid shortcuts that Scan for Issues listed.

  4. I've never heard of CCleaner wanting to delete actual files in My Documents. As a precaution against accidental lose for everyday computing you should be making backups to another disk or a removable medium such as CD-RW, CD-R.

I'd recommend before you actually attempt to clean that you post of screenshot of what the Analyze button lists so we can better assist you. To give us a screenshot of only the open CCleaner program press at the same time on the keyboard the following buttons: Alt PrtScn

  5. That's one reason why I just over-install newer versions, hence the settings remain intact.

It would be nice if CCleaner could export the settings to a .reg file just like WinRAR does, and if doing a clean install it could recognise that .reg file and automatically import it again just like WinRAR does.

  6. Via CCleaner's Tools->Startup you can happily go about messing with startup programs. A much safer approach versus deleting a startup entry from the registry is to click Start->Run->Type in: MSCONFIG

With MSCONFIG you can safely disable a startup program without permanently deleting it.

All antivirus programs have the ability to allow you to disable their resident protection because the vendor's know there will be situations when the resident protection has to be disabled, such would be the case when installing a Windows service pack.

If you don't want antivirus with resident protection you may want to look into ClamWin Free Antivirus. It's freeware and its daily signature file is updated almost everday.

  7. Another download location, this one is zipped and includes the WhatsNew.txt document.

  8. Microsoft Windows XP Royale Theme by Microsoft (673 KB) - download

Note: To download it you have to use Internet Explorer and Genuine Windows Advantage.

    1. Click the Continue button to validate your Windows installation on the first page you get to.

    2. From the list of downloads, click royale.zip. The package inside of the .zip will automatically install the theme for you.

  9. Still have an update problem, even on that product

Starting with v2.16 the integrated update feature no longer was able to check for updates anymore, at least in my case it has failed each time. Neither of their websites this one and this one have been updated for months to reflect that there's a newer version other than v2.15 available, hence the reason I listed the FileHippo.com URL for downloading.

    Edit:

Just put my feet in my mouth. Now v2.18 can check for updates again.
