  1. I had a similar problem. When I ran ccleaner ('analyze') it DID tell me it was going to delete LOCAL SETTINGS/TEMP files (which were huge...640MB). I choose not to run the actual cleaner. Then when I ran it minutes later it DID NOT select these files.

CCleaner will detect junk files located in your user profile 'Local Settings\Temp' folder. You'll need to run CCleaner during a session in each user account in order for it to delete the junk in those folders for each and ever user.

About the files disappearing or becoming unselected, are you sure you didn't click the big 'Run Cleaner' button beforehand.

    Edit:

Sorry to add any confusion! Maybe CCleaner won't detect those files in that folder. I forgot I've had it set since the beginning of my CCleaner usage on my system in 'Options->Custom' to delete that folders contents.

  2. Blah (if only there was a hurl emoticon). I've used Quintessential Player before on many occasions only to find the volume control broken, and various other annoying factors that always sent me flying back to Winamp. I honesty don't think anything will ever replace Winamp for me as long as I use MS Windows.

  3. I also don't think you need it especially since you have 1 GB of RAM. Some caution needs to be used with the RAM refresh/defrag programs as I remember a few years ago when some of them were messing up systems when users were trying to free too much RAM.

    Edit:

For some reason I've noticed over the past few years that running Ad-Aware's smart scan seems to refresh the memory.

  4. I actually think the online virus scanner is pretty good, albeit it gave me one false positive. I don't know what the virus scanning technology is based upon, however Microsoft did acquire RAV Antivirus one or two years ago. The online virus scanner is one of the few that can actually scan inside of RAR archives. It's also a fast virus scanner which reminds me of eTrust EZ Antivirus.

Forget about the cleanup tool it has, it doesn't find anything that CCleaner doesn't already find.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of something really useful from Microsoft. I'd love to see Microsoft release a downloadable program that will combine virus scanning, and antispyware all in one application, and of course be free of charge.

  5. Trend Micro CWShredder 2.19 released

Download the standalone .exe (520 kb) from FileHippo.com, MajorGeeks.com or TrendMicro.com, or use the integrated update manager built into CWShredder to download the zip package (242 kb) from Trend Micro.

None of the downloads included any documentation!

Strangely enough this new version is the same size as the old one byte for byte.

    Edit:

    Added an additional download site.

  6. Perhaps an issue:

The startup scan for Windows doesn't automatically exit the application after the scanning is done. Is that intended to be that way or not, since I noticed the startup parameter is using the /s switch which I assume is meant to represent silent.

    Definite issues:

    * Deep Scan finishes just as quickly as the Smart Scan on my system; WinXP Pro SP2.

    * Some (not all) HOSTS file blocked sites that are in the proper format (I double checked):

    127.0.0.1 ? ? ? localhost

are seen as a hijacked HOSTS file. Please note: 127.0.0.1 localhost listed in the code above is just what I used as an example.

  7. A 'secure shredder' option would be a great function in CCleaner.

MrG the CCleaner developer has already eluded to the inclusion of secure file deletion in this post. Just give it some time before CCleaner will securely delete files in a future version.

  8. Save this into winapp2.ini. If you don't have a winapp2.ini file create it. winapp2.ini is in the same folder as ccleaner.exe:

    [Opera 8 (Single User)]LangSecRef=3027Detect=HKCU\Software\Opera SoftwareDefault=TrueFileKey1=%ProgramFiles%\Opera\profile|COOKIES4.DATFileKey2=%ProgramFiles%\Opera\profile|cookies4.dat.sbsd.bakFileKey3=%ProgramFiles%\Opera\profile|GLOBAL.DATFileKey4=%ProgramFiles%\Opera\profile|OPERA6.ADR.SBSD.BAKFileKey5=%ProgramFiles%\Opera\profile\CACHE4|*.*FileKey6=%ProgramFiles%\Opera\profile\cacheOp|*.*

    Edit:

Also get into the habit of installing programs into their default directory that their setup program suggests, since that's where CCleaner will look to clean their litter.

  9. It says in the dictionary it's the fruit of a trailing plant which is used as a vegetable, so take your pick!

    It's edible.

  10. WMP becoming crap is your opinion. Newer versions have so much more functionality over 6.x since people can rip audio (insecurely, and hopefully not .wma) and have a good database of what they've ripped readily available.

  11. Try open it with Notepad?

Then you might be able to manually extract out the contents, however you will loose all text formatting.

You're not to far off however the Notepad replacement metapad can open with formatting MS Word saved .doc files. that have been saved as 'Word 97-2003 &6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc)'. It can open Word 2003 formatted files however the file formatting will be completely lost, and as Eldmannen already stated you may be able to extract from the file. It probably wouldn't hurt to give Wordpad/Write a try to see what they can get from the file.

  12. If you're creating a scheduled task via Windows Scheduled Tasks just create a link to normally run ccleaner.exe. Then edit the program to run so that the parameter looks like this (including the quotes):

    "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\ccleaner.exe" /AUTO

You'd use the same parameter if you wanted to create for instance a desktop icon, or All Users startup folder link to automatically and silently run CCleaner.

  13. "That was 3 years ago! I just wanted to backup my Windows 3.1 disc because there's only 3 left in the world and Microsoft wants $249.00 for one and I'd have to turn in the one I have so I still wouldn't have a backup and..."

"SHUT UP! I'm sure Mr. Bill Gates would be interested in your little plan to deceive Microsoft! HOW DARE YOU!"

    Ha ha ha!

"Are you calling your computer a liar? Before you answer that you snot-nosed little twerp perhaps you'd be interested to know your printer has verified everything your PC told us. And how do you explain the giant pile of blank CDs over there next to the meth lab? Looks like a plan to flood the third world with black market Neil Diamond CDs forcing Sony into bankruptcy and thus bringing down the entire US economy you communist sympathizing freedom hating wacked out psycho."

This takes the cake, talk about freakin' funny!

  14. Many people also prefer Windows 98 due to the simplicity, low system demands and light-weight.

    22072[/snapback]

I myself don't prefer it, I can't stand the OS rot that eventually allows it to self destruct, and the overall sluggish performance would suggest if Win98 had feet it would constantly trip all over its own feet. I do however miss not having a DOS mode in NT based OSes formatted with NTFS for the simple fact that a DOS mode allows for easy removal of some nasty stuff, and since there's a plethora of DOS tools that I miss on a daily basis.

  15. The bill, outlined by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at an anti-piracy summit, would widen intellectual-property protections to cover those who try but fail to make illicit copies of music, movies, software or other copyrighted material.

Now stuff is really getting to sound more like piracy is being considered like murder. I can only imagine watching the news when someone is convicted of Attempted Piracy and give 25 years to life for it. Captain James Hook must be laughing in his grave at the sound of such two words: Attempted Piracy

  16. 256 MB Ram on an XP system is half of what is recommended and what most computer manufacturers ship as default. However I'd recommend at least 1 GB of Ram if your system will support that much, that is after you run your virtual memory test.
