Agree - I found that I had to add quite a few directories with the "Include" button (Win XP, SP2): C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache\*.* C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\ERRORREP\*.* C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\DataColl\*.* C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\*.* etc ... These clean out snapshots and updates ... Question: is there some way to find out what CCleaner cleans by default? Tnx

I can't say that I have seen this happening - in fact I see: - 180Mb in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download going back to 2007 - 600Mb of KBXXXXX updates in C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ going back to 2008 ... - 500Mb in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles so all-in-all ~1.3 Gb that could be freed up

Defragging is a bit of a black art, i have found ... but usulaly when the disk is getting to 80-85% full ... but you have plenty of space Did you checked if your are running restore points? Have you tried disabling them?

I found the same ... a number of obsolete files in ../CCleaner ... which were gone after the re-install. The ../CCleaner/Lang/ files are still there

I think it is excellent that you guys improve and update CCleaner regularly - I wish M$ were that diligent with maintaining their s/w This is one of the reasons why CC is one of my favourite utilities!!! You might want to consider a semi-automatic update mechanism that downloads/installs/restarts automatically? EM

It seems that the "Priority" setting is not saved. If I set to Background and close the program, after a restart it is back to Normal... Is this a bug or a feature? I would prefer the setting to be saved, as DF slows down my computer a bit in normal mode. (Yes, I have scheduled it to run at 4am and yes, I do sometimes need to work then...) Please let us know EM

I think Giga wanted CCleaner to "clean-out" his old thumbs.db files, just as it cleans out other old/unused files - NOT prevent them from being generated/used. So disabling the thumbnail view is probably not a solution ... BTW, I tried to add the thumbs.db files via "Options -> Include", but that only allows whole directories and indevidual files, not thumbs.db files across the whole disk... Sooo, dear Piriform, can you help? Thank You .E.

Agree with Deep - I also want to run the registry cleaning function automatically from Scheduled Tasks in XP... I suggested this some time ago, and the Piriform answer seemed to indicate that they were wanting to protect us from ourselves Or they are just lazy ... .E.

Yea ... but self-updating would be much easier for the noobs... So I support a self-update function with "ask me what to do" and "Automatically Download and install the update" options - just like Firefox! EM

Yes - maybe when there are as many extensions and plug-ins as for FF I will consider changing ...

If you delete the hotfix uninstallers, you will not be able to uninstall the hotfixes installed on your PC - so make sure they are working OK before you uninstall! Em

Aren't the (optional) "Save Registry" and "Fix all Registry Issues" already standard CCleaner functions? ... so all I am "foolishly" asking for is the small additional step that CCleaner can be set to "Fix all Registry Issues" by default and then run automatically.. Of course, anyone doing their first scans with CCleaner should carefully look at BOTH the files and the registry keys that CCleaner suggests for deletion ... However, I have been running CCleaner daily for over a year and "foolishly" click "Fix all Registry Issues" every day ... so I would be quite comfortable with the proposed auto-registry-clean feature. Em @Andavari: I don't think the posts in this thread are suggesting CCleaner be more aggressive or that the current CCleaner default functionality be changed - all that RDolce asked for is an "auto-registry-clean" command-line switch for advanced users...

As most of us, I am using CCleaner to keep my Windows (XP Pro SP2) installation fresh and prevent the dreaded slowing down and even problems/crashing as the installation gets more and more gunked up with c..p ... One cause of problems is the accumulation of expired or unused devices. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> View -> Show hidden devices to see them. You may need to go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables and add a variable "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" set to "1" first. Clicking on your hardware list, you will then see many grayed out devices that are not used, remain from old installs, etc. Particularly bad are USB sticks, which I have seen to leave dozens of obsolete device drivers... I have found that these device drivers are responsible for many peripherals, eg USB sticks, printers, ext drives, wireless interfaces, etc not installing or working correctly... It would be FANTASTIC, if CCleaner could clean these out - this would let my PCs run much more reliably... It would be necessary to have a "do not delete" list (like with the cookies) as some device drivers need to be kept. Piriform, can you add this? Many thanks :-) Em

Agree with the change requested above ... If you have other programs open while CCleaner is running (which is not advised, but can happen if you are running CCleaner automatically as a Scheduled Task), they may have work files in the temporary directory - which you DO NOT want CCleaner to delete... I support pp999 and burtman that the time setting (currently 48h) should be made flexible, including "0h" to keep keithuk happy Em

I would also strongly support an automatic registry clean switch ... I too run CCleaner automatically every night using Task Scheduler. Keeps my PC in good shape! Unfortunately, I still need to do the CCleaner registry cleaning manually.. WHY? Piriform, please add this switch! Em
