  1. Hi Henri, and welcome to the forum.

Yes, disabling UAC is a bad idea.

This is normal for a program that needs elevated privileges.

The only way I know of is to start CCleaner and then minimize it to System Tray.

Options > Advanced > Minimize to System Tray.

You will need to open CCleaner and minimize it to the tray after each restart of Computer.

If you don't use CCleaner that often, UAC may be the way to go so you aren't running an idle process.

  2. Hey Superman,

Leave the Cleaner > Windows > Advanced section alone for now.

Have a look at the CCleaner guide to familiarize yourself with the program. (See the link below)

We will be here if you have any more questions.

  3. By now I did remove enough norton.I am looking others malware solutions.Do you have any sugestion?

  4. Are you going to try the Norton Removal Tool?

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products, Norton 360 and Norton SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.
  5. The windows deleted the name of the norton of the listed programs on my first trying, but I found a document of text with 2007.

If you already uninstalled the program using Windows, could you explain what you are trying to do?

I'm sure there is much leftover on your machine. You can try re-installing and then running the Norton Removal tool.

I don't think you can run the tool, if you already ran the Norton program uninstaller through Windows.

Since Norton was installed on your computer when you bought it, you may not be able to install it again without a key for the program.

Update: You may be able to run the Norton Removal Tool even after you already uninstalled it.

If the product is currently not installed on your computer, check the Product Key at the back of the CD sleeve, or in the confirmation email that you received from Symantec for your download purchase. Once you write down the Product Key, go to STEP 3.

You don't need the key if you aren't going the reinstall Norton.

  6. I'm going to add some comments and questions to your post.

Hi Jamin4u, thank you for the welcome, and the reply.

Do you agree that your experimenting and tweaking, may have caused the original problem?

It has always been like that. My laptop came with Vista home Premium Sp1 installed...which i promptly removed (it's an Acer laptop, so you can just imagine all the useless crapware that was on it out of the box.) Before i removed it though, i 'experimented', testing which services i could disable, tweaking UAC to my liking etc etc, and in the process of doing that 'experimentation', i installed CCleaner, and all those startup items were there even then.

Did you do any more experimenting or tweaking after the clean format/reinstall?

When i done a clean format/reinstall of Home Premium sp1, installed CCleaner once more, the startup list, again, still had all those entries...moving on a bit, installed sp2 beta; for anyone who hasn't installed it, you're in for quite a surprise when it's released...it's still a beta just now, obviously, but my comp is a fair bit faster, and more 'solid' feeling than with sp1, oh, and the boot time was cut quite dramatically too, without using readyboost...anyway, i'm digressing :P Installed sp2 beta, and all the entries are still there in tools/startup.

This is not normal in XP or Vista to have only one item listed in startup.

In your original post, you stated that avgtray.exe is the only item listed in your desktop (xp sp3) . I find this to coincidental. Is there something common here to cause this?

When i run msconfig, things are as they should be, the only entry in startup there, is the avgtray.exe one.

Also, if i right click on any of the entries (excluding the avgtray.exe one...that will disable/enable, and uninstall as it should) and select disable, i get a message that reads 'failed to enable/disable startup item, access denied', and if i try to delete any, the delete confirmation message appears, but when i select yes, nothing happens.

Sorry for making such a long post, but i wanted to get as much info in as possible. :P:blink:

Oh, and just to clarify, before i replied to you, i installed the latest build of CCleaner.

Startup (user) - the current user's Startup folder in the Start Menu.

If you look in All Programs > Startup, is that where all the items are listed?

Please post your comments and answers and I'm sure someone will jump in to try and help you.

  7. Hi john7, and a Happy Thanksgiving welcome to the forum.

Go to Cleaner > Applications > and look for Google Toolbar and clear the checkbox.

I don't use the toolbar, but I think this will do it.

Take a look at the CCleaner Guide. (See the link below)

If you have any more questions, we will be here.

  8. This seems like a good idea.

Alternative browsers with add-ons for added security, such as NoScript, Adblock Plus etc.

    I have a few questions.

    1. Firefox 2 or 3

    2. MVPS Host File yes or no, and will it protect all browsers?

    3. Will any of this have a conflict with IE7 or Spywareblaster?

I have been free of nasties using IE7 with IE-SPYAD, the Active X and cookie protection of Spywareblaster.

Since IE-SPYAD is not updating, I need to make the switch.

    Thanks

  9. Firefox with Noscript run through Sandboxie whilst in Returnil mode inside a Virtual Machine with the real system in Returnil mode as well.

Ghost images and a clone on a spare hard drive.

And a couple of spare computers.

    :lol:LMAO

Hey Humpty don't forget your tin foil hat you might be vulnerable there
  10. Hello scapelands, and welcome to the forum.

This topic has been discussed before.

If you use the search function with keywords like external drive, it will provide many results.

Here are two with similar replies by Augeas.

  11. This is a PM I received from tnfarmer.

    Jamin,

I think I (we) have solved it. I downloaded Internet Explorer version 7 and then ran CCleaner, and all the embarrassing addresses have disappeared. Thanks for all your help ... everybody's really.

    Tnfarmer

Glad you got it sorted out.

We will be here if you have any more questions.

  12. tnfarmer, do you have this item selected in CCleaner?

Cleaner > Windows > Internet Explorer > Recently Typed URLs

If not, please select it and run the cleaner.

Open Internet Explorer, turn on Auto Complete and look for those addresses.

In my first post to you, I typed History to describe Recently Typed URLs sooo....sorry.

Thanks YoKenny for making me see that.

  13. Cleaner does its job cleaning history in Internet Explorer 7.

The only addresses showing on the IE address bar when certain letters are entered are in my favorites.

    Works for me:

I thought that Recently Typed URLs in Windows Internet Explorer should clear them but it does not.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs
