  1. Your favorite website is the front page for Wikipedia? Have you no shame?

Here's a good website to check out daily...IOTW

I wanted to appear somewhat desperate for some new sites to check out.

It appears that my trolling caught one.

Thanks Corona, I'll take a look at your suggestion.

Thanks JDPower, I had a problem with your link.

    Any others?

  2. I'm afraid Outlook Express doesn't compact your email files/folders periodically or automatically you have to do this yourself. File/Folder/Compact All Folders. ;)

In XPSP2, the registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 where GUID represents the Identity Number) has a new value ("Compact Check Count") that is incremented with each closing of OE. When OE is closed and this value reaches 100, then the user is prompted to compact all the folders. Only if the user agrees to compact such does the "Compact Check Count" get reset to zero. Otherwise the user is continuously prompted until they agree to compact. However, if this occurs during a machine shutdown, the shutdown can interrupt the compact process and result in message loss.

Consequently, if prompted to compact, then the user should agree to the compaction and leave the computer alone until it is finished.

    That's what I meant. ;)

  3. Thanks! I use Outlook Express, and the tech who tried to recover them said that they definitely had been deleted by CCleaner.

    Hi gslc,

Would the tech care to share some facts on how that conclusion was made?

The .dbx files in Outlook Express can become corrupted by e-mail Anti-Virus programs.

When this happens the data in the inbox that the VirusScan program corrupted is deleted.

If you are pre XP SP2 then Background Compaction may be the problem. It's turned off by default with SP2.

Since SP2 files are periodically compacted by Outlook Express, if the process is interrupted then all data can become corrupted and lost.

I saw this happen on my sisters computer, she lost the inbox and folder content.

One other possible cause is an extremely large size of Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx and Deleted Items.dbx.

You could use a backup program.

Under Backup Programs click on OEBackup.

  4. Thanks, Jamin, but I didn't see any references to the slim version anywhere, until I clicked Download, with the intention of perhaps picking up the portable version. Only then were the options presented. May I offer the suggestion to have some references to the Slim Version in the general product information page?

If you want the portable version, you can find it here.

  5. @Jamin4u: Thanks for the welcome (and to the other welcomers as well). It seems the size of the new version has almost tripled versus the one I have. What additional useful capabilities would there be for updating?

I use the slim version myself. (No Toolbar)

Have a look at the Piriform Documentation site for more info. (see the link below)

  6. Saving the ini file does save the list of cookies to keep.

You can view the ini file by opening it and scrolling down to cookies to save =.

Here's a comprehensive article on how to export and import favorites and cookies in IE.

I'm sure that Firefox and other browsers have similar methods.

  7. Oh okay. I PM'd Hazelnut about this. Glad to see it's just a spam. Yes, a bit on the freaky side. Time to take out the trash.

I think they know since DennisD, Andavari and TwistedMetal posted on this topic.

BTW this is a first for me on this forum and I hope its the last.

  8. Your situation sounds similar to another user that was able to find the list of cookies to delete on another drive. CCleaner does access other drives with the new wipe free space option. I'm trying to determine if there is a bug of some kind. If your backup drive shows up in Options > Settings > Wipe Free Space drives, and you have a backup with cookies on it this may be where the list is coming from.

Please read posts 14 through 17.

  9. The only ways I know of CCleaner being able to access other drives, is through the include option and the new wipe free space option that was implemented in February.

If you want to you could exclude C:\*.* drive to avoid any future problems. Options > Exclude > Add Folder > Select C drive then click OK.

The problem may be the way you've set up your drives as well as a change in CCleaner. The main thing is that your happy.

    Nice work! :D

  10. As far as I know, CCleaner will only analyze and clean the drive and operating system it is installed on like C drive.

Did you empty that folder to see if that clears your cookies to delete list?

Some users use the options > include to custom clean files and folders on other drives keeping in mind this is an advanced option and should be used with caution.

Those files were in WINDOWS/COOKIES on that drive.
  11. Yes that is correct, it contains all of your settings = true or false, cookies to save and so on.

    "CCleaner Configuration settings"

I see your using the latest version of CCleaner "2.21.940".

Yet you have winreg and winsys in your CCleaner folder.

This change took place 25 versions ago.

    v2.01.507

    --------------------------------------------

    - Files winsys.ini and winreg.ini are now embedded in the EXE.

  12. You could try a reinstall.

First save all settings to INI file.

Options > Advanced > Save all settings to INI file.

Go to program files > CCleaner and copy the CCleaner Configurations INI file and paste it in a safe location.

Uninstall CCleaner and download a new installer from http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

    I use the slim build.

After install paste the INI file into the CCleaner folder.

By default, CCleaner's settings are saved in the Registry. If you select this option, they will be saved to the ccleaner.ini file in the CCleaner program directory.

You can use this option to copy your CCleaner settings to a new computer just by copying the ccleaner.ini file.

Also, once you've selected this setting, your desktop CCleaner installation is now a portable installation. Simply copy the contents of the CCleaner program directory onto a USB drive and you can use it on any other PC.
