New version & Hidden Files...

Hi, Ive been using CCleaner for a long time now and everything has run smooth, really good app.. but since I installed and ran teh latest version my PC reset the folder options on all folders and when I change it back to how I want them, it wont save a couple of key settings for me...

1 - hide extentions for known file types ... this will no longer "lock" by that I mean, I can turn it on and off for the windows session but when I reboot my PC its reset to hiding them.

and 2..

Show hidden files and folders... as you can see by the screen shot below for some reason windows now has both options selected, and when I just select Show hidden files and folders.. and apply it, it doesnt work.

I wonder if any one else has had this problem, is CCleaner has reset something? ... Ive never had this problem before and always had my windows seyt so I could view file extentions and show hidden files and folders.

Knowing what CCleaner does I'm v-surprised this has happened but I cant put it down to anything else cos it the problem only started after my first clean on the newest version.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Just had a look at my folder options and I have "show hidden files and folders" selected- no problem.

What is your operating system?

Show hidden files and folders does not work for you, have you had any viruses or malware lately? All scans okay? Any other problems?

P.S Welcome to the forum :)

Hi, thanks for the welcome and suggestions.

Ive tried both the fixes and reg edits etc and no luck there.

Ive not had any virus or mal ware problems, scans are fine...

I can now see the extentions for my file types, after I applied it a few times it started saving that setting again, but I'm having no luck with the view hidden files and folders I cant even get it to turn on for one session, if I apply it, or ok, or apply to all folders, nothing happens and I go back to the settings and again both are highlighted.

Strange, never come across this before.

Thanks again.

yeah I have full rights I just went into safe mode as admin and there was only one button highlighted "Do Not Show.." .. but when u click over to the other "Show all" it again highlights both choices and doesnt show hidden files or folders.

I run avg 7.5 and just had it do a full system scan and it didnt come up with anything.. I'll have a look around and see if someone has had the problem and found a cure... must have just been coincedental that I updated CCleaner at the same time.

hmmmm.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with your user profile registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER which was something that baffled me for over full year when I was having a problem getting the Status Bar to stay enabled after installing WinXP SP2 broke it. Good luck figuring it out as it typically means you have to trouble shoot.

One tip I learned from my experience was to create a new user profile with Admin rights and then to use Total Uninstall 2.35 (Last Freeware Version) to track changes in that new user profile when I was dabbling with the setting that wouldn't stay enabled. That way I was able find out where that registry key was and to export the working registry data from the new Admin account into a .reg file, and then load my main user profile that was bugged up and import that .reg file to fix the issue I was having.

A Bizzare end to this story...

I run AVG Free as my anti virus prog and today I downloaded something which flashed up as a trojan horse so I clicked and moved it to the virus vault... As soon as I had done that windows now shows all hidden files and folders again.. I removed it from the virus vault (deleted it), and now windows is back to normal.

So strangley enough I didnt have a virus before... but getting sent one fixed this problem.

Not that I'd suggest people do it on purpuse if they come across this problem, but thats def what fixed it for me.

In conclusion I would say that it was nothing to do with CCleaner but perhaps the new AVG 7.5 dealt with a virus alert badly which started the problem... and now having dealt witha virus properly its fixed whatever the issue was.

Other than that I live by NORTON GHOST so I was never too worried as I have a nice clean back up of my system anyway, but I try an avoid putting a fresh ghost on if its something simple.

Thanks for your help.. a strange resolve but a resolve none the less.

(Note: I did try uninstalling AVG and a few other things and reinstalling while I was trying to fix the prob, but that didnt help).
