Does CCleaner dlete necessary files

Just downloaded CCleaner and it found a crapload of things to delete..will this program delete files necessary to the systems performance. Please reply. Thank you

It shouldn't delete any necessary stuff but there can be problems if your system is already messed up, or you are running betas, e.g., IE7, or you have data or application files in the wrong places, e.g., temp folders.

 

I recommend you create a System Restore point or (better) a backup image of your drive before you first CCleaner.

When you click "Analyze" you can see a list and inspect which files to be deleted before you confirm and go ahead with the deletion of those files.

I disagree with this statement. I am not dumb nor an idiot. I was careful to check and recheck everything before I ran ccleaner and fixed issues, now I have two computers that can't run MSN Messenger. My third one I did not install ccleaner on and it is working fine. Now I am trying to undo everything that ccleaner did with no success. I am going to have to try another restore point at a time before I heard of ccleaner and see if that fixes the issues that seem insurmountable...I have little hope that it will.

Can you explain abit more about why you cannot run MSN Messenger on the two machines, what does it now do when you attempt to start it ?

 

I must admit I do not use any registry cleaning tools on myown system as I know mistakes can be very difficult to recover from, Ccleaner does offer a backup option before removing reg entries which should be used as it then creates a Reg file that can simply be merged back into the registry if any problems occur.

 

Im not saying there is any problems with the issues cleaning and Im sure the Author is very careful about what is added but I have never used that option on myown machines or any other Registry cleaning tools as I am aware there is a fine line between obsolete and needed keys and there is many area's of the registry that can reference a file so I see it as if it aint broke dont fix it

 

Please let us know what the issue is with MSN Messenger and let us know if you have tried to re-install the messenger programs on the machines with a problem.

Have you just tried uninstalling then reinstalling MSN Messenger by any chance? If so, what happened? I have MSN Messenger on all of my machines and CCleaner on all of my machines. I run CCleaner about 3 times a day and I have never had the same problem. Many people here would be more than happy to help you fix your problem.

Sorry for reply in an old topic but ive just had this problem.

Installed CCleaner, ran the analysis, found lots of files - mostly in temp folders and too many to go through manually in a single sitting, i hit run cleaner and it did its job.

 

Now certain installers file wont run (strangely, some still do), saying they cant find a dll file that should be in a temp folder, MS office is asking to be reinstalled and... i cant actually remember what the 3rd program was but it was throwing up an error about not being able to find a dll library

 

<edited> the exact error from the install file was "Runtime error (at -1:0): Cannot Import dll: C:\....\Temp\is-VOQJJ.tmp\gtapi.dll [the ... standing in the rest of the path]

 

Is there any way to recover these files, replace them or get around the problem by any other means? Any help at all will be appreciated

 

I am now kicking myself for not making a backup but y'know, i assumed that a) the programmers knew what they were doing and b ) there was nothing important in temp folders (im certain i never chose to put them there)

 

unless these dlls were in the minority group of non-temp folders...

Depending upon your MS Office version you could actually copy the setup disc to your hard drive to a location such as "C:\Drivers\Office" and when Office wants a file or whatever just point it to that location. This equals no more trying to find the Office CD!

 

I know for a fact that some cleaners (not CCleaner) will mess with an Office 2003 .bak file and it will start complaining about it missing. If you do copy the office setup disc to your hard drive make sure you enable the view of Hidden files because MS hides the .cab files on some versions such as Office 2003.

 

I'm not sure about "...\Temp\is-VOQJJ.tmp\gtapi.dll" it doesn't make too much sense that a program installation would require a file from a temp setup folder when it should have copied that .dll into either it's program folder or the Windows "%windir%\system32" folder.

It was an install file that i hadnt actually used yet - i was going to install it later

 

I thought the dll might have been put in a temp when i downloaded the install file, waiting to be used then deleted as part of the install or something but it still didnt work after downloading it again

 

something went quite severely wrong just recently (ive made other changes recently so probably not ccleaner) and after bootup my computer went unresponsive so i used system restore to go back a few days, this has fixed the MS office problem but not the gtapi.dll thing

 

ive just looked up gtapi.dll on google and it turned up a page saying its a component of flashget, a spyware application

 

since the installer was for spyware doctor im not sure what to say...

 

<edit> found a place to download the dll that was missing (then found out it was being quarantined by antispyware software) the install worked fine until late on when it needed to find some other file for registration, but that could be skipped over

 

so i think my problem was unrelated to ccleaner

 

I have since also uninstalled spyware doctor, turned out that their free trial will take you as far as "Spyware doctor has found lots of un-named nasty stuff" but wouldnt do anything about it until you entered the code for the full payed version
