After helping some 40 million users discover billions of pages with interesting stuff from across the web over since the early noughties, StumbleUpon is shuttering its content curation and discovery platform today.

Sorry to see it go. It was one of my earliest sources of discovery for new web sites. Google is fine; you can find just about anything through Google. But doing a search assumes you have a rough idea what you are looking for in the first place. And you might need a lot of patience to scroll through pages of results in the order that Google thinks is important. StumbleUpon was nice in the sense that you often found websites that were not in the top five pages of search results. Some were real gems. Every now and then I would discover some excellent sites, with good information on them, that were virtually unknown by the search engines. Their curators may not have done any SEO work, but they still knew how to supply quality info.

Haven't decided at this time if I will move over to Mix.

I'm not sure that I will join mix, (something else that wants to 'learn' about me) but a quick look at the website just cost me a couple of hours interesting reading of the featured webpages.

Having a sleep disability myself (idiopathic hypersomnia, a form of narcolepsy, prevents me from holding down a job if your interested) of course I just had to read the article about 'Why do we need sleep'.
Which then got me looking for some of the things refered to in it.

Mix is definitely one to be bookmarked.

PS. It's amazing how much is now online about Idiopathic Hypersomnia, when I was diagnosed about ten years ago you were lucky if you could find one or two very technical medical articles about it, now there are 19 pages on google.
