Updating CCleaner.

I hope I have the correct sub forum!

Despite having an extremely limited grasp of computers I have had few problems updating CCcleaner altho' recently I have found the process, of updating, a touch confusing.

Yesterday I failed, for the first time, to update.

However I did manage, maybe due to carelessness, to download Avast anti-virus. I did have Avast before and had no complaints, but, at that time, I took an active decision to download.

On this computer I have Windows 10 with Windows Defender built-in and so decided to stick to that system.

Am I right in assuming since both Avast and Windows Defender are on my PC  this, inevitably, causes some kind of conflict.?

In  fact, are they both working, in the background, and causing problems?

I tried to uninstall Avast, in the usual way, but this did not work.

What is my best course of action?

When/if you install a third party anti-virus Windows Defender turns itself off.

If you remove the other AV then Defender will turn itself back on again.

(An exception to this is Malwarebytes antimalware which is designed to run happily alongside Defender to give extra protection, Defender 'knows' this and stays running as well).

If Avast has actually installed then there is an uninstallation utility to remove it: https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article/Uninstall-Antivirus-Utility

Be aware though that there are reports that it still leaves a few things behind.

As a relative novice I am wary of using the Avast uninstallation facility, but I notice Windows Defender can still, at present, run both scans and give information about any viruses.

I went on to the page Viruses and Threat Protection Settings.

Here Real Time Protection is turned off but Cloud - Delivered Protection and Automatic Sample Submission are still on. Is this important?

I have also read Real Time Protection, for Windows Defender, can only be turned off temporarily, but I assume this is different after Avast has been downloaded.

I have not, so far, opened Avast.

Is this of any importance?

Yes, that's fine.

Apologies that I wasn't clearer. Defender turns off real time protection and lets the other AV handle that if one is present, but Defender will still run scheduled scans about once a week as a double check that the other AV hasn't missed something.

The cloud thing is a definition update so it's scanning for the latest nasties, and if it finds anything it will report it to MS with a sample of what it found during the scan.

It's up to you whether you stick with Avast or uninstall using the utility.

If you do uninstall it then Defender will turn on again and take over the real time protection.

A further point. I am still having problems downloading the newest version of CCleaner.

At a certain stage of the process I am told to watch a brief video but this does not appear.

After this I am told "Thanks for the download" but on the same page there is a box suggesting I should check drivers. I am not given a choice here and I cannot seem to move on.

I notice the last few times I have updated CCleaner I need to attempt the process half a dozen times before I am successful.

I live in a fairly remote rural area and broadband speed is very slow.

Could this be a cause of the failed updates?

Make sure you take care when installing to untick the offers (Avast or Chrome) if you don't want them

That sound like the Filehippo site, which is the 'official' distribution site for CCleaner.
It does have a 'watch this video' while you're waiting page.

If you have an adblocker or similar then the video could be blocked and not show.
(Or it might be to do with what browser you are using, or just your slow broadband).

Just ignore the driver updater and anything else that Filehippo offers you, close the tab and look in your 'downloads' folder for the CCleaner installer.

I've just had a look at Filehippo and the download did not complete for me the first time, I had to try again before I got a pop-up asking if I wanted to save the file.

TBH. I, and other regulars here, always download updates from the official Piriform Builds page rather than Filehippo.
Even when prompted from within CC I say 'no' and then go get it myself from builds.

Again, thanks for the information.

I decided to stay with the familiar Filehippo site, and managed to update after around 10 attempts.

Now I notice there is another update so I may attempt to download using the alternative path mentioned by both hazelnut and nukecad.
