SimonW
I have today got a warning from Malwarebytes telling me that PUP.Optional.CCCleaner is a potentially unwanted program. Is this a bug in CCleaner? An error in Malwarebytes? A malicious program using the CCleaner name? Or is CCleaner not to be trusted? /SW
Moderators mta Posted March 8, 2018 Moderators Share Posted March 8, 2018 g'day simon and welcome. you got that message when, installing or updating CC or doing a MBAM scan? where did you get CC from? CC can be trusted, but it has some free offerings when installing, Avast (and Chrome I think still) that can give false positives. Backup now & backup often. It's your digital life - protect it with a backup.Three things are certain; Birth, Death and loss of data. You control the last. SimonW
I am a paid-up user of CCleaner - Professional version 5.40.6411 (64 bit). I am also a paid-up user of Malwarebytes - Premium 3.3.1 updates current. I always uncheck the offer of free offerings when installing. I bought the professional version of CCleaner some time ago, so haven't slipped into the mistake of installing free programs. I believe updates for CCleaner are now done automatically. /SW
SimonW
I attach a clip of the Malwarebytes warning. What I need to know now is whether to put this file into quarantine or will doing that affect the workings of CCleaner? /SW
Moderators Nergal Posted March 8, 2018 Moderators Share Posted March 8, 2018 I notice in your image it is blocking it as cccleaner (three cees) ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T. SimonW
Hereby sort of answers the question in my first post 'A malicious program using the CCleaner name?' Is that the answer? yea or nay? /SW
SimonW
I did actually note that it was three cs and not two. After quickly checking on this forum I have decided to block it. I don't think it is a true CCleaner file. /SW
Moderators nukecad Posted March 9, 2018 Moderators Share Posted March 9, 2018 It's a known PUP "CC Cleaner", it's nothing to do with Piriform. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-cc-cleaner *** Out of Beer Error ->->-> Recovering Memory *** Worried about 'Tracking Files'?
