WinME

I just upgraded my Windows 98 to Windows ME recently. I also run Norton Utilities 2002 on my computer. I was having problems with using this software, especially the Optimatization Wizard. It would crash my computer everytime. I'd have to "roll it back" about every 3 days to a known good point of operation.

I was looking for some software that would be a little more helpful. I found CCleaner! Since that time, I haven't had a crash yet! I just wanted other people to know this here and if they are having problems with their WinME, that this helped me dramatically.

I also use Avast antivirus and Zone Alarm. So far, so Good.

You are welcome to discuss any other issues you wish here, but I just wanted other people to know of my luck with using this with this operation system upgrade!

I'm not trying to be a drag, but if there is still time...uninstall WinME, and exchange it for XP. You only need the upgrade version if you have a 98 installation CD.

There are many, many problems with ME. If you decide to keep it then you will find out what I'm referring to soon enough. Keep in mind that along with the problems you will experience that you are also stuck with the FAT32 file system.

If you can/do exchange for an upgrade version of XP. Be sure to get instructions on how to convert to the NTFS file system.

Good Luck!

Hi and welcome

Congratulations for upgrading to ME from 98, but I really gotta ask why you didn't just make the final leap up to Win2K or even XP? <_<

They are both very stable, I've had friend who ran ME and it caused more problems than solved, but if it's working for you, got for it!

The reason I'm not running Win2K or XP is because of the size of the program, my laptop speed and the harddrive size. I'm slow about using this newer stuff. One because of affordability. Have to be able to afford to buy that.

Your computer would be better off without Norton Utilities or any other Norton product for that matter.

I don't know whether you know this or not, but Peter Norton was the one that designed "defrag" for Microsoft. in the early years. Norton has been used by me for a long time without any hitches for me, until WinME came along. I just wished the CCleaner had an ability to help to redo the software for faster running, myself. That'd be a big PLUS for WinME users!

the reason Eldmannen says that you'd be better off with no Norton products is because Peter Norton's stuff was bought by Symantec and you may or may not know this, but when Symantec buys a program, the ussually make it worse. i've tried Norton AV 2004 and it worked but it sucked. after i uninstalled it, my computer ran much much faster with AVG Free Edition. so in other words, dont get anything from Symantec.

I can get where your coming from with price, that's fine. However as from speed and size, I run both W2K pro and XP Pro (Not at the sametime) on an old 488 and 8gig hard drive, I'm sure your laptop can't be as bad as that. As I say it's horses for courses, the world would be a pretty boring place if we were all the same. :D

Don't get me started! Anyone who used Win9x will know how bad the defrag util was in Win9x, basically it sucked and even the copyright info stated it was © Symantec. It would take ages to defrag, would constantly restart, and one of the stupidest things ever re-arranging program files so that they could run milliseconds faster. I don't know how many times I've had to disable parts of the defrag engines conjoined .exe files so that it would just defrag files which only takes it 10-30 minutes versus re-arranging them which would take hours on most systems.
