bawldiggle
I have just downloaded v4.14.4707 installer Should the old existing installation be uninstalled or will the new EXE file overwrite the older version Thank you
Moderators mta Posted June 4, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 4, 2014 the new will overwrite the old, but, occasionally, there is an issue. 99% of the time you simply download and install, but sometimes you have to uninstall, reboot, download, install. Backup now & backup often. It's your digital life - protect it with a backup.Three things are certain; Birth, Death and loss of data. You control the last. bawldiggle
Thanks mta, Probably a good practice to uninstall-old, reboot, install-new ... my mantra from here on.
Moderators mta Posted June 5, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 5, 2014 I know I've had it happen to me, way back. And I've definitely seen it needed on a few other PC's. Now I have no doubt if I dug further and looked harder there would have been a valid reason but when the simply solution was to throw in an uninstall and reboot, I didn't give a rats.... Also, FYI, if you use the portable build, you definitely do not need to do anything first, as nothing was there in the first place (so to speak). Moderators Andavari Posted June 5, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 5, 2014 Probably a good practice to uninstall-old, reboot, install-new ... my mantra from here on. Problem is you will lose all of your previous settings, and if you created or changed anything Options->Cookies, Options->Include, or Options->Exclude that would be time consuming to redo every month I'd think. bawldiggle
I am more inclined to use portables (on a USB stick between PCs) Pros: - portable, portable and portable - no stuf in Registry (I hope) Cons: - settings, white list are different on each PC -------- ... but as the devils advocate ... Installer: Pros: - dedicated to the PC Cons: - ?? In ... Options > Advanced ... [x] Save all settings to INI file - and backup the INI file before uninstalling/installing - reinstate the INI file in new version -OR- use the old INI as a reference Torture

Plus you can manually edit ccleaner.ini with the settings if you wish.
bawldiggle
I am not that experienced with CCleaner, to know what the keys and key-values represent. It is only in the last few days that I realised cleaning up after a program uninstall CCleaner filters have to be carefully considered ... And I NEVER assume to a blanket clean all. One program uninstall cleanup yesterday took me over an hour to check EVERY result item, files registry ... etc. With an INI file, I will use the UI Options and watch the changes in the INI file -- to learn. If I opt to use INI file for settings is anything still written to registry ?
Moderators Nergal Posted June 6, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 6, 2014 If I opt to use INI file for settings is anything still written to registry ? Nothing by CCleaner but there will be a few windows based ones that may mention ccleaner ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.
