Animated GIFs won't animate

I've noticed for some time now that when I'm surfing the web, animated gifs that I view won't play. Both Firefox 1.5 and IE show only the first frame of any animated gif, so it looks just like a regular still picture.

At first I figured it was my firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.737), so I shut it off and viewed some animated gifs, and they continued to not be animated; therefore, my firewall is most likely not at fault here. The Windows Security Center service is turned off, including Windows Firewall. I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all current updates.

As far as cleaners and registry editors go, I currently only consistently use CCleaner, which obviously isn't the problem here. Otherwise, I really don't edit my registry much since I reinstalled Windows a few months ago, so I'm fairly certain it isn't a registry error that I have caused. Also something to note, animated gifs on my hard drive play just fine; it is only gifs on web pages that don't play through.

If anyone else has encountered this same problem, and knows how to correct it, please lend me some of your brilliance.

In Control Panel there is a setting in Internet Options that could cause this. After opening Internet Options click on tne Advanced Tab and there will be a checklist. There is a checkbox for 'play animations in Web pages' in the Multimedia checklist about halfway down.

Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Well, I exited out of FF, and found the box, but it was already checked. I tried unchecking it, applying the change, and then checking it and applying it again, but Englishmen's flag is still not waving. :(

Thanks for the suggestion though, I really thought that would work!

Was reading a post recently on a forum about a very similar problem to yours. He also tried disabling ZA with no result. Then he went to the privacy tab in ZA/ad blocking/custom and unticked the ad blocking. Apparently, in his case, the ad block also blocked the animations.

Yes! Problem solved! I brought up ZA and turned Ad Blocking off, and Englishmen's flag waves again!

Have you tried downloading your avatar again to get the animated version?

No I haven't, come to think of it. Gimme a sec.

EDIT:

There, how does that look? Sort of like electroshock therapy.

LOL! Thanks, I needed that...

Yeah, thanks for reminding me. Adds a little spice to it. I mean, what can be more exciting than a freaked out guy with a fro? A freaked out guy with a fro that has 120V DC running through him, that's what. :D

EDIT: The laugh, not electroshock therapy.

EDIT2: OK, Both.

I think it must be 120V AC since he is vibrating. If it was DC he would be glowing. My electroshock therapist proved it to me, unfortunately.
