Zoo122
Hello! I'm new to this forum, and was wondering If I could get some experienced opinions about which programs are worth keeping up space on my computer, and which to uninstall with CCleaner, and why. I'm going through this process for both a laptop and desktop. I won't repeat programs for the second list. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Talldog9
I notice you've got Office Enterprise and OneNote and Visio installed. Kind of redundant but it probably doesn't take up more space than just Enterprise alone. Unless you use the HP stuff you could uninstall them (except drivers you actually need). OEM software FTL. pwillener
... which programs are worth keeping up space on my computer, and which to uninstall with CCleaner, and why. The simple answer is: keep the program that you use, and uninstall those you don't. Ask about those you don't know what they are, but Google may find you the answer quite easily. Of those programs you keep, make sure that you update them regularly - I noticed a few on your list that are quite outdated, e.g. Java 6 Update 15; the latest version is j6u21. Moderators Andavari Posted August 17, 2010 Moderators Share Posted August 17, 2010 The simple answer is: keep the program that you use, and uninstall those you don't. That's the best answer by far, because how are we to know what's worth uninstalling. That list of installed programs has some things necessary for Windows, and Internet usage. Aethec
Here: Laptop: Adobe AIR Uninstall, unless you use a program which requires it. Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Unless you read complicated PDFs (e.g. with forms to fill, Javascript, et al.), uninstall and use a lighter reader such as Foxit Reader, PDF X-Change Viewer or the very small SumatraPDF. (google them) If you need it, update it. Latest is 9.3.something. Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5 Uninstall, unless you use a web app which requires it (very uncommon). Google Desktop Keep it if you use it often ; else, uninstall. Japanese Fonts Support For Adobe Reader 8 If you don't read Japanese, uninstall. Java™ 6 Update 15 Uninstall unless you use a program which requires it. If you need it, update it. Latest is version 6 update 21. Move Media Player Google results say it is bloatware. If you don't need it, uninstall it. (you already have WMP and iTunes anyway) Mozilla Firefox (3.5.8) Update it, latest is 3.6.8 (or was that a typo?) Norton Security Scan (I'm assuming use something else instead) You already have a McAfee product, and they can (and will) conflict if they're both real-time protection. The latest (>2008) versions of Norton are actually quite good, but if it's an old one, uninstall it and replace it with a freebie such as avast or AntiVir. Pando Media Booster If you don't use it, uninstall. Picasa 2 If you don't use it, uninstall. If you use it, update it. Latest is 3.8. http://www.filehippo...ownload_picasa/ RealPlayer Uninstall it...used to be good, became bloatware. Safari Apple Inc. (I'm assuming I can just get rid of this) Yes. Get rid of it. Safari for Windows is complete rubbish. Desktop: AOL Explorer Uninstall. Cox Dashboard If you don't use it, uninstall. Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer Uninstall. Toolbars are evil, particularly Google's. (it used to collect information about your browsing habits even if it was disabled...now it's only if it's enabled) J2SE Runtime Environment Uninstall, unless you use a program which requires it. Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 5 Jasc Paint Shop Pro Studio If you use those two, keep them. Else, uninstall. Macromedia Flash Player Macromedia, Inc. Update it. Latest is 10.1. For IE: http://www.filehippo...flashplayer_ie/ For others: http://www.filehippo...player_firefox/ Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Uninstall, unless you use very old apps which require it. MyWay Search Assistant Uninstall. Shockwave Uninstall, unless you use a web app that requires it. SmartMusic 10 Unless you use it, uninstall. Windows Internet Explorer 7 Update it, latest is version 8. http://www.filehippo...ernet_explorer/ Yahoo! Anti-Spy Yahoo! Install Manager Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer Uninstall those three. ...I assume you own an iPod ? If you do...you're screwed and will have top keep all the Apple stuff (except Safari). Else, uninstall everything with Apple in its name (as well as Bonjour if it is on your computer). Piriform French translator
