Eldmannen
Google released Google Talk, and Instant Messenging service featuring chat and voice. Google Talk I guess it is in beta now. It uses Jabber technology. I think that in future there will be Linux and Mac OS X client and encryption and links to the other non-Google Jabber servers. Sounds promising. It recently got released, I wonder if this will be the next big IM. You can either connect to it by using Google Talk client, or you can use any Jabber-compatible client such as Miranda IM, GAIM, Kopete, Adium, Trillian, etc.
Guest Mangix
it might be but for right now, it is only a jabber IM service. nothing more

mfenech
I use it often to voice between friends. Best sound quality of all of messaging programs, as far I know (and I've tried all the biggies). Sweet little program.

Eldmannen
This is an old topic, heh. Google Talk is great, it is bridged with the Jabber network. So you can use Google Talk, Miranda IM, Gaim, Kopete, Adium X, etc to chat with other people. The protocol is XMPP (Jabber protocol), which is an open protocol based upon XML. There exists libraries and stuff for it, so its easy to code clients, bots, etc for Jabber. It also bridges with AOL, so you can chat with all people that use AOL Instant Messenger.
