Whether you know it or not your computer is always at risk of becoming infected with viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and malware that are constantly evolving and becoming harder to detect and remove. Only the most sophisticated anti-malware techniques can detect and remove these malicious programs from your computer.

IMHO, Adaware and Spybot were ok a while back but with the new variants of smitfrauds and vundo variants Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

and SuperAntispyware would be the best going on their of detection/deletion capabilities.

As for AVG I think it's integrated into the virus engine as of a while ago.

correct, i'd agree with Humpty. AVG recently released AVG 8.0 which now they have integrated AVG Anti-Spyware with their anti-Virus Program. the good news about this is that it is FREE. for more advanced options and such you can pay $30 (i think) and have that but Basic Edition is A OK in my book. also, Spybot and Adaware have had there chance in success for the years that us users had our ways with. but now in this year and last with all the new releases they have changed and gone to crap. SUPERAnti-Spyware i ahve used for more over a year and like it so far.

any idea as to the exact use of RegASsasin by malwarebytes.org? is it fully automated to detect malware registry entries and delete them or does that require to be done manually?

Its best to ask the MBAM developers over at their forum:

Spybot and Adaware have had there chance in success for the years that us users had our ways with. but now in this year and last with all the new releases they have changed and gone to crap.

Way back in 2000 my laptop system was infected with all kinds of pop ups, pop downs and things that would just appear even before I connected to the Internet with my 33.6kbs dial-up modem.

During reading of Steve Gibson's newsgroup I learned about Ad-Aware which I promptly downloaded and ran and was amazed to find that it removed all kinds of stuff namely Gain adware. The pop ups stopped B)

Now in 2008 there is so much malware on the Internet that it resembles a minefield full of nasties that are designed to infect systems with all kinds of stuff from phishing sites to pay_per_click advertising campaigns.

Unfortunatly Ad-Aware ( Lavasoft ) sat back on their laurels not keeping up with the rampant proliferation of malware so new tools became available like SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender and WinPatrol and now MBAM.

I have un-installed Ad-Aware but I have kept Spybot S&D but only run it when new definition files become available and it only finds some cookies and MRU items that I let it delete.

And what makes this different from ad-aware 2008, spybot or AVG anti-spyware?

Malwarebytes actually works.

None of the above will deal with delights such as ie-av and the many, many variants on the same...

ditto, in most circumstances, for ESET nod32 and/or Avast Pro or ZoneAlarm.

Partial or full detection isn't the same as one-shot-removal...

Malwarebytes, proprerly updated, will save one's ass everytime !

Nice.

Now, back to trying to understand why Recuva doesn't do secure delete !

btw - Anyone who wishes to test these various apps in a REAL WORLD environment, rather than believing magazine and site review 'tests', need go no further than downloading and opening just about any known anti-spyware app that also supposedly comes with a crack or keygen - love the irony there !

pssst... the Spysweeper versions on offer are excellent for testing !!!

I just went to the Malwarebytes site to see if this was payware, shareware or freeware. I had to go to Majorgeeks.com to find out it was shareware because other than the purchase icon, I couldn't find much about the program. Does a download allow you to use it for 30 days as a realtime scanner or can you always use it as an on-demand scanner and cleaner as if it were freeware?

Some info on the paid/free version from over at Wilders Post No 16

nosirrah - one of the developers:

MBAM free and pro are the same application . Once you pay the protection is able to be turned on . The free version will scan and remove as well as get app and def updates for free forever .

The free version has a protection check to see if it can be enabled (to detect conflitcs) but we have not had any reports of major conflicts other than AVG calling MBAM an AV .

MBAM is designed to be light and do just enough to get the job done .

MBAM uses great defs combined with creative detection to avoid the bloat and 50 million moving parts that some other applications have and as a result cause conflicts .

MBAM free does not conflict with any software as it is on demand , you can stack up as much on demand security software as you wish .
