  1. Your welcome, glad to be of service...
  2. Sounds to me someone has personalized menus on. You should see the double arrow at the bottom of the menu double click it and the entire menu with all of the options should appear. Another thing is the menus and toolbars have been customized. If that is the case you'll have to right click on a toolbar and select customize.
  3. I put the mp3 file thru a spectrum analyzer and looped it a few hundred times. That is not your PSU fan, less yours has two of them. The fan sounds like a variable speed. To me it sounds like it's spinning on to some cables. Also noticed a hum. That's an indication that either something is not grounded properly or components aren't shield correctly.

That's exactly right, they can't be the same. You can't have 2 of the same ip addresses in your network. Also, a private address you can't reach via the internet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_ip_address The modem that is connected to your wan port on your router needs to get a public ip address which you get from your provider. That's why you want to see that to "obtain ip address automatically"

As long as you have dhcp turned off you're fine. Make sure you set your pc to static ip. The default is your pc is to use dhcp. The default Linksys spits out is 192.168.1.100. Just sent your machine to this. ip: 192.168.1.100 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 192.168.1.1 If you decide to attach another machine to the network just put it at 192.168.1.101. Once you do this test your connectivity. Run the following commands: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping ping 192.168.1.100 if the above works go to the next one, this is ping yourself. ping 192.168.1.1 If the above works go to the next one, this is pinging the linksys router Your gateway. ping 207.69.188.185 this is a dns server and confirms that you have internet. As for DNS, that comes with your provider. If you are running cable leave obtain ip automatically for you modem(wan link on the router) You are only turning off DHCP for your (LAN) Or you can use OPEN DNS: Here are their IPS, Primary 208.67.222.222, Secondary 208.67.220.220 For your local LAN use 192.168.1.1 for your Primary DNS, you don't need a Secondary Additional Reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnet_mask http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dns http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_dns http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_area_network http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_area_network http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrt54g http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhcp I hope I didn't kill you with all of this info. I don't want you to think that I think you're stupid or something. Just want to make sure I cover all of the bases in one post. Anything else just ask.
  6. It's a good idea. However, CCleaner is built on cleaning your system. Removing junk that doesn't belong there or is left behind. There are many great defraging programs out there that do a wonderful job. If you start to add too many features and options to a program it changes it's dynamics and it's not the same old program anymore. It looses it's ZEST. Here is an example. Years ago ICQ used to be a great chat program. It was small and fast and only did chat. Today, it's nothing but BLOATWARE! Too many features and options, now it's meaningless. Hardly anyone uses it anymore. It would be a shame to see CCleaner go to the way of BLOATWARE!
  7. That function is there for you to remove programs as well. There are several options. There is an option to call up the programs "uninstaller" to remove the program and the other is to delete the program from the list of installed program (Program is not deleted, only it's listing). In deleting the program from the list. You CAN'T use the add/remove programs to eliminated it from you system in the future if you need too. But, you can go to the programs directory and find the uninstaller there. In a sense you are manually uninstalling. I hope this makes sense to you. If not we can clarify it further.

Your Welcome! That's what I'm here for... All Linksys routers respond to 192.168.1.1 as the default router ip. However, you can change that to something else if you wish.

Don't forget to change the default SSID if you already haven't done so. Use wpa2 if you can. Here is a website that will generate the key for you. http://www.yellowpipe.com/yis/tools/WPA_key/
  11. CCleaner & SuperAntispyware are one of first apps I put on a prestine desktop. All my clients get it, and I show them how to use it.
  12. That's what a lot of us are doing, including me...
  13. Hey man what is the link to the new forums, I'd like to take a look...
  14. The job today blew up. After 3 hours of troubleshooting to find out that their network is highly unstable. The only solution is to replace their wireless network to a wired one. Kim won't like that and won't understand why. Only other thing is to replace their Netopia with another kind of router. Those are the only options I can think of. Here is a break down of events: Kims Machine First their printer: hp laserject 1320 pcl 6 died. Kim went out and purchased a new one and installed the printer like the first one. The second printer is identical to the first. Since she installed that printer everything stopped working. I was ok, I know why. She broke the share. I went in and installed the printer from scratch and established the share. Then I tested the printer by sending it a test page locally. Secretary Machine Next I went over and deleted the office image writer. It was assuming it was the default printer. afterward, removed the actual image writer from Office 2003 itself. But, for some reason it kept reappearing. Later, I tried to install the printer share that was on Kim's Machine. The machine told me it was could find it or it was a rights issue. I started to troubleshoot the rights issue. Kim's machine was showing up in on the network. So I didn't think it was a communications problem but a rights issue. Kims Machine Opened up gpedit and made sure that the everyone and anonymous groups were enabled for network access. The security tab wasn't present in the folder view so I had to turn off simple sharing. Now, I can use the security tab. I went there and made sure everyone group was in there. *** No one uses passwords to logon to their machines. So, I made a temp admin acct with a password to test it out. Still could access Kims machine. Once I figured out that didn't work I removed the acct. Didn't want to leave open a security hole. *** While all of this was going on I made sure to reboot the machines to rule out anything else like memory corruption. During this time I noticed that the Kim machine would appear and disappear on the network. Right there I knew something was up. I started to ping the machines from each other and saw the problem. Kims Machine could ping the Secretary machine. But, Secretary's machine could see Kims. Thats why the printer share couldn't be added and why image writer was taking over the default. I told Kim I needed another wireless card to check if it was the card. She went home and got hers. It was identical to the one on the machine. I was like YUCK! They were the usb kind. I was thinking something cropped up interfere wise. So when she returned with the other card and I moved it around. It was still behaving in the same way no communications. I started to ping the gateway and a dns server that I know that works. All worked except the printer share. So inclusion what do you suggest? Get new PCI wireless cards that have external antennas. Or do I just wire them up with wired cards. Or do I just remove the router and install a new one? However, everything worked before the printer died. What has changed since then? Did I cover all of the bases, did I forget to do something. It was frustrated to be in a pickle while the client is over your shoulder breathing down your back. I explained to her that I did all that I could do and that we needed to do some further troubleshooting. I also told her that I won't increase my rate cause of the hours spent. She paid for the problem not the time. She said if it take a lot of work to fix the problem, I'll pay you accordingly. Wanted to pass along that I wasn't there to rip her off but more troubleshooting was needed. I tried to explain that to her in a way she would understand. "Oh should I get best buy or the Geek squad" I told her No, they will charge her way too much money and they will make things worse." She will have to pay them upfront. It wouldn't be so easy for her to just "Oh, I'll take $200 off of your rent!"
  15. I hate bloated things But, rebooting was smart.
  16. Does these apps require a reboot? If so forget about it. Only time I reboot if I lock up hard. I wish there was a way to completelly load xp totally to memory. Gigantic 2gb ram drive or something.

    Work!

Well the Manager called me and needs computer work done. My name gets around. Going across the street and setup a shared printer is nothing. Now walking someone through that is another thing and we did that yesterday. However, Office image writer decides to make the job way more complicated. There workgroup is setup weird. So, tomorrow I'll go and rename that freaking workgroup. Delete the office image writer since they don't use it and finally install the hp laserjet 1320 pcl 6., and share it across the network. Then I have to go into there Netopia box and enable port 3389 for remote desktop. Then the other machine I'll have to set it a custom port of 3390 for it's RDP. Once in the Netopia put both of those ports in there so I can hit each machine as well as the Netopia remotely. I really don't wanna have to drive out there again. If I have to it's gonna cost them big time. It's 86.5 miles one way and consume 1.5 hrs of my time, 14.5 gals gas tank @ 1.98c per gallon, 19 City/ 23 Highway, 2.0L v6. Problem: I don't have anyone home to test the remote connection while I'm there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I have to obviously make sure it's setup right the first time and not look like an ass, like the other guy that set up that Netopia box to be begin with. That guy used crazy name for the network and the wireless is using WEP w/ 4 keys. If they ask me to do the network over, I'll do it but it will be a charge of $500 for starters. Why, cause I'll have to do 2 sites. I'm not sure if they have any others and if they do I don't know where are they. Anyone worked with Netopia's before? If so can you give me any heads up on what to look for? I'm gonna download some manuals on it tonight.
  18. Remote Desktop is one of those apps I can't live without. I use it to remotely repair other machines. My Mom/Sisters desktop that is in NYC. Tomorrow, I'm going out onsite to a job that is 1.5 hrs away. So, I'll be setting up remote desktop their so I don't have to go out again. When me and the ex-wife were in talking terms I used to repair 2 desktops over there in Indiana.
  19. Crocodile Hunter, he is awesome, I miss him. I don't hardly watch tv myself. My fiance is the one that watches more then I do. With her TV Tuner card she is hooked. Now if we can only get the gb-pvr to work right... I'd have to agree boring as hell. Sleep is the only thing you can do or try. Either they are taking vitals for blood for the Vampires! 80: Kidney biopsy, I think I was in there for 3 days, but I was a kid then and don't remember too much. 95: They thought I had appendicitis but it was a bad stomach flu. I was in the hospital for 2 days. My gf stayed with me the whole time. She even slept with me in my bed. Never had that happend before. I was the latest gossip on the floor. 03: Galbadder surgery, I was in there for 2 days with that. I just ran up the phone bill then.
  20. Welcome back... No laptop with a wireless connection to play with. I would've died!!!!!!!! I have a phobia of hospitals and clusterphobia. Nope, I'll have to be dying to go into a hospital for extented lenght of time.
  21. As far as I know. You are running the app remotely it should work fine. But if you are running as a thin client you are trying to clean a roaming profile. If I'm not mistaken. It would make sense. It is vital to keep a romaing profile as small as possible. This reduces load times across slow links and corruptions.
  22. Investing in a confetti cut shedder and shed all of your mail and put them in those shinny bags that are tear proof once sealed. Don't give out your SSN or TIN # to anyone. Story: I had a buddy of mine years ago was applying for a phone line in his basement for his dial-up account. They asked him for his SSN #. He refused to give it to them. He told them that's not what the SSN # is for. So he had to pay a $1000 deposit to establish local service. He was being punished because he didn't give out his #. They were mad cause they couldn't run a credit check. They didn't turn on his long distance til a year later. After 2 years later he got his deposit back.
  23. Have to agree this is what I am using now. I just run it from my server to all my machines on my network all at the same time. I use the "-o2 -d 5" it checks the free space and does everything. I'm happy with it. However, I'm always looking for programs and if they do it better then their competitors. That's why I have Virtual PC to beta test everything under the sun when I have the time to do so.
  24. Hello All! Early this morning I upgrade to Giganews Diamond plan. That's 20 concurrent connections plus 256 Bitt SSL encryption! There is a lil bit of overhead but with a 10 mb/s connection you can hardly notice it. Is anyone else using newsgroups and using encryption?
  25. Couldn't have said it any better myself. That's what I was trying to say... Just too damn tired to do anything yesterday.
