  1. Tarun,

My Computer (I know I need a new one but I'm holding back for the next windows release):

    Athlon XP 1800+

    256MB Ram

    NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX440

    512Kbps ADSL Connection

What settings do I use from your website?

Go for the For fast computers and fast connections, optimal settings.

  2. You and Dj know each other from outside the forum then?

I thought you seemed to get on extremely well, and seem to be able to bounce off each other.

I agree with your comment about Dj being the best tech out there, I got that impression soon after I came to this forum, no disrespect to you though, you seem to come a pretty close second to him.

No offense/disrespect taken. Actually that makes me feel pretty good!

I still remember how I met Dj. It was in EUO, through a friend named Michelle. He helped me out with a few weapons and stuff and things went from there. I'm proud to hear that I come a pretty close second to him. :D

It's nice to follow in his footsteps. (Except after he eats bean dip)

  3. Windows Firewall is better than nothing. However; it only blocks SOME outbound items, and I've seen it allow spyware without asking once.

ZoneAlarm Pro is good too, same with the free version. Frankly, if you want a great firewall then I highly recommend Outpost Pro.

  4. Thanks Dj, that was easy,

Now I just have to paste the optimizations in like rridgely said?

I'm guessing I just paste them in the same pane that I dropped the XPI.

Actually, once you restart Firefox go to Tools > Edit User Files > user.js tab.

  5. I had an idea that we could all post the part of the world that we come from here, which would help others know when certain people are likely to be awake to assist with problems or sleeping, (rejuvinating themselves, ready for the next days problems).

I seem to get the impression that a lot of you are from the USA, except Tarun who I think lives on the moon, (not too sure of the time difference up there).

I'll start, I'm from London, UK, (you might have guessed that by now).

I'm actually from Virginia, though I love the moon. But not nearly as much as I love my fianc?e! :D Lunarian is actually a part of a role play character I've developed.

  6. Coming from Dj, that is a huge compliment. Leave it to Dj to boost your morale. He recently did it to me and now I get to brag. Haha. I would swear on the Holy Bible that I feel Dj is the best tech out there. I will also say that I am DAMN proud to be under his guidance and supervision. He even tolerates me, which is cool. He's more than just my teacher, he's one of the very best friends I have.

  7. I personally have never liked using Java based app's because they always seemed rather sluggish, of course that was based upon my usage of them on my Win98 system. I also don't like .NET app's especially after using ATI's display drivers that have the ATI control panel which is .NET based. Since I know how it reacts with my system I now only use the standard Windows GUI styled ATI control panel driver.

The sluggish performance seems as if it'll bring my WinXP Pro system to a halt, even though my system has 1 GB Ram & a 3.2 Ghz P4 w/HT, hence the reason I avoid them.

Same on my 3.4 GHz P4 HT with 2GB RAM. So I just install the drivers that come without that junky Control Center.

  8. Can anyone point me in the right direction to sorting out this error message.

It appears when I open the My Network Places folder.

Clicking Yes or No twice makes the error message box go, but I end up with an empty window.

This is on a computer that is accessing the internet through another computer without any problems, but other than that all communication between computers is non existant.

The computer showing the error message is a Win ME, just in case this helps.

    Thanks in advance.

Looks to me like you're having a problem with a file located in C:\Windows\Web\

It may be offline content or otherwise. It appears to be a java(script) error and isn't much of anything to worry about. I may be able to boot my old ME machine and check for that exact file (unsure when though). :)

  9. Well when i try opening let's say for example yahoo game page and select a web based game i click on the link the page seems to be uploading and then for no apparent reason it crashes and disapears!

I don't get an error message, it just crashes and the web page closes itself.

I`ve also run other spyware and no critical viruses were found...

Are those the only pages that it occurs?

I recommend looking at this site.

  10. I used CCleaner for the first time the other day. I actually read the beginners guide which states in effect that it is suggested to leave everything in the default mode. Well I did that and now I have to reconstruct my Quicken checkbook (yea, yea...I know I should have had a a backup!!) And yes I do know that it was CCleaner as I have not run anything else nor have I downloaded anything else during that time frame. I like the idea of CCleaner but at this point there is no way that I could recommend it to anyone nor will I use it again. I'll just keep cleaning the old fashioned way!

Before you swear it off, have you considered unchecking the Quicken option?

  11. so is it something like a DLL that is currently running?

Dynamically Linked Library - (DLL) - A library which is linked to application programs when they are loaded or run rather than as the final phase of compilation. This means that the same block of library code can be shared between several tasks rather than each task containing copies of the routines it uses. The executable is compiled with a library of "stubs" which allow link errors to be detected at compile-time. Then, at run time, either the system loader or the task's entry code must arrange for library calls to be patched with the addresses of the real shared library routines, possibly via a jump table.

The alternative is to make library calls part of the operating system kernel and enter them via some kind of trap instruction. This is generally less efficient than an ordinary subroutine call.

It is important to ensure that the version of a dynamically linked library is compatible with what the executable expects.

Examples of operating systems using dynamic linking are SunOS (.so - shared object files), Microsoft Windows (.dll) and RISC OS on the Acorn Archimedes (relocatable modules).
