  1. You know, I really don't understand why they don't have this in Opera  I kinda hate the fact that you have to go to Bookmarks to open a page. I want to have a link bar or... something...

There is a personal bar you can add, but you can't reposition the toolbars and I absolutely hate it!

I did put the tabs on the bottom by moving the address bar contents to the main bar. You can also move the bookmarks you can add to your personal bar to the main bar. I can provide a screenshot if need be.

  2. I tried it, but I can't stand not being able to place the toolbars where I want. Seems to have fits with cookies too. IE: not remembering your logins and such. It has several site displays really screwed up too, which is a shame. :\

I definitely miss right clicking on my bookmarks and being able to have them on a special toolbar that is aligned with the menu bar.

  3. No, something about that phrase is tricking it into saving it as Unicode instead of ASCII.

Make two text files, one with the exact phrase, and another with the phrase missing one word... then view both with a hex editor. It's a bug.

Ah, so that's what it was. Though it's not the phrase, it's something about the number of characters input. Cause it works with "Bush hid the facts" too.

  4. I still have WGA installed. Thing is we're talking about two totally different things!

Notice that the original post is about Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications.

Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications notifies you if a copy of Microsoft Windows XP is not genuine. The notification messages only appear on computers that have failed the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process and that are running a copy of Windows XP that is not genuine. If you are running a validated, genuine copy of Windows XP, you will not receive notification messages.

    About WGA

WGA is installed as a BHO in IE (and if you download it for Firefox as a plugin). It then checks with Microsoft when you go to update from their website to see if your Windows is valid.

The WGA Notifications is a downloadable application that will be installed and, since it is a pre-release it is still in testing. What it does is send a few bytes to Microsoft daily to see if your Windows is valid or not. They are currently in the process of recoding it since it is not final to check once every two weeks.

lokoike -> No, it's a High Priority update but it is not required.

    High-priority updates

    Microsoft Windows XP

    Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)

Download size: 935 KB , less than 1 minute

The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.

Was I wrong? Will you still receive Windows Updates even if you don't use this tool to prove to Microsoft that your copy of Windows is genuine?

I hid the update for WGA Notifications way back when I saw it was beta and I am still able to download Windows Updates. After all, you only need WGA, not their WGA Notifications.

Yeah, Tarun. How are you getting your updates? Are you just using a workaround? I had never found it necessary, but now I'm wondering about that. :P

My Windows is genuine and running WGA which is all I need to get updates. No workarounds or anything like that. I'm legit. :P

For those who are wondering, you can read more about Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications. In addition, if you read about WGA Notifications it will tell you how to uninstall/temporarily disable WGA Notifications.

  5. Microsoft Corp.'s program for testing whether a PC is running a genuine copy of Windows, known as Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), has drawn considerable fire from users since it was launched last July. This week, Microsoft gave users another reason to complain when it confirmed that the version of the program being delivered as a "high priority" automatic update for Windows PCs is a test version. Usually, Microsoft distributes test versions of software separately from updates, and users are given the opportunity to sign up for the software before test versions are downloaded.

Microsoft said that users still can opt out of downloading the update, called WGA Notifications, and that its user license makes it clear that it's prerelease software. However, many users don't read an entire license agreement, which can be lengthy, before downloading software to their computers. And some download all Windows updates without looking closely at the fine print.

I never downloaded it, and told my updates to hide it. :P

One thing is for sure. It shows how many people are totally stupid and blindly download these things. It is marked as High-Priority, but you don't have to download it once. It's even a pre-release software.

They're changing the call-home on it though to once every two weeks instead of daily.

But yeah, it is their business if you own and use a pirated version, it's illegal.

  6. Lock, trash, delete and ban.* gg. :P

RonTheCon? Sounds like Con is short for Con-Artist.

Hell, even my forums are welcome to all, but if I catch you on my site posting this garbage and total s**t; you'll be banned in a heartbeat Con.

Nice "work" telling people to basically disable their computers. Too many wannabe techs and you're one of them. Buy some half assed "tweak" program and think you know all about computers. Grow up kid.

*In other words, reported this trash thread till it gets removed.

  7. Haven't we said it enough times already...? Or maybe 'nag' would be a better verb here...

And you continue to troll... ...why?

Users are free to express their opinions and give feedback about the software. It is after all encouraged. Sorry if you cannot handle it or don't like it, but it's something you'll just have to deal with.

  8. The Piriform website says "The best software is free!", free is can be interpreted in many ways, such as in the sense of freedom and in gratis (free of charge). Example;

    * Free as in free beer.

    * Free as in freedom.

Now while the best software may be free of charge, I would also argue that the best software is free of unnescesary bundled junk like toolbars.

And how can it be free, if I cant alter it, cant inspect the source code, etc?

To me, it is free of charge. But it isnt much more free than that in that sense.

    Well said.

  9. Readable translation:

    Hi

My Pent III PC (WinME) stopped functioning and is now on life support .. all indications point to a corrupt Registry .. or, Heavens forfend!, an avian virus .. or 2 ..

.. it won't go into Windows; nor is it able to go online. I am able to boot up only by means of an

    . . . iOmega Zip disc / Norton emergency Boot disc combination . . .

which i prepared in 2001 .. it allows me access to all current files on the computer .. but the SYSTEM i must use is the Windows on the iOmega disc, which is an external machine connected to the PC, and which configures itself on the computer by creating it's own I:\ drive.

. . . Today, through my son's laptop, i Downloaded CCleaner directly into a CD-R/W disc which i then put into my PC and copied into my own current folder in C:\programfiles\ .. it Installed fine.

. . . However .. when i Run Cleaner .. it won't CClean, but rather will only IClean .. that is, it runs the entire program on the recovery material which is on my iOmega disc!!! :o (i did cancel the run when i saw the indication that it was cleaning the "I:" drive).

[ok, if i have done irrepairable damage to the emergency disc, i shall have to determine never again to emerge from this old computer's next catastrophe .. schmidt happens.]

PROBLEM: How can i get CCleaner to C-Clean rather than I-Clean?

    .. so far my ideas/solutions????

    (1) Is there a place in CCleaner where i can assign the drive to work on?

    (2) Could i go into DOS and then Run the Cleaner i have in my C:\programfiles\? or does CC need a Windows environment in order to be able to do its thang?

    (3) I've already backed up the PC onto dozens of little floppies and just purchased a new PC that doesn't have a floppy port .. so if i can CClean this old mare and fix her up just so's she can hobble alongside the new WinXP Media monster .. it's about all one can ask for at my age ..

    thanks

  10. ATI Radeon 9800 128MB (the last ATI junk I'll own because I hate their crappy .NET Catalyst Control Center)

Download the ATI drivers 5.12 with Control Panel, then just download the Dial-up display drivers only. Install over the old graphic drivers and keep the CP.

  11. ASAP does not mean that a user is a certified pc technician. ASAP is an online certification. That truly does not mean much. Reference...

I would put more trust into actual technicians who have their A+ certification.

As far as I know, only DjLizard and myself have this certification.
