Your choice - 'standard' cleaning for Free, or pay for more control of what does or doesn't get cleaned. Generally the users posting  here so far don't have a problem with that.

    Hi nukecad:

On what basis have your drawn that conclusion?  I think it's a bit early to assume that the majority of CCleaner Free users who use Custom Clean will choose one of those two options and stay with CCleaner, no matter what.

I forgot to address this, just know that if you do you will most likely be losing access to the driver and software update checkers as well, in case you use that stuff...

    Hi JamesRM:

That's why I've always deliberately deleted the \x86 and \x64 subfolders - I don't want to use bloat like Health Check, Software Updater and Driver Updater.  About the only features I use in CCleaner Free Portable are Custom Clean, registry cleaner (only if a stray registry entry is causing a problem after a software program is uninstalled ) and system restore (to view the dates my system restore points were created).

For others who aren't familiar with CCleaner Free Portable, here's what I see immediately after I unzip any Portable ccsteup6xx.zip file (i.e., before the new version of CCleaner64.exe is launched for the first time on my 64-bit machine):

NOTE: Keep the \Lang subfolder if you use a non-English edition of CCleaner Free Portable.

I don't think it'd work, after enough time has passed since last check (or time of opening CCleaner in the case you described), CCleaner / CCleaner64 would contact Shepherd to request remote configuration ...

    Hi JamesRM:

Are you referring to the shepherd.ff.avast.com server listed in Sampei Nihira's 05-Jun-2024 post in the Wilders Security Forums topic CCleaner v6

NOTE: I can't guarantee that Sampei's suggested edit to the hosts file (located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc) shown below actually works since they didn't say if they were one of the CCleaner Free v6.24 users who was randomly selected to receive an "experimental" build of v6.24 that prevents Custom Clean from running.

If this is the "Shepherd" you are referring to, what is the name of the executable that connects to shepherd.ff.avast.com? I assume it can't be CCleaner64.exe if you have created inbound and outbound blocks that prevent this executable from making a connection through the firewall.  My image <above> shows that once you delete all the unnecessary .exe and .dll files from CCleaner Free Portable the only executable file you're left with is CCleaner64.exe (unless you have a 32-bit OS and keep the bundled CCleaner.exe instead of the 64-bit CCleaner64.exe).

There is a workaround.  Install 6.24 portable ... Turn internet back on and everything should be fine.

    Hi Anony2000:

Did you unzip and test your CCleaner Free Portable v6.24 (ccsetup64.zip) file to see if the copy you downloaded could run Custom Clean without making the configuration changes you described <above>? AFAIK most, if not all, users who have reported that they are unable to run Custom Clean in CCleaner Free v6.24 use a "regular" version of  CCleaner that was installed on their hard drive with an .exe installer.

Am I correct that you deleted the two subfolders called \Log and \Setup in your CCleaner Portable folder that are created the first time you launch a new version of the CCleaner64.exe? I haven't updated to v6.24 yet but I always configure my CCleaner Free Portable in much the same way that you described, but without the winapp2 file and folder. My Portable build has always created those two subfolders the first time I launch a new version of CCleaner64.exe since the Bug Reporter tool was added to CCleaner v6.04 in Sept 2022.

  5. To @CCleaner Cleaning Team and any Avast / Piriform employees lurking in the shadows:

Perhaps this whole fiasco should be looked on as an opportunity to finally get things right with CCleaner Free Portable.

Your company could do what many customers have been requesting for years and release a slimmed-down build of CCleaner Free Portable that is a true portable app (i.e., no creation of registry entries and all configuration settings stored in the local config.ini file, no tasks created in Windows Task Scheduler, no collection of telemetry data, and preferably without constant nagging to upgrade to an installed build of CCleaner Professional, although I know that last one is big ask 🙂 ).  CCleaner Free Portable could include basic, configurable cleaning features (e.g., Custom Clean, registry cleaner, and the "extra" tools on the Tools panel like System Restore, Drive Wiper, etc.) but it would not have all the other "boutique" features added in recent years like Health Check, Performance Optimizer, Software Updater, etc.

That would give users two options - a basic CCleaner Free Portable with Custom Clean as the main cleaning tool, and the paid CCleaner Professional with all available features, including the "boutique" features for those who prefer automated cleaning and system optimization.

As it stands, if Custom Clean is removed from all CCleaner Free builds I suspect that the majority of users who were already unhappy with many of the changes made to CCleaner Free since Avast acquired Piriform in July 2017 will stop using your product and finally move on to another disk cleaning utility that allows customized cleaning.

need a replacement for CCleaner Free - Cookie Manager  any ideas?

    Hi bjm2:

What is your default browser, and do you have any critical cookies that you need to keep after your browser is closed?

Firefox is my default browser and I use MS Edge on occasion, and I haven't allowed CCleaner to manage my cookie cleaning in either browser since a bug in CCleaner v5.69 wiped the custom settings of NoScript and several other Firefox extensions - see circcc's 01-Jul-2020 Problem with Firefox 79.  User circcc gave Piriform / Avast ample warning that CCleaner's cookie cleaning would damage browser extensions when Firefox v79 was released but their warnings were ignored and Piriform / Avast released CCleaner v5.69 without fixing the problem.  Piriform / Avast does not thoroughly beta-test upcoming releases of CCleaner and I feel it's just a matter of time before a similar bug is introduced in CCleaner's cookie cleaning.

I now use the built-in settings in Firefox and MS Edge to automatically delete my Internet cache and cookies when these browsers are closed (see the Kaspersky blog entry How to clear your cache and cookies in multiple browsers), and most popular browsers also have a setting where you can create an exception (exclusion) to keep critical cookies when your browser clears your cookies.

    Hi Apostolo Arnaldo:

That's good news (I also use Video DownloadHelper in my default Firefox browser), but this suggests you still have a problem with your Chrome browser or Video Downloader PLUS for Chrome extension. I suspect there is a bug in the current Video Downloader PLUS v6.5.0 (I'd still advise you report your video download problem to the developer at contact@fdown.net), but if you start seeing other problems with your Chrome browser be sure to post back.

Hi, it flashes the "cmd" window for a fraction of a second and then its gone...

That is concerning, since this could indicate that you also have issues with your Win 8.1 system files.  Be sure when you enter the command sfc /scannow that you are using an elevated command prompt with Administrator rights - right-click on your Start menu button (or press the Windows key + X) to open the power user task menu and select Command Prompt (Admin) as shown in the first image below.  Also see the Dell support article Open Command Prompt in Windows 8 / 8.1. NOTE: an elevated command prompt will display the word "Administrator" in the title bar as shown in the second image below.

If System File Checker (SFC) still won't run from an elevated command prompt and you notice other problems with your Win 8.1 OS (e.g., BSODs, system freezes, error messages when you launch software) be sure to post back and we'll see if we can help.

i did not know i shouldnt do a registry clean..

Unfortunately, most users don't learn that until AFTER a registry clean as already caused damage.

If someone is using the registry cleaner in CCleaner and clicks the "Review Selected Items" button after the scan is finished, I'd like to see the pop-up message shown below (i.e., asking users if they would like to create a backup of their registry - I always answer "Yes" to that question) include a strongly-worded warning that deleting registry entries can lead to system instability and that users should proceed with caution. Hiding that warning in the Cleaner support article Clean the Windows Registry is not sufficient.

  11. Hi Apostolo Arnaldo:

What were the results of your DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and sfc /scannow scans? For example, did System File Checker (SFC) detect and repair any damaged or missing Windows system files?

If these scans do not find any issues with your Windows 8.1 operating system then you should run a few tests to see if something other than CCleaner is the cause of your video download problems.

It is possible one of your other browser extensions is preventing Video Downloader PLUS from downloading videos. Open your Chrome extensions manager (enter chrome://extensions/ in the address bar) and disable all browser extensions except Video Downloader PLUS v6.5.0.  Then restart Chrome and check if your videos download correctly. I don't have Chrome installed on my Win 10 computer but this is what the extensions manager looks like in my MS Edge (Chromium) browser when all my extensions are enabled:

    MSEdgev125_0_2535_67ExtensionsManager28May2024.png.5e56df06a74d7bd5d014f9ed64acc620.png

If disabling your other browser extensions doesn't help please confirm that the YouTube videos you are trying to download will play correctly in your Chrome browser (according to the Video Downloader PLUS download page <here> this extension can only download videos from YouTube due to Chrome policies).  It would also be helpful if you could provide the URL of one of the videos you cannot download.  Your image suggests one URL is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9976907 but when I try that URL I get the message "This video isn't available anymore".

I would also suggest you contact the Video Downloader PLUS developer at contact@fdown.net and ask if there are any known issues with v6.5.0.  The Video Downloader PLUS download page <here> states the latest v6.5.0 has a new feature called "Safe Browsing" that is supposed to protect users from malicious websites, and this new feature might have a bug that is preventing your downloads.  As nukecad suggested <above>, it might be your Video Downloader PLUS v6.5.0 extension, and not CCleaner, that is the root cause of your issue.

I did just a sweep and looked for registry errors...

    Hi Apostolo Arnaldo:

While you are troubleshooting this problem please avoid using CCleaner v6.24 again unless you are asked to do so.

When you say you did a "sweep" with CCleaner what does this mean? Did you run a manual Custom Clean scan or use some other feature like Health Check, Performance Optimizer, etc.?

I only run the registry cleaner in CCleaner if I uninstall a program and need to remove orphaned remnants left behind in the registry that I know are causing a problem. The CCleaner support article Clean the Windows Registry warns that "It’s always safer to leave an entry than to remove it..."  if you are not certain that removal of a registry entry could damage your registry .  Microsoft also strongly advises against using any registry cleaner in their support article Microsoft Support Policy for the Use of Registry Cleaning Utilities.

The fact that re-installing your Video Downloader PLUS v6.5.0 extension did not fix your problem suggests that CCleaner v6.24 might have damaged your Chrome browser or some Windows API your browser uses to download videos.  As a first troubleshooting step please open an elevated command prompt with Administrator rights, run the following commands, and let us know if either scan finds a problem with your Windows system files.

    • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    • sfc /scannow

More information about these scans can be found in the ghacks.net article Use DISM to Fix Issues SFC Can't .  If these scans do not detect any problems with your system files your results should look like the image below.

What Windows operating system and CCleaner product (full name and version) are you using? Do you recall what CCleaner feature (e.g., Health Check, Performance Optimizer, Custom Clean, registry cleaner, etc.?) you ran before your Chrome extension stopped working correctly?

What is the download page for this extension on the Chrome Web Store?  I searched for "video downloader plus" and got multiple hits (e.g., Video Downloader PLUS v6.5.0, Video Downloader Plus v3.0.1, etc.).

If your problem started after you updated to v6.24.11060 (rel. 23-May-2024) please see my 24-May-2024 post in Jeff M's Not Cleaning Edge and Chrome Cookies about a bug in CCleaner v6.22 (rel. 13-Mar-2024) where CCleaner was trying to clean "extension-related browser cookies" in Chromium browsers.  According to the 18-Apr-2024 post <here> by the @CCleaner Cleaning Team that bug was fixed in CCleaner v6.23 (rel. 17-Apr-2024), but I have concerns that the  latest CCleaner v6.24 will once again try to clean "extension-related browser cookies" that could potentially damage my Chromium browser extensions.   After reading Forum Moderator Nergal's 24-May-2024 post in thany2's The Upselling Mechanism has Stuffed Up the Program about the various bugs in CCleaner v6.24 I have decided to skip the v6.24 update and wait until CCleaner v6.25 is released next month.

The release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history for the latest CCleaner v6.24.11060 (rel. 23-May-2024) state in part that "We've enhanced our cookie cleaning in Chromium browsers for even greater thoroughness."

Does anyone know what this means? If "enhanced" cookie cleaning means that Piriform / Avast is making another attempt to clean data stored in Chromium browser extensions then that's definitely not something I want, and I'm going to have to disable cookie cleaning for MS Edge in my CCleaner v6.24 Custom Clean settings.

I tried portable apps and it's bloatware with all the crap included. How do I disable software updater?...

    Hi Anony2000:

Could you just confirm that you wiped all traces of the "regular" CCleaner off your system (e.g., HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Piriform registry keys plus all Windows Task Scheduler tasks related to CCleaner; also look for any orphaned Piriform / CCleaner folders in C:\Program Files, C:\Program Files (x86) and the hidden C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData if you've ever installed a "regular" version of CCleaner Free or Pro on the hard drive of your computer in the past) before you tested ccPortable?  I doubt that would remove all the unwanted bloat from ccPortable like Software Updater but it would give you a fresh start without any CCleaner registry entries.

Also confirm that you always delete the highlighted files and subfolders shown below immediately after you unzip any ccsetup6xx.zip file (i..e, before CCleaner64.exe is launched), including files like CCleanerBugReport.exe, CCleanerDU.dll, and wa_3rd_party_host_32.exe / wa_3rd_party_host_64.exe (two new executables in the \x86 and \x64 subfolders that were added some time around the release of CCleaner v6.18 in Nov 2023; I believe they are components of the OESIS V4 SDK developed by OPSWAT, Inc. that might be associated with Software Updater - see TheOwner's 23-Nov-2023 topic What is wa_3rd_party_host_64.exe in CCleaner Folder).  Note that you must keep the \Lang subfolder if you use a non-English version of CCleaner.

    CCleanerv6_23ccssetup623_zipAllUnzippedFiles10May2024.png.b2b67a5a2d678525d38f610702bed4f8.png

Could you also explain how you know that it is Software Updater (i.e., the CCleaner feature at Tools | Software Updater that checks for updates for third-party software installed on your system) and not another CCleaner feature like automatic background checks for available CCleaner program updates (or even those annoying system tray pop-up ads nagging me to upgrade to CCleaner Pro that sometimes appear when I launch CCleaner Free Portable) that is making connections through your firewall?  Note that I don't use Winapp2.ini, so that adds a whole extra layer of complexity to your CCleaner configuration.

I'm not a computer hardware expert and I don't normally monitor every attempted connection through my firewall using a utility like TCPView, so if you've deleted files and subfolders shown in the image above then the only CCleaner-related .exe or .ddl file on your system should be CCleaner64.exe.  If you've created firewall rules to block all incoming and outgoing traffic by CCleaner64.exe through your firewall then how do you prove that it is CCleaner that is still making connections to the four IP addresses you listed <above>?

  16. Hi Anony2000:

I am a long-time user of CCleaner Free Portable that I run from a removable USB stick and I have never installed CCleaner on my computer.  See my 21-Jul-2023 post on page 5 of Wisewiz's Welcome Back to CCleaner Professional ???  about the registry entries at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Piriform that CCleaner Free Portable creates on my system.  I sent a support request to Avast / Piriform in July 2023 asking why a portable app would have to create all these registry entries, and if there was any way to prevent their creation in the first place, and never received a response.

That July 2023 topic of Wisewiz's is seven pages long but you might find some useful information in pages 4 to 7.  The OP Wisewiz posted <here> on 18-Oct-2023 that they switched to using a modified version of CCleaner (ccPortable) from PortableApps.com that does not create these registry entries.

I haven't made that switch to ccPortable yet, but I have a 64-bit OS and whenever I update CCleaner Free Portable I unzip the zipped file (e.g., ccsetup6xx.zip) and delete every file except CCleaner64.exe, portable.dat and License.txt - see my 26-Nov-2023 post <here> on page 7 of Wisewiz's topic for further details (NOTE: I also and keep the ccleaner.ini file from the previous that stores my custom configuration settings - the \Log and \Setup folders are created the first time CCleaner64.exe is launched) .  I have no need for the extra bloat that Avast / Piriform has added to CCleaner in recent years (e.g., Health Check, Software Updater, Driver Updater, etc.), and Custom Clean and the registry cleaner (which I rarely us) still work correctly on my system.

    CCleanerv6_23FourEssentialPortableFiles06May2024.png.46f17efeddf549a764cce6542d6145e3.png

I have also disabled automatic updating at Options | Updates | Keep CCleaner Updated Automatically,  deleted the CCleaner Update task from the Windows Task Scheduler (my image below is from Sep 2022 when I was using CCleaner Free Portable v5.89, but I'm guessing newer versions of CCleaner Portable v6.xx still create this  scheduled task in Task Scheduler), and created a firewall rule to block all incoming and outgoing traffic by CCleaner64.exe through my Windows firewall) to eliminate as much unwanted (and completely unnecessary) background activity by CCleaner Free Portable as possible.

Thank you for reporting this! We've resolved this issue in CCleaner 6.23. Here's an update.

    Hi @CCleaner Cleaning Team :

    Thank you for the confirmation.

It would be helpful if that bug fix was documented in the version history at  https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history, as well as the v6.23 release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/release-notes and v6.23 release announcement at https://www.ccleaner.com/knowledge/ccleaner-v6-23-11010?cv=v6-23-11010 .

  18. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback.

Further to my 15-Mar-2024 post <here> about my built-in MS Edge browser extensions, I can confirm that this bug appears to be fixed in CCleaner v6.23.

I use CCleaner Free Portable and ran test Custom Cleans ("Analyze" only, did not click "Run Cleaner" to proceed with the disk clean) with v6.21, v6.22 and v6.23 today.

The buggy v6.22 found 20 MS Edge "cookies" to clean, including 3 extensions with descriptors like  "Cookie: extension://nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaom" ...

    CCleanerv6_22AnalyzeMSEdge20CookiestoClean18Apr2024.thumb.png.1813ca1653081a953ff48f6da718dd6d.png

...while v6.21 and v6.23 both only found 17 "cookies" as expected.  I ran a second scan with v6.23, but this time I clicked "Run Cleaner" to proceed with the disk clean, and all MS Edge cookies were correctly cleaned and no residual cookies were detected on a third scan.

Just wanted to mention that CCleaner v6.23 no longer shows entries for the Edge/Google Chrome cookies before or after running Custom Clean.

40 minutes ago, Jeff M said:

Actually , it does show entries for cookies for Edge and Chrome if there are cookies in there. If all that's in there are the browser extension placeholders , they no longer show.

This needs clarification.  Is anyone who has updated to the latest CCleaner v6.23 (rel. 17-Apr-2023) still seeing "leftovers" like the ones shown in nukecad's 14-Mar-2024 image <here> (e.g., with descriptors like  "Cookie: extension://nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaom") after they use CCleaner v6.23's Custom Clean to clean their Chrome and/or MS Edge browser cookies?  Posting an image of what you observe would be helpful.

Note that I'm still on CCleaner v6.21 and skipped the update to v6.22, in part because of this bug.

Does anyone know if previous CCleaner versions like CCleaner v6.21 actually cleaned browser extensions, or is this something new that's been added to v6.22?

I don't find it odd at all, it's just something new with Chrome/Chromium that you haven't seen before in CCleaner....Browsers these days tend to put cookies in related sections (boxes) rather than just all in one place like they used to be, so many boxes rather than one big box....

    Hi nukecad:

Browser extensions are not cookies. What exactly is CCleaner v6.22 cleaning when it tries to clean your browser extensions?

As I said <above>, I do not want CCleaner accidentally wiping custom settings in my browser extensions (e.g., extra filters and / or custom lists of whitelisted / trusted websites in content blockers like uBlock Origin).

...I moved back to the prior version for now which appears to clean and resolve these extension as in prior. Plus, I hate the new health check with all the added 'checks and balances' verses one health cleaning click like the custom clean. :)

Does anyone know if previous CCleaner versions like CCleaner v6.21 actually cleaned browser extensions, or is this something new that's been added to v6.22?

Cleaning of browser extensions doesn't sound like something that most users would need or want.  See APMichael's 27-Jul-2020 topic Problem with Firefox 79  about a bug in CCleaner v5.69.7865 (released 21-Jul-2020) that wiped custom settings in many Firefox 79 browser extensions (e.g., the user's custom list of whitelisted / trusted websites in content blockers like uBlock Origin) because Avast / Piriform did not revise their cleaning rules after Mozilla changed the way that extension settings were saved in the Firefox storage.sync file.

Since then I've stopped using CCleaner's Custom Clean feature to clean anything in my default Firefox browser, and I now use my built-in Firefox settings to clean select browsing history items like cookies and the Internet cache each time that Firefox is closed.  Note that MS Edge, which I rarely use, has a similar setting at Privacy, Search and Services | Clear Browsing Data | Choose What to Clear Every Time You Close The Browser.

I also never run CCleaner's Health Check tool on my system because I feel it's it's too aggressive and prone to problems.

  23. Hi GuruGabe:

Your issue might be related to the CCleaner v6.22 Health Check bug being discussed in Laza's 13-Mar-2024 Resolving Not Working.

I'm still using CCleaner v6.21 and never use the Health Check or Software Updater features so I won't be of much help to you but you might find some useful information about your Software Updater problem in Laza's topic.

  24. Hi Patrice35:

See Jeff M's 13-Mar-2024 Not Cleaning Edge and Chrome Cookies in the CCleaner Bug Reporting board for a discussion on the same topic.  I posted instructions <there> today on how to find the identifiers (e.g., nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaome) for hidden browser extensions in MS Edge and Chrome.

  25. To see all extensions in MS Edge type edge://system in the address bar and then click the Expand button next to extensions.  For example, the image below shows the extension with the ID nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaome (with an "e" at the end) is the hidden (built in) WebRTC v1.3.21 extension in my MS Edge v122 browser.

If you have a Chrome browser type chrome://system in the address bar.

Note that Malwarebytes Browser Guard and uBlock Origin are the only two extensions I've added to my MS Edge browser.
