    CCleaner query

Listen, this can't be helped - it's a problem that will arise from time to time. The thing is that VLC-player, RealPlayer, Google Chrome have changed their freeware recently. The old path that CCleaner used in order to find the temp files isn't the same anymore. So: these freewares have dropped out of CCleaners list. I do not have VLC-player (Videolan) installed for the moment, so I can't say if it's back. But the bottom line is: programs will drop of the list ever so often until CCleaners staff get them back on. They can't do anything. The decisions are made by other companies. Have patience and wait for the next update. It's not a good idea to use old versions. They are not fitted to mach the new freeware and could cause issues.

    Unsuffiient memory?

Most likely it's a mistake. XP misinterpreted Recuva's activity on the disk as used space. Which of cause is wrong. Recuva only occupied the territory temporarily. If you have Deffragler installed you could run it's analyse function. Chances are that the display will show the usual amount of freespace.
  3. Well this is most likely some sort of a Vista bug. It's a known problem and CCleaner unveiled it. Here's an article about it: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/02/26/h...space-in-vista/
  4. It is possible that these could have contributed to the problem: - Glary Utilities - Wise Disk Cleaner - Wise Registry Cleaner - Revo unistaller I wouldn't use any of them myself as they have the potential to ruin a PC. Piriform's CCleaner and the one inside the free Microsoft online scanner OneCare are the only safe ones. HijackThis is an expert's tool and shouldn't be used without assistance. I use Defraggler from Piriform for defragmenting. I manage startup from inside CCleaner. I also run SpywareBlaster. FileGuard I don't know much about. If you have all the free anti-malware programs from GratisSoftwareSite.nl installed your PC is at hard work. I think you should ask for advise about what programs to run in Piriform Forums Spyware Hell here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showforum=12
  5. Also check IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> General tab -> Homepage. If your preferred Homepage is missing put the link back in. Perhaps Piriform Forum's Spyware Hell can help you. This about:blank phenomenon could be one of their specialties: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=20120
  6. Internet Explorer 6 isn't compatible with Vista, unfortunately. However, it wasn't very secure anyway. Here's another Microsoft article about "Change or choose a search provider in Internet Explorer" http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...ternet-Explorer
  7. I'm sorry. That's not how I read the information. A bit too fast there...
  8. I hope you'll get a useful answer to you question from some of the other users. Unfortunately I can't help you with that one. But I do happen to know that Intel runs a forum of their own, so if nothing else - here's the link: http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/
  9. It's a known bug I'm afraid. It doesn't happen everytime one runs Wipe Freespace but the bug is there all right and CCleaner's developers are working on it. If you clicked the "Run Cleaner" button CCleaner will have wiped everything that it came across before it stopped. So yes, that part is covered. The message about lacking free space you can safely disregard. That was XP misinterpreting CCleaner's activity on the free part of the disk as used space. Which of cause it's not. CCleaner only occupied the territory temporarily. Cancelling CCleaner should not affect your system in anyway.
  10. Which browser do you use? Internet Explorer? I'm not sure I understood you post correctly but if it's about changing the Homepage in the browser it can be done this way. Quoting Microsoft - please click the link below for tiny screenshots: 1.Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer. 2. Navigate to the webpage you would like to set as the home page. 3. Click the arrow to the right of the Home button , and then click Add or Change Home Page. 4. In the Add or Change Home Page dialog box, do one of the following: ? To make the current webpage your only home page, click Use this webpage as your only home page. ? To start a home page tab set or to add the current webpage to your set of home page tabs, click Add this webpage to your home page tabs. ? To replace your existing home page or home page tab set with the webpages you currently have open, click Use the current tab set as your home page. This option will only be available if you have more than one tab open in Internet Explorer. 5. Click Yes to save your changes.Source: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...lorer-home-page Note: If your anti-malware programs have some form of Homepage protection they'll most likely give you a popup asking if you'll allow the change. In some cases you'll have to open them yourself and change the url by deleting the old Homepage link and pasting the new one in it's place.
  11. Did you log in as Administrator?
  12. How about the Recuva Portable version? Sounds like what you're looking for: http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds
  13. No, it isn't. It will repair a lot anyway. You usually skip the files in issue. But you write that it keeps asking for the right CD which is a bad sign. It suggests damage to recently installed files such as service pack files. It is actually possible to make a new CD yourself that can be used for sfc/ scannow but it's complicated. Here's a thread about it: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3678976.php
  14. If you put a check mark in the Show updates box in Add/remove programs you can compare your hotfixes to the ones listed in the link above.
  15. Maybe you need one of the hotfixes listed here. Scroll a bit: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/...1450951033.aspx
  16. In all likelihood this is not a CCleaner problem. But for troubleshooting here's some inspiration: 1. Are you running the latest version v2.24.1010? 3. How often do you run chkdsk and scannow? Files do get damaged from ordinary use. Often times problems like the one you have can be solved by running these procedures. Registry errors are corrected as well. 5. Check if you need updates. The freeware program Secunia PSI can do that for you - you'll most likely prefer advanced settings. Microsoft Update as well but for fewer programs. Use the Custom button in there. Not Express. Secunia PSI: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ 6. A reinstall of IE could also be in question. Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/en-us
  17. I agree with Hazel. More information, please...
  18. Usually it's not something that can be blamed on Defraggler. But for troubleshooting here's some inspiration: 1. Are you running the latest version v1.14.159? 2. Are you sure you don't have malware? You'll need to scan with 3 or 4 different programs in order to make sure. Apart form the main security programs we all have extra scanners (non-realtime) installed with the ability to remove findings. Visiting online scanners frequently is also advisable. 3. How often do you run chkdsk/scandisk and scannow? Files do get damaged from ordinary use. Often times problems like the one you have can be solved by running these procedures. 4. A visit to Microsoft's free scanner listed in my signature below would probably also be of benefit. It's no ordinary scanner. 5. And a long shot: keeping drivers updated by checking the list on the manufacturer's site have solved many a problem. 6. Another long shot: check if you need updates such as Microsoft Visual C++. The freeware program Secunia PSI can do that for you. Microsoft Update as well but for fewer programs. Use the Custom button in there. Not Express. Secunia PSI: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
  19. If you really want secure deletion you'll need Recuva for the job. It has a build-in eraser: http://docs.piriform.com/recuva/technical-...e-file-deletion The link also answers the question about what CCleaner's secure deletion is.

    Cookies

You will need a few (a handful) Google cookies depending on how many Google features or services you use. Examples: www.google.com/accounts mail.google.com/mail google.com/verify google.com The Google cookies wont build up or accumulate on your PC. You can check this after running CCleaner by copy/pasting this into Run: shell:cookies In the folder that opens you'll only find the cookies that you told CCleaner to keep. Plus a few that Microsoft forces us to have.
  21. Do we have any beta testers in here? If the beta version of Windows Media Player 12 can run on Vista and XP without compatibility issues there's still hope... Edit: apparently one needs Windows 7 RC to even download the beta. Edit 2: Don't try this at home but here's a work-around that can trick WMP 12 into running on a Vista OS. It's probably not worth the risk. Not just is it a work-around it also a beta we're talking about. So this is a read only: http://www.techmixer.com/download-windows-...r-12-for-vista/
  22. I think a popup during install would be better. It could just ask if one wants the old settings transferred when it's relevant. Because a transfer isn't possible very often because new features, options, programs etc. are added and old ones disappear or get new functionalities. This is the case almost every time CCleaner's staff issues an update. By the way: only two Cs in CCleaner's name.
  23. Having an antivirus program does not rule out the possibility of malware, unfortunately. Those day are gone. If they ever existed. You'll need to run 3 or 4 different programs in order to make sure. Apart form the main security programs we all have extra scanners (non-realtime) installed with the ability to remove findings. And we visit online scanners frequently. According to reliable reports 60 percent of all computers are infected. A recent report mentioned on CNet confirmed this: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10363373-...torsPicksArea.0 Apart from an anti-virus program you'll also need an anti-spyware program and a firewall. The one that came with your PC - the build-in Microsoft one - is just not good enough. Also: how often do you run chkdsk and scannow? Files do get damaged from ordinary use. Often times problems like the one you have can be solved by running these procedures. A visit to Microsoft's free scanner listed in my signature would probably also be of benefit. Finally: keeping drivers updated by checking the list on the manufacturer's site have solved many a problem.
  24. According to Wikipedia Windows Media Player 12 will be released on October 22 2009 but it will only be compatible with Windows 7. Link - look in the table more than ? way down the scroll: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Player
