  1. So, whats so good about Comodo Firewall?

Turns out my praising of it was too soon and it hadn't been fully tested on my system with multiple softwares because as soon as I launched Internet Explorer it caused McAfee SiteAdvisor to crash, then when trying to use IE's own tools for restricting sites it caused IE to crash, and it even caused a problem with CCleaner. All of the problems it was causing pointed to C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll.

Not only that both the firewall and antivirus don't really uninstall! The antivirus still had an active component after uninstall, thus a System Restore point I made before installing them had to be used to fully get rid of them. I won't be trying any Comodo software anytime soon with their very poor uninstallers.

  2. My anti-spyware:

    1. Firefox.

    2. Common sense.

That won't help you at all if some commercial software on a CD or DVD comes with an add-on that's deemed as adware/spyware by the leading anti-spyware software.

  3. As of today I started using Comodo Antivirus as my secondary on-demand only av software. And I started using Comodo Firewall as my software-based firewall.

I really don't know how good the detection is of the antivirus, and really only kept it installed because ClamWin Free Antivirus my former secondary av scanner was taking far too long (3 times longer than any av I've ever tried) to scan all files on my system.

The firewall however was a very pleasant surprise and is a keeper on my system. It isn't often that I'm very impressed from the get go with a software product, however Comodo Firewall did just that.

  4. There is no way for me to know what reg entries are safe to remove from your computer. Like I said, if you're in any doubt just leave it alone - having a few invalid reg entries will likely cause you no major problems at all, whereas potentially removing needed entries WILL probably cause problems. Its not worth the risk if you're uncertain.

That's the best response I've heard for replying to people that wish for assistance in removing registry entries that we don't know if it's alright or not to remove, it's brilliant actually! :)

I'll have to remember these words because I'm often PM'd from someone asking me what registry entry is safe to remove, and of course I have no ideal.

  5. Don't forget that if your environment variables are not pointing to the appropriate place, CCleaner will delete the wrong files as well.

I still believe that the beginner's guide should give instructions on how to check your environment variable as a precautionary step. :P

I think it would be even better if MrG could code something either in the CCleaner setup file, or CCleaner itself to automatically check and offer to correct the environment variables before CCleaner is first used, and maybe also have a button in CCleaner to check them again at a later date. I only think this is becoming a necessary feature because there's been a few (too many) people claiming CCleaner deleted the contents of the My Documents folder, which I think could possibly a environment variables problem on those systems.

And perhaps if someone is trying to add a filemask like *.* to the My Documents folder in the 'Custom Files and Folders to Clean' area there should be a very informative warning, or a warning and refusal to add a filemask for anything in My Documents.

Perhaps that's all wishful thinking though.

  6. I use zip genius and it can probably do it:

    http://www.zipgenius.it/eng/index.php

Zip Genius may be nice however I guess I'll never know because their download server is either broken or sets a time limit for downloading the file. I can never get the download to go through and I've literally tried to download the program every now and then for the past year, and even my trusty download manager Download Mage which can download just about anything from crappy servers can't get the full setup file.

  7. AVG Anti-Virus WAS working for me until the updates started not to download and install. I use Avast! now.

The anti-virus bugs/problems are a heart breaker in AVG Anti-Virus 7 because allot of people depend upon it as their sole av application. I only hope the remedy they problem but to be honest Avast isn't a saving grace in my opinion as it produces far too many false positives from my past experience with it. Avira AntiVir would be a nice replacement for both in my opinion if only they'd scale back the AntiVir Notifications "ads" for commercial Avira products to once per month because in it's current form it annoys me too much to even bother with AntiVir ever again. Or they could do the obvious as Grisoft did and just have a clickable hyperlink to upgrade to the commercial version without opening a Notification "ad".

  8. You didn't get a positive answer I see, just a "around the bush type."

I finally looked at that thread and it's like I thought and knew from experience that butting into another site/forum to correct someone is usually a waste of time - unless of course the software developer/company which is the supreme authority for such conflicts replies directly to such uninformed discussion to squash it.

It doesn't help when users of any software title don't visit the official software title forum to get a straight and honest reply without it being layered with a run-of-the-mill reply from someone that is making an assessment of a software title they obviously don't even use or understand and are judging from prior experiences with other "similiar" software titles that may have caused grief.

CCleaner doesn't butcher the registry so I don't really get what that person is going on about.

  9. True! The Icon needs to be changed back.

Yeah the icon should have stayed the same in my opinion.

I had saved the icon from Ewido Anti-Spyware 4.0 before uninstalling it. It's only good for changing the AVG Anti-Spyware desktop shortcut to the old good looking and familiar icon. If anyone wants it download the ewido.zip file listed below.

  10. You still shouldn't be working like that, you are going to slip up and possibleyget hurt working under such a sleep deprived situation.

Not if he zaps the perps with a stungun first, heck set it on auto-zap and catch a cat nap for 15-30 minutes.

  11. Just about any zip program can split files such as WinZip (commercial software), WinZip Self Extractor (really easy to use but commercial software), WinRAR (really easy to use but commercial software), etc. If you need a freeware one look into freeware zip/unzip programs like TugZip, 7-zip, etc, albeit I don't know off hand if TugZip and 7-Zip have an archive split funtionality.

  12. I haven't even looked at that post/thread on Dell's website so it wasn't me and I sure wouldn't use someone else's Internet nickname as to me that's a form of blasphemy. Hell it's enough of a problem for me to even visit the Dell website to look for updated drivers/software for my Dell system.

  13. Thought someone with some expertise might set him straight.

Most people on other sites/forums that post such comments aren't going to have their minds changed by someone from here jumping into their dicussion trying to properly inform/teach them. In most cases it's a waste of time to even try.

  14. Work related/induced sleep depravation in my opinion should be outlawed and made illegal everywhere in the world. Employers are insane thinking someone should work a 20 hour day, and then only give the person 5 hours to return to work for another 10 hours. No wonder people go postal at work.

  15. I wonder why the Check for Updates option via the Java icon in the Control Panel never works because according to the documentation it's supposed to be able to auto-update itself. And since it has never worked on my system I don't allow the update checker to run on Windows startup.

  16. If you're on Windows XP you could create a new profile with Admin privileges to see if the same thing is broken in the new profile that hasn't ever been cleaned. If it isn't broken in the new Admin profile it would have something to do with your current user profile and could possibly be narrowed down to something wrong in the registry.

About the only way you're going to discover exactly what's happening is to do some detective work:

    1. Create a System Restore point before cleaning your user profile, while Norton Protected Recycle Bin still works. It also wouldn't hurt to make a known good registry backup with ERUNT in case System Restore fails to restore your system to it's previous state.
    2. Download and install Total Uninstall 2.35 (Last Freeware Version), run a scan with Total Uninstall pretending as if you're installing some software even though you aren't so that it can track the exact system changes.
    3. Use the Total Uninstall option after the preliminary scan to install multiple programs which allows you to exit Total Uninstall yet keep the preliminary scan results.
    4. Run CCleaner and see if Norton Protected Recycle Bin becomes broken, which may require a reboot to determine. Note: Total Uninstall will automatically run after the reboot to determine the changes.
    5. Then looking through the Total Uninstall changes you can look at what possible files and registry keys have been changed or removed.

Sharing your results with the CCleaner developer and Symantec/Norton may fix a potential issue.
