  1. Yeh you must be a tweaker. Use MSCONFIG and disable everything on the Startup tab one by one until successful. It's going to take you quite a while. It's gotta be one of those junk programs you're running. FreeRAM XP Pro? wtf. Popupwasher? wtf. That's awesome (that's sarcasm) how F-Secure comes with Backweb, I mean wtf.
  2. Then explain, Tarun, I'd like to have one that loaded that fast without using a preloader.
  3. Google's meta-cookie is not as much of a concern as everyone thinks it is It's used for a lot of preference saving, across all their products and networks, but also who cares if it's for aggregate data collection? It's not like google's the only one doing it, and their privacy statement is available for all those who are concerned about it.
  4. Yep. No problem. It's a common occurrance around here. I even did it once (but only because I use Firefox preloader, which counts as having one open, even when there's not one open )
  5. That's a pretty crooked observation. If Firefox loads too slowly for you, use firefox preloader. Internet Explorer is integrated into the operating system and has an unfair advantage. Also, IE has a built in popup blocker ever since XP Service Pack 2, so you don't need to download a popup blocker. Finally, not every word deserves a capital letter. You look like a goon. Stop it.
  6. Nah, if you lose a major hive, you're not gettin into safe mode. You'd use recovery console and replace whatever hive is broken with the .rcbak file that RegCompact created. You'd need a tech's assistance if you're not familiar with recovery console, or where the hive files are stored.
  7. Yeah it wasn't a domain name guys. I should have clarified once I found it myself You shouldn't delete the *.rcbak files right away, they're your only ticket out if RegCompact .NET screws up or your registry gets corrupted (they are the backups from just before you ran RC.NET) RegCompact .NET (as in, .NET framework) is a pretty good program. It does exactly the same thing NTREGOPT does, but it makes backups and it is more visual -- it shows you the percentage of each optimized hive -- my classes hive (and another which I forget) went down to 3% of its original size (which isn't much considering it was 256 KB, heh) It's also open source ( if you happen to like the terrifying .NET language ;D )
  8. Y'all are slippin away from the topic... latinadimepiece is having trouble with the EXISTING defrag program... out of memory errors also don't usually mean that you're out of memory... they usually happen when a corrupted EXE runs, or if a program has a severe memory leak... etc... let's try to get back on topic
  9. Howabout using CMD? Start, Run... cmd /c dir /a %systemroot%\downlo~1 >c:\dlp.txt then send us c:\dlp.txt
  10. I'm hijacking this thread.... YOINK: http://www.bbspot.com/News/2005/01/microso...ntispyware.html http://www.bbspot.com/News/2002/10/bsod_ads.html
  11. Don't run CCleaner while browser window(s) is/are still open. Close all browser windows and run CCleaner twice. Failing that, clear your browsers' cache using its built-in function (Firefox -> Tools, Options, Privacy, Cache>Clear) and everything should be fine.
  12. This only happens in rare instances, and usually only in Windows 98/Millennium. I use NTREGOPT all the time in Windows XP. If you run Windows Me or XP, I suggest making a system restore point before you proceed. NTREGOPT doesn't make a backup when it optimizes your registry. ERUNT will, but if something fails (in Windows 2000 or XP) you usually need a technician to assist. It is okay to have registry fear -- that's where *everything* important is -- but in XP it's not very common to kill a system using NTREGOPT (or the like) -- try this freshly recommended product: http://experimentalscene.com/?type=1&id=regcompact It makes a backup before you begin, and a technician can bail you out if something goes wrong (doubtful).
  13. Probably does the same as NTREGOPT. Looking into it now.. Actually it's more complicated than NTREGOPT, but probably still gets the same result. At least it makes automatic backups of the hives, which NTREGOPT doesn't do (as of this post) and you'd normally need ERUNT (highly recommended anyway) to make backups. Seems kinda nice. Thanks for the heads-up on it. I may try it out.
  14. Great, another spam bot. MrG/TwistedMetal: KILL 'internetcleaningtool'!
  15. You probably need/want to create a new profile. Close all open Firefox windows (and any preloaders, if you use one like I do), and then go to Start, Run..., and type firefox.exe -p Create a new profile from there. You could then delete old one if you want.
  16. That's cause there's some weird DNS problems going on (when the round-robin turns over we'll be able to see the .com again) -- that's why I posted an IP for him. Tarun, try IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and see if it breaks your access to google.com -- probably not, but at least it'll prove the theory one way or the other
  17. it IS down o_o go here instead http://216.239.37.99/
  18. browse %systemroot%\downloaded program files\ using Explorer's 'details' view, see if you spot anything 'damaged' or 'unknown' and investigate them -- if you're so inclined, you could also browse that folder using CMD prompt and see if files relating to the Genuine Advantage tool are in there and need to be wiped out
  19. Also, some files are only *flagged* for deletion as they may be in use; restart to have them deleted. Of course many will come back as needed.
  20. Decent convos? o_O Move the convos out and kill the post whore thread
  21. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to repair that kind of greivous error without an uberleet technician present. Most of the time, even with a technician, it's a 'no'. The kind of error that causes what I described above is usually irrecoverable; most of the time you simply have to replace the entire registry with a previous backup.
  22. The best, nondestructive repair program in the universe is Spinrite, but it isn't free (but for what it does, the price sure is attractive, $89) http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm ^^^ Read everything from this site that you can get your hands on. ^^^ They will give you insight on why and how it works. It will keep drives from dying. It can help recover data, by moving it to safe sectors... and more... I highly suggest watching both movies: http://www.grc.com/sr/themovie.htm http://www.grc.com/sr/faq.htm Steve Gibson is an engineering genius who helped pioneer the technology that powers hard drives today. Spinrite has been around for 16 years, and I swear by it constantly. I use it at least once a week at my shop (and refer my other techs to it often). There's a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. I also personally guarantee that the program is worth $89. Whether it can help you fix your drive or not is a different story (obviously it depends on the integrity of your drive). But Spinrite is highly recommend it. I run it on brand new drives to ensure that no sectors are weak by default, and I run it every 6 months to keep my drive in shape (since it rewrites every sector, it prevents weak sectors from appearing).
