CCleaner shows error opening file for writing when try to update.

Recommended Posts

yes. people have been reporting this problem for months, now, but it seems that no one at ccleaner is aware of it.

here is a related thread:

https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/62464-double-installation-dialog-with-manual-update/

my solution for the problem is, rather than allowing ccleaner to update itself, i am uninstalling the old versions and then installing the new ones.

Some of new cc-cleaner updates from this day, 2-3 before, they have arrived with error-messages that can not write?

then i need to select skip to go forward.

i can not cancel or if try again, it does not happen, so i need to skip.

why is this can not write message appearing? can i trust anymore cc-cleaner is working right,

when updates arrive with error-messages, many times those error-messages?

It has been noticed that if you update in a certain way (clicking on 'Check for Updates') then CCleaner will update/install itself twice at the same time.

That isn't what should happen, but it's not normally a problem and one just immediately overwrites the other.
However a write error can sometimes happen if both installs try to write the same file at the same time.
(The first already has the file open for writing, so the second can't write it again).

It doesn't happen if you use 'Automatic Updates' or if you just download/reinstall the new version yourself. (There's no need to uninstall the old one first).
You can always download the latest installer from here: https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
Once downloaded just double click on it to install.

The developers are aware of it, and are looking into why the double install is happening when you use 'Check for Updates'.

Yes, the install is complete.

The correct files are all installed, it's just that one ot them was trying to be installed twice at the same time.

  • 5 months later...

It's been doing this to me for a year now.  I load CCleaner and it says there is an update.  Then if I say update it starts another process and I get the error.  It seems the process it starts will run fine?  But the original process I started is also trying to update and it gets the errors.   I don't see the window that it started, but can see it down on the task bar.

Not real comfortable with it, last few times I removed and reinstalled myself from a download.  This time I didn't, it seems to run fine and shows it is the latest version.  Who knows, been doing this for what seems like a year or more.

Well still doing it, opens up 2 installs at once when clicking on update from prompt that there is an update available. Sorry I don't know what version I was updating, so maybe it has been fixed?

It is known about and on the list to be fixed, but I'm not sure if it has been fixed yet.

As said it doesn't really matter, despite the warning CCleaner still gets installed/updated.
It's just a small annoyance and means you just have to close the message when it happens, unfortunately not everyone knows that and can be concerned at getting the message.

Just close the warning if you get it and carry on with your day.
