My CCleaner Free has stopped working

Recommended Posts

Hi - I have been using the free version of CCleaner for some time, but yesterday I discovered that it no longer functions properly. When I start the "Health Check" it gets stuck about a fifth of the way along the progress bar. It will remain there for ever, until I click cancel... then I get a message saying something like "CCleaner has stopped responding etc etc" and I have to click "Close Program".

This happens repeatedly, not just a temporary glitch.

So I thought I would uninstall and then reinstall. However I cannot even uninstall the program. During uninstallation, the process gets stuck again and never completes. There is a message in the box says "could not load C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCSystem.dll"

I have never removed this dll or any other from the programs folder on C.

I am using Windows 10, all the latest updates installed.

I looked for a customer support email address on the CCleaner website to ask for help/advice but could not find anything like that. I'd be grateful if anyone could advise me how to get the program working again or at least remove it from my computer. Thanks.

I'd download a new installer (just in case there was something wrong with the last install)  and then try reinstalling again, without uninstalling first.

Use the 'Slim' installer from here (3rd one down): https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds

It installs exactly the same CCleaner as the Standard installer, but does the install slightly differently.

Come back and let us know if that solves the problem.

Good to hear it worked for you.

PS. With Windows 10 (and I assume now with Windows 11) an occasional 'Restart' is always a good idea. Especially if something is not behaving as expected.
Without getting technical, a 'Restart' clears/resets the Windows 10 operating system variables more thoroughly than a 'Shutdown-reboot' does.
