ribs44
I am using free CCleaner v4.16.4763, home premium vista. Until recently clearing files of say 1gb with a 7 pass overwrite would happen in a few minutes, now it can be 30 to 40 minutes, sometimes longer. This is the case even when there are no other applications running. My local IT shop specialists have advised that I should not run cleaner frequently, which has been several times a week for the past couple of years +. They suggest every 2-3 months would be more appropriate. My pc is a 3 year old hp pavillion with loads of space, 3gb memory, AMD 9600 quad core processor 2.3 ghz
Moderators hazelnut Posted August 26, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 26, 2014 How long does it take with just 1 pass for example? ribs44
Have not tried 1 pass. The 30 - 40 mins plus referred to above was when I reduced the number of passes to 3. I would assume that it would go quicker but is that relevant the point being it was not performing as it always had done?
Moderators hazelnut Posted August 27, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2014 Hard to know what has changed to make this happen on your PC. Have you changed any security software during the time you noticed the change? Where does it seem to 'struggle'? By the way, lots of people dun ccleaner daily without any problems. I take it you do have it on the default settings? Moderators Andavari Posted August 27, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2014 Perhaps run ChkDsk on the drive it runs slow on. Maybe disk error(s) can cause problems, especially since using secure deletion is more involved than a standard delete. Also look around the forums, it's been mentioned many times using anything more than 1-pass secure deletion isn't recommended.
ribs44
My machine was recently recovered to factory settings due to virus. As part of this recovery my security software was switched from AVG free to Microsoft security essentials. That's when I began to experience slow and inconsistant clearance speeds. Windows defender is closed. I haven't noticed anything else that seems to run slow. I assume it runs on default settings as I hadn't changed what was set when I loaded CCleaner. Example today 1502 secs to clear 2708 mb with 1 pass secure deletion.
Moderators Augeas Posted August 27, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2014 Twenty-five minutes to write 2.7 gb? Doesn't sound too bad to me.
Moderators mta Posted August 28, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 28, 2014 remove MSE and reload AVG and see if the speed changes. that way, at least, you'll be comparing apples with apples. Backup now & backup often. It's your digital life - protect it with a backup.Three things are certain; Birth, Death and loss of data. You control the last.
