formfrank84
Many services run at startup and in the background that are sometimes not necessary. You will realise that you do not need them all but they are started by default. Many of these services are necessary for Windows XP to operate correctly. However, many of them are for features in Windows XP that you may not use at all. You can peruse the services and disable any service that you do not want to run. The fewer services that run, the more quickly Windows XP will boot. To reduce the number of services that start on bootup, you can access two different areas of Windows XP. 1.The first is the System Configuration Utility. You can do that by entering the command ?msconfig? in the run menu. Start Run ?msconfig? (without quotes) || Hit Enter The Services tab shows you the services that start when the computer boots. You can stop a service from starting by simply clearing the check box next to the service and clicking OK. 2.Open Control Panel Administrative Tools Services or Start Run ?services.msc? || Hit Enter Take a quick look at common services you may want to live without: Note that you need to be familiar with the services that are running or you may end up terminating a crucial services that may cause your system to fail. Normally a critical service is automatically loaded during startups but I recommend consulting an expert if you are not sure.
Moderators hazelnut Posted June 25, 2009 Moderators Share Posted June 25, 2009 Hello Frank and welcome to the forum. There have been many threads on the forum about this subject by people seeking the 'holy grail' of a fast boot. I am glad you said about not touching anything unless you know what is what. Many a user has found that out to their cost. Sometimes services have dependancies and it may not be until later when using another service which depends on the one they disabled, they find the service doesn't work and cannot figure out why. metalj
This might help. This might help too. And of course, don't forget to use CCleaner and Defraggler. Piriform Software User Guides
