Windows defrag

Somehow the built-in Windows defragmenter got deleted. I tried to reinstall it, but nothing regarding the degramenter appears in the list of windows components to add or remove. Its strange that other defragmenters like the one from Auslogics still function because I thought they used the default Windows defrag API...

How do I reinstall the standard Windows defragmenter? Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation. It seems like an easy fix, but when I select reinstall defrag and then hit the Go button, nothing happens. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Other options under Tools work, but the reinstall defrag part does nothing. :(

I'm running Windows 2000 if that makes any difference.

There are quite a few fixes in this thread here

http://www.andreasroom.com/blog/archive/20.../18/defrag.aspx

The last resort one when the others have failed, is to show hidden files and folders, going to c/windows, look for the .inf folder, open it and find dfrg.inf, right -click it and choose install.

Read the thread first as most problems seem to have been caused by using 3rd party defraggers.

Thanks for the suggestions, but NONE of the .INF or .DLL files are present on my system. I have NO idea how they would have been deleted. None of the defragmenting software I use is a snap-in for MMC.....I use Auslogics, Sysinternals Contig, and Defraggler.......so I don't know why the built-in defragger files would be missing. Any idea of how I can restore the necessary files?
