thanks Hav0c, never heard of issues with running SFC, but you learn something new everyday. for me, SFC and DISM cover two separate areas. I run > dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth /loglevel:2 and > dism /online /cleanup-image /analyzecomponentstore /norestart /loglevel:2 if they show component store corruption or reclaimable packages then I'll do a > dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase /loglevel:2 SFC looks for modified, missing or corrupted system files. Usually, you never need to run DISM - except for when the SFC commands itself fails. DISM can rebuild the Windows deployment image. then it's time for the /restorehealth command. And after running that, you would then do another SFC and hope it completes.

how to decide? by looking at each one and deciding - that may sound obvious but would you rather be in control or have the programmers code decide for you?

only one conclusion to be drawn - don't solely trust anything Speccy reports.

this issue has been around for years. I first came across it about 6 years ago. there was a MS FixIt for it, but I couldn't find it now. (that portion of the Registry hasn't changed from Win7 to 10, so the Win7 FixIt should still work) there is plenty on the issue, like this one, https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/314060/your-cd-or-dvd-drive-is-not-recognized-by-windows-or-other-programs Method 5 is the one I have had luck with in the past. A 'repair' of WIn10 can be done by, Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Get Started.

in relation to what? if formatting, all the drive is over-written with 0's. if wiping free space, all unused space is over-written with 0's.

what version did you have installed? and what version is it trying to install? the whole update process at the moment is broken, confusing and changing regularly as Piriform release one day and pull the version the next either due to customer feedback or bugs. the latest version v5.47 was recently pulled as was v5.45 (or was it v5.46, I've simply lost count - and the will to care any more). the auto-update process may be trying to access the main or mirror download site and still seeing a new but now defunct version. also, the ccupdate.exe program which was originally intended to be used to update customers in an emergency has now been reclassified by Piriform to update you simply because they deem it important enough.

if you believe the original reasoning for the emergency updater, it should always be 'turned on' - in fact, it should not even be able to be turned off for the very reason it was initially offered - to push an emergency update out to the users. but now with the sneaky, back-door use (abuse) of it also forcing regular updates (and who knows what else) to their users, ccupdate.exe should be, in my humble opinion, deleted on sight.

uninstall your current version first. then go into the Program Files folder for CC and delete its contents (keep the .ini file if you have customised settings) download the latest build from here; https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds (or use FileHippo for previous versions) reboot the PC then install CC from your downloaded file. if you need to convert this Free version to the Pro, go to Options > About and enter your license key. if no luck, try the install with the PC in Safe Mode. if still no luck, and since you are paying for support, try these links; https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/requests/new or email them at support@piriform.com

that's the aspect of all things Piriform does that bothers me the most - the insanely limited, under-utilised, communication pathway they have with their user base on this forum whose actual existence is designed to give them that exact, direct avenue to their customers.

and that forced update, back-door process is wrong on so many levels.

all the free versions of CC are available at FileHippo. then you make it the Pro version by typing in your license info.

cleanmgr is the inbuilt Microsoft disk cleanup program that has shipped with Windows since day one. it has some switches that can extend its cleaning capabilities. start an elevated command prompt and type the command cleanmgr /sageset:1 (where 1 can be any number between 1 and 65,000) that brings up a box where you can tick the categories you want it to clean, usually you would tick them all. then to run that set of categories you type cleanmgr /sagerun:1 (again, where 1 matches the initial number used in the sageset command)

and after that, they are save to delete. what version of CC and Windows do you have?

sorry Ben but I think I may have missed some important point with GDPR.... I thought your legal requirement was to provide a compliant version NOT to force that update on users. Just because you have the means, gives you no authority to abuse that trust and do the upgrade without permission, warning or consent. I have the means to drive my car 200kph down the highway - doesn't make it legal. Please correct me where I wrong here.

I've read the opposite, that MS is improving the inbuilt disk cleanup program. whether they stay with the old command prompt version of cleanmgr or the new Win10 Storage Sense I'm not sure of but either way, they are making it better. for me setting up cleanmgr /sageset:1 with all options ticked except the windows.old settings and a cleanmgr /sageset:666 with only windows.old settings ticked does all the cleaning I require. I run my browser in private mode so no need to clear any of those catergories. to do a 'normal' cleanup, I run cleanmgr /sagerun:1 and to cleanup after a windows update, I run cleanmgr /sagerun:666 I also have a batch file to access any areas not covered by cleanmgr but they are more 'user' areas than system folders. PS: just read the article... interesting. watch this space I guess.
