  1. Hi, there is a website that offers you to download the installers of several free apps in one package and if you click the Get installer button, you will be asked to download the FreeApp.exe thing.

    http://www.freenew.net

Besides that, you get to choose which apps you want to come with the package by checking or unchecking the little boxes, you also get to choose more apps from below the ones prechecked and recommended. You can also choose things like Chrome, Revo Uninstaller, Microsoft Security Essentials and even CCleaner.

The question is, is this even legit???? Even though these apps are free, things like CCleaner are supposed to be downloaded in trusted locations only and so are many of the other apps listed in there.

  2. I believe that only a section of the registry is divided for each user but not the whole thing itself so if you do a scan, that would scan the entire registry including those relevant to other user accounts besides the one you use.

  3. Yeah a big enough solar storm could indeed cause that, and effectively knock the world back into the stone ages. With no electric guitar or PS3 I'd have to be committed to a mental institution, or create a new genre Acoustic Metal - no maybe not.

Don't worry about metal, mate. You can still use all the classic instruments that don't require electricity like pianos, drums and percussion, and acoustic guitars. You can try playing the metal songs on acoustic guitars, maybe they will still sound good.

The next solar storm might happen in 2012 so better pack all you need.

  4. Those are not all the possibilities that can kill the Internet. There are countless possibilities.

One thing that I could say scientifically to put off the Internet for a long time and even cripple the modern world and its economy would be a solar storm. If the sun would have a solar storm, the type of radiation that it will emit will destroy communication satellites and basically ALL electronic devices in the world. It is harmless for humans but the opposite for electronics, imagine, no TV, no computers no cellphones, NO Internet.

  5. I thought your favorite words were 'digital memory cards' as you had the link in your sig.

Anyway 'don't worry' about it as you are now banned.

I thought your favorite word is calm and your favorite phrase "try to stay calm" as reflected near your avatar which is calm looking.

    My favorite word s "glory".

  6. Just to warn people, there has been a lot of paid apps that claim to top the ranks and the reviews on their websites just to get you to use their software.

Something that you could spend some money on could be scams and there are guys making counterfeit versions of CCleaner for example and ask money in return.

But I have to say that Microsoft's own tools for system repair and maintenance are rather slow and has not improved like what I wanted them to be.

  7. Try this thread for some ideas lshi, seems you are not alone

    http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/310...k-problems.html

Thanks for the link, but is that forum the official Windows 7 forum??? It seems quite interesting though but looking to some other source, it seems that I have to enable a different audio device from the BIOS which I did but I found no other audio device besides the default HD audio thing.

However, I am not sure which Realtek Audio Driver is compatible with my sound adapter but if I get a sound card, would that make the front panel work???

  8. OK, first of all, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and since it was installed, my front stereo jack and microphone jacks are not working. When I was still using Vista, they worked perfectly fine. I know I should have asked this long ago.

I do have another stereo jack, another microphone jack and a line in jack on the back of my PC. My speakers are actually plugged on the rear stereo jack and my microphone is plugged on my rear microphone jack.

But I always have to plug my headset to my speakers to hear sounds cause the FRONT jack is not working for a reason I don't know. Plugging the headset directly to the computer's stereo jack somehow gives a better sound quality.

I tried installing the Realtek Audio Driver than came with my motherboard's setup CD but it doesn't work on Windows 7. Back when I was using Vista, I actually enabled the front panel detection from the settings module of my Realtek Audio driver.

I have checked for updates for my sound adapter but there doesn't seem to be any.

Is there anything, I can do to make the front panel jacks work again????

  9. Well IE has long been criticized and considered slower than other browsers such as Firefox. Maybe they have now made a reputation on improving IE 9 following the death of its ancestor, IE 6.

  10. I think "light" registry cleaners like CCleaner are safer for inexperienced to intermediate members to use. Cause CCleaner is less likely to unintentionally delete potentially useful registry entries although there has been issues of it causing a few problems, registry cleaners that detect and fix more issues have more chances of making something not work.

I like CCleaner. Its the most widely used utility software out there because its free, its easy to install, easy to use and of course safer although its not technically the best registry cleaner so to answer your question, CCleaner does not have all the tools needed to give you that new PC feel but at least you will have less errors and less bugs to worry about lurking in your system.

However, if there are any other tweaking freeware I think you can use, you can try Advanced SystemCare Free. Its a bundle of tweaking apps that did not cause me any trouble apparently.

  11. Well Marmite, its better that they put both this 'disaster recovery' options for advanced users and the self fixing and maintaining system for inexperienced and intermediate users. Windows 7 has a great improvement for backup and restore and certainly more would be better.

My other idea is like an improved desktop with the windows of opened programs floating in the virtual desktop that should be quick to access with touch screen monitors.

  12. Lets say you don't have the Windows CD. Even if you had backups, where would you restore those backups cause you need to reinstall the OS itself but how the heck are you gonna do that without the CD???

You are still doomed because your computer is unusable without the reinstalling the OS with the Windows CD....

In short, your PC is inoperable.

  13. I'd rather see built-in software that returns the PC to a fixed state, like roll back software (e.g. RollBack Rx) or virtual machine environments (e.g. VMWare). Disk space costs peanuts these days and I think there should be better built-in recovery mechanisms that allow you to maintain up-to-date system images.

You're not doomed without an OS CD if you have appropriate back-ups!

I believe that a portion of this what you are saying is already implemented on Windows 7. Its called system image. This is done without the aid of any third party programs like Macricum, that some people here especially Andavari would recommend.

You can also create a system repair disk on Windows 7 that will provide recovery options if your computer won't start for instance.

The weakness of these backup methods is that they rely on removable media. Although a system image can be saved in a separate partition, if the physical hard drive itself becomes damaged, the system image will be useless unless of course the system image was saved on a separate removable external hard drive or another internal drive besides the one that broke.

My backup technique is that I always save a copy of an important file on a USB and some are even stored in my Windowslive Skydrive account. I also decided to create a system repair disk. But yes, there are lots of users not considering doing backups.

Windows 7 has done great on backup and restore although its never perfect but mind that backups stored on the same physical drive will be useless if that physical hard drive itself it damaged and become unusable.

I wanted something that would make the PC almost self sufficient.

  14. Now I have Vista Home.... nice and all, but it's a hog. Are there reliable progs to speed up this thing?

And.. ccleaner is a great prog, but I want to have a cleaner registry.. any tips anyone? (a lot of progs leave junk in there when I uninstall....)

I use trillian and am pretty ok with it, but there are prolly better alternatives. I use yahoo, aim, msn, icq (and maybe more) on there.. would like to keep using that... with little or no icons on the buddy list.. keeping it clean, simple, but not TOO basic. Can anyone recommend anything? (and also tell me why it's better)

    Thanks.

You can try disabling the visual effects if you want performance over appearance.

Right click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > hit the Advanced tab> under Performance choose Settings > tick adjust for best performance and OK. That should make the PC look like Windows 98 though but faster.

Registry cleaners should be handled with care. In terms of other free registry cleaners, one that I would consider just a bit safer than most of the other registry cleaners I've used is Advanced SystemCare 3.5. Its basically a bundle of tweaking applications for speeding up the PC.

  15. Anyway ... computer heal thyself ...

    What do you mean exactly?

I want something in it that would prevent it from crashing. I know that in order to do that, you need to do maintenance tasks like what we often discuss but maybe something like "invalid registry entries be fixed or deleted automatically as they are thought to make the PC crash" and you know, automatically repair things that went wrong and notify you if there is anything wrong detected. We know that if registry cleaners deleted something important in the registry, things go bad but if the registry will automatically rid of errors and invalid entries, this can be prevented better especially for inexperienced users.

Better maintenance and repair overall so you won't have to format the computer as often as it is now if something went wrong. Cause if you don't have the CD, you are doomed!!!! Here is one blogger who listed his top ten list of what he would want from Windows 8 and you better look of what's number 9 in his list...

  16. Here is a link about Windows 8.

    http://windows8news.com/

I really wish for some self healing abilities above all.

If I am to be given a change to choose an idea for the user interface, I would like to have a virtually good desktop, with the opened windows floating on the desktop that you can span in a touch screen monitor and you can switch to another opened window just by touching or clicking them but of course you have the ability to disable this if its consuming too much memory.

  17. I use Advanced SystemCare 3.5 and I have used SmartRam and its purpose is to clear RAM usage if its getting too full.

OK, you can disable SmartRam from unchecking it from the list of startup items and if you look at the screesnhot I have for you, I have clicked the Settings button on SmartRam and have unchecked the box saying "Run at Windows Startup" so it will not launch on start up or if its icon appears on the side panel of the taskbar, right click that small icon and Exit. That's how easy you can stop SmartRam if I am talking about the correct SmartRam you are supposedly using and had problems with. Here is a screenshot.
