I got 5 items, including AV and FW.

Here's also virus and spyware removers: http://www.eset.co.uk/index.php (On the left side under "Free Virus and Spyware Removers".)
-
Most antivirus companies have those removal tools freely available, one just has to browse their sites for them.
Yes, but i don't think that many people are aware of this.

F-Secure provides a number of virus removal and system fixing tools from its ftp site. Virus removal tools are used separately from F-Secure Anti-Virus and provide cleaning of a specific infection. Fixing tools perform repair of a system damaged or modified by a specific malicious program. Most of the tools have additional readme files that should be studied before usage.

I'm considering to download and try out Sandboxie. Does all the browser cache files then go to Sandboxie, instead of browser own cache? If i change some browser settings, are those changes stored to SB, instead of browser directory? Can i run downloaded videos from SB? Does SB slow down browsing?

Nice.

Just slightly off topic, but I have to say I like your signature CeeCee. Very nice.
Thanks.

Can Online Armor Firewall be the cause?
-
You need an Uxtheme patcher in order to use non-Microsoft signed visual styles.

Just tried this firewall leaktest and my Sygate 5.6 failed it. PCFlank states, that so far only Outpost Firewall Pro and Tiny Personal Firewall 2005 has passed the test. Can someone who got one of those firewalls confirm this?
http://www.pcflank.com/pcflankleaktest.htm
PCFlank's Leaktest is a small utility that tests any firewall's ability to protect against unauthorized or illegal transmissions of data from a user's computer that is connected to the Internet.

You're not alone JD, mine wouldn't have it either.
Don't work for me either. Could it be, that systeminfo command only works on XP Pro?
I checked with aida32 and mine is installed 18.5.2004. Yes, i haven't reinstalled or repair installed XP, since i got this computer. This computer was build in a computer shop, from where i also bought all the components. Before this one i got used Pentium II, with Windows 98SE. I got that computer about an year. It was my first "decent" computer, with internet connection. I reinstalled that 98SE several times. It was very unreliable and unstable...

Yes, you should update Java (Java Runtime Environment). You can disable automatic update check by going to Java options (Start>Control panel>Java) or going to MSConfig (Start>Run>type msconfig, then going to Startup tab and unchecking Java update.

Btw, here's an simple utility to disable UPnP: http://www.grc.com/UnPnP/UnPnP.htm (from Steve Gibson)

what is SSDP?
SSDP service searches UPnP-devices from your home network.

Is there really any performance increase or advantage to disabling PageFile (virtual memory)?
I don't think that much, if any. I don't think using a pagefile gives any extra boost either, if you got plenty of ram.
You could disable it for testing and see how the things go.
Pagefile can also be consired as a some kind of security threat, as it stores much information. Although you by pass that, if you set pagefile to be cleared at Windows shutdown. Anyhow, that can slow down the shutdown process quite a lot.
-
First and most important - Add more RAM
I've tried most of the Virtual Memory tricks 'n' tips over the years
True.
Same here and i ended up to disable it completely. I got 1536Mb of RAM. I haven't noticed any problems with that.
Basicly disabling pagefile should gain performance, since Windows doesn't have to read and write to hard disk all the time. (I got that info from quite reliable source). But disable pagefile only in case that you got plenty of RAM (1Gig or more).

Is that called in Services:
Universal Plug and Play Device Host?
Yes. WWDC gives you an option to disable it. Make sure that SSDP service is also disabled.

There's a simple solution here....
... just don't use WMP11 .
Well i rarely use it. I use Winamp for music and BSPlayer for video.
-
using another cleaning program (free internet window washer 2.1)
I got IDSuite and i have made a batch file with it, that runs at Windows start up.
-
If the index. dat file is 16kb or 32kb, then it's empty.

I got 4 svchost.exe's running. It's perfectly normal to have multiple instances of svchost.exe running, due that many Windows services are depending of this file. If you disable some UNNEEDED services, you may have couple of less svchost.exe's running.

Have you folks noticed, that Windows Media Player 11 connects/attempts to connect UPnPHost service, every time you open it. http://www.mcse.ms/message2311978.html
I noticed it, because every time i open WMP11, i get an error message to Event Viewer. I get this error message due the fact, that i have disabled UPnPHost service and there for WMP11 can't connect to it (or start it up). Here's the error message:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service upnphost with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{204810B9-73B2-11D4-BF42-00B0D0118B56}
I did some research with Google and found out, that there's currently no way to stop WMP11 from calling UPnPHost.
I didn't posted this message, because i have an actual problem or anything. It's just interesting that WMP11 behaves this way and without most people even knowing about it. Well now you know...
---
It's VERY recommened to disable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) service, because it's an major security threat.
Note: DO NOT DISABLE "Plug and Play" service, because it NEEDS to be running!
