  1. Although the registry cleaner in CCleaner is very nice, is there a way to add a couple things to it? 1) Find as you type (Just like it has for uninstalling programs, to make certain keys easier to find & select, as opposed to trawling hundreds, or thousands of keys.) 2) The ability to just search for certain key terms in the registry. For example: There is a computer that had Symantec 2006 antivirus on it. I ran the uninstaller & it uninstalled, but left keys in the registry. So, I downloaded Symantec remover, but it suggested that a 2009 antivirus was installed that had to be manually removed first (it wasn't). So I had to manually locate each key & remove them manually. Problem fixed, so now I can run sym remover, then install an updated AV! Do you think there would be a chance of adding find as you type to search through the issues found, in addition to a Search Registry function that will let you search for a key term that needs to be removed? This would make the process so much faster, & it would concentrate only on keys that are related to what you need to see if they need removal or not. I would love, love, love to see that. I love the find as you type in CCleaner uninstall list, cause I have seen computers with hundreds of entries & it is like, well, where is that program, but find as you type makes it so much faster & easier! If there is a chance of adding the same feature to the registry scanner, & also a way to search the registry for, say, keys containing Symantec, Norton, or whatever key you need to search for! Thank you guys! Anyone else like this idea too?
  2. After you create the .ini file, like Dennis suggested, then create a shortcut to the ccleaner program file folder & move it to your flash drive. Copy the .ini file to the flash drive as well. Next time you need to install, just drag the .ini file to the shortcut & it will copy it to the windows ccleaner directory for you.
  3. Could you include an example image so we can see just what you are talking about?
  4. Aeth, XP restore, however, has saved my hide in numerous occasions. Don't knock it till you tried it. Sure, Vista may have more bigger ones with more better restores, but who needs that?
  5. I will test again. Perhaps it was a glitch. I will let you know what happens.
  6. Sounds like bad sectors on a drive. Back up your data promptly.
  7. Solution: - Filehippo + older version OR - Sys Restore to older point OR - Remove hotfixes installed since then...
  8. I was wondering if Defraggler had a defrag on reboot, if it would help with files that are in use? It sometimes seems to form a tighter defrag pattern to defrag a drive as an external drive, then add it back... Additionally, I request this because some computers that have never been defragged in years run slow, slow, slow, a whole lot of startup items too. Defrag on reboot would defrag it before windows loads & make it run faster once it started loading their apps! Finally, you would have enough speed to do something without pulling your hair out! Especially on older computers where defragging is REALLY important (but some people don't do it?) Would it help to enable a defrag on reboot option before windows loads? P.S. Defraggler STILL has the same bug where the installer always checks for updates by default, no matter if you uncheck it during install!
  9. I noticed with CCleaner, even after deleting restore points using CCleaner, it seems that there is no free space released from doing so. Restore points seem gone, but space is the same. Any way to make it delete them & recover space? When you use MS restore point control (turn it off, then back on again), the restore points are gone & several gigs of space become free again. I would love to be able to see my free space come back from used restore points. Anyone else feel the same way?
  10. I agree. It could degrade performance. But nothing to brag about. Not that much worse. Windows regenerates them anyway, so it is a very trivial matter. Of course, if you recently removed tons of malware or viruses from a machine, you may not want those to load either. Or, maybe you do. I am not sure. But I don't. And I like a clean machine.
  11. Yeah, but the registry cleaner can cause damage if used incorrectly. There IS no possible damage that can come from clearing the prefetch folder. None. The only possible thing that can happen is windows has to recreate new PF files. So this is not like registry cleaning at all. How can you possibly even attempt to compare cleaning a temp folder like PF, to registry cleaning that is complex & can go horrendously wrong? I have never, ever, ever heard of a PC getting messed up from clearing the PF folder, including the layout.ini (that windows auto regenerates)
  12. The only reason he listed, was performance going down slightly. I really do not care. What is 1 extra second? I just know if I got trash, no matter if it is 1kb, or even 1 file, if it is trash, I want it gone. Windows will regenerate the files easily & quickly enough, so I do not care if having a PF file saves me 1 second because it preloads components needed for the files you are using. I just want them gone, gone, gone! I have tested with & without prefetch, & even with prefetch turned off. At least, if not totally clearing the PF folder, at least give us the option to totally turn PF off without having to manually edit reg keys or use 3rd party apps. I do not like the PF folder, & I suppose that I never will. It is useless to me. Besides, with IE, over time you collect thousands or even millions of webpages, so windows has to spend a few seconds looking into your cache to find that webpage again, & it starts to slow windows back down when DSL or CABLE would pull it up much faster than windows could out of the cache. By the time windows searches a second or two for the file, the website would have it puled back up! Then of course, there is defragmentation. Windows always goes faster after a defrag, hey? But those junk internet files, instead of having to defrag internet trash, it works much faster to get rid of the trash first, then defrag! I know everything you listed about PF files. I have worked with computers for years. I might even know things you never dreamed of knowing about the PF cache. I just know that I do not like having them there, & I want an option to delete them if I want. You keep saying over & over that is is bad to remove, but the main & mostly ONLY reason I see you posting as a reason not to is that it degrades performance. With high speed machines such as mine, WHO CARES? I mean, a second here or there, well, I rather have a clean machine! Besides, if you just removed malware off someone's machine, do you REALLY want it to keep prefetching all the components of the malware AFTER the malware has already been taken off the machine till windows finally gets chance to remove those? Me either! There are just as many arguments against prefetch as there are for, so I see no reason to clean it. If the logic is used that "It speeds up loading applications", then that exact logic can be used against cleaning the internet cache "It speeds up loading web pages!". If we use this logic as an excuse not to clean, it will never get cleaned! Peace!
  13. Well, I HAVE seen a few with false positives, & they had the CD case (new) + # string. Cannot be trusted. Too easy for a customer to take a pic via cell phone, use that key, become licensed user, then you use that key when you actually buy it, get home, & it won't work cause it is "pirated!" No, I won't & I don't ever use WGA. It is annoying, I hate having it up there whether I am legit or not, & I really, really, really hate the way Microsoft lies about it being a "critical" top system update, when it really is not! A computer performs better without it than they do with it! Ok, back to the task manager though. If it is stupid to add it because some user might not understand about this program running a schedule, then having a startup item list disabler is even more stupid because a user might accidentally unload a sound driver for HD audio, or something, that is needed to run audio! I have seen it done, so don't tell me it can't because it can & it was done by someone before I fixed it for them. thank you! don P.S. Having MS install WGA "to be sure" you are not a "thief" is no different than having to wear a webcam monitor 24/7 just to prove your innocent of whatever crime! You like the good ole' police state, eh!
  14. But what good is it to have the post when the problem is already solved by a simple version change? Why would you want to keep old links that point back to old versions of CCleaner that did not do what the current versions are capable of? Post count will remain the same no matter what posts are deleted, as this is a separate cache!
  15. Just like emptying temp files may NOT be good for most users. Did you know? If you LEAVE the temp files in your computer, Internet Explorer actually uses them for a good reason. DO NOT delete the temp files! Every website you go to is stored on the computer in the temporary files directory! This makes it faster, especially if you are using dial-up, because the computer will then call up the stored webpage in it's cache & load it from the harddisk instead of having to check the web for the page! I think Microsoft programmers know better what is good & what is not than most of the users! DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT delete the internet explorer files folder, or you risk LOSING all those stored webpages so that windows can load them faster next time! Besides, doesn't windows auto clear the cache after a preset limit? This of course, is just my way of creating a parody of the prefetch file problem to show you that technically, the temporary files CCleaner cleans could be treated exactly the same way you are treating the prefetch files. I would love if it deleted them all. I have a fast machine, a few extra seconds never hurt anyone, & in addition, windows will re-generate the ones I use pretty rapidly! Of course, if you still insist, I also insist on keeping all my internet explorer temporary websites folder full, because you never know how many seconds it will save to just load the website from the hardisk instead of the internet! Hahaha!
  16. It IS complex. Using the ini files to add them! Same problem exists about "might delete important files" whether automatic or manual. But most users who want to add that would be fully aware anyway, just like using CCleaner MIGHT delete temp files! Simply put, if there is a GUI put to it, similar to the one on Defraggler for changing things, it would be so much simpler, heh!
  17. But I think what my man is basically saying, that if he can see how much the databases are compacted, he can see if it is very little (worthless to checkmark) or a lot(beneficial). For the purpose of analysis is what I believe he wishes it for!
  18. CCleaner appears to delete the history, but on my machine, even with ALL Internet Explorer options selected, & with IE closed totally, & after a reboot after cleaning, yet, I was still able to pull up the history as though CCleaner never touched it! At first glance, it appeared that CCleaner totally removed it all! Then I go to the favorites/history/search. As soon as I search for a website, ALL the history magically re-appears where I can click anything I used days ago or weeks ago or months ago! What gives? How can we fix this bug?
  19. I was wondering if there is a way to add the ability to delete the entire post up here, after your requested feature is added? It would be difficult to moderate all posts, but giving the user the ability to either delete the post themselves, or at least the option to checkmark a post & lable it expired so the moderators can have it brought to their attention which posts are obsolete. I noted that in one case, the find-as-you-type uninstaller was added, so I think a way to alert moderators of posts that are already "expired" or no longer needed, would be great! Why keep a post about adding a feature once it is already added? It would be so nice to be able to checkmark a post for a moderator to review for deletion, because this would add a new level of "self moderation" & keep moderators from having to go through every post! A user should be able to mark a post for deletion, give the moderator a brief reason why, & if the moderator sees that is true, then he/she can delete the post & it will clean things up a lot!
  20. This sounds fine, as long as prefetch is working good & all your programs are there. But just as many times as it helps, it is also detrimental to performance. What happens, is EXE are regularly removed, uninstalled, renamed, deleted, etc & the prefetch folder attempts to load something that no longer exists, slowing the boot process down while windows checks for that program & no longer finds it. Additionally, when you have malware & the malware is prefetched too, you do not really want that to happen, do you? Faster loading malware? Also, what happens when you remove malware, but the prefetch entries still exist? Hmmm? Adding the ability to totally remove the Prefetch folder will NOT harm anything. At worst, the layout will be recreated, & users will be able to delete all the entries so they can get rid of malware that is already set to prefetch, in addition to missing EXE files they have deleted/moved/uninstalled. There may be "downsides" to removing the prefetch folder such as more time booting, but there are so many benefits, I see no reason it should not be included!
  21. Try reading here: http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14989 Have you checked your IE & FF settings to be sure you do not have the toolbar installed? Additionally, users reported that the ask toolbar sometimes did & sometimes did not ask to be installed. I just know that when I tried it with me, it did install it. Try completely uninstalling KMP, then installing the new one again. Then again, it is possible they may have fixed that by now. But if you check that link I sent you above, you will see that many others had that issue as well.
  22. http://www.filehippo.com/download_kmplayer/ Unless they changed it, the 2.9.4.1436 version (the very latest) had the Ask Toolbar included. I am assuming that you are using the 1435 version or earlier, which is probably why you never had that problem. Test it & see!
  23. I love how easy & simple/portable your products are. How I wish that you guys could make a portable firewall that could save settings in an ini file. The current offerings in firewalls do not impress me, for they are either too complicated, or they mess up settings on the computer if you are not very, very careful! Wish you had a firewall program! If you ever decide to, I will definitely try it out! This is what I am missing! Thanks for your good softwares!
  24. If you are wanting to save the IE drop down history, try unchecking CCleaner Autocomplete as well as the Recently Typed URL's. Autocomplete is the saved form information, while Recently Typed URL's are the visited locations on the web. If you are wanting to preserve those on your web browser, try unticking the 2 listed above. Thanks!
  25. Additionally, if you are running SFX programs created by Win Rar, they will extract to the temp dir, & auto remove (cleanup) files & folders after they are closed. Did you by chance have open programs running & then close them that used SFX capabilities? This would help explain the "disappearing" temp files. Additionally, a before & after screenshot would also help greatly, as like the previous user stated, it is also possible to encounter locked system files. Perhaps your index.dat files are really huge & have never been cleaned before? These are only removed on reboot!
