  1. LONDON - Looking for love and heading to Europe? Why not learn corny pickup lines in six languages before hitting the Continent? Showing the language of love is universal - and sometimes universally cheesy - a Scottish publisher released a list of 10 phrases on Tuesday with their equivalents in Czech, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. 3. Glad you decided to stay Cowboy and obviously other people are too. It's interesting you said that the TrendMicro scan didn't complete before using AWC. The same thing happened to me. I know that it doesn't like dialup and the slow connection seems to be an issue. I've also noticed they seem to be working to improve the scan and it's definately better than it was a few months ago. And thanks to everyone that replied in this thread and/or PMed me or Cowboy. I appreciate it and although I can't speak for Cowboy I bet he does too. We've got a good group of people in this forum.
  4. I found this on the page hazelnut mentioned in her post Be careful with your flash/thumb drive and thought it was interesting. Might be worth a look if you're curious how a hard drive operates and what is inside one. It's surprisingly simple for such a precise and important piece of hardware. Inside Your Hard Drive
  5. Veering slightly off topic, I thought the quick change artists were pretty amazing. I just don't see hows it's possible to completely change a wardrobe in a couple seconds.
  6. I did the same thing and came to the same conclusion. That's why I didn't say anything really negative like l never use this again, etc. I will probably try it again when I have time and try to see if I can determine what changes it makes and go from there. One thing I did really like about it was that it uses TrendMicro for its online scan which for me seems to be one of the best online scanners. It often finds items that others don't and although I don't know for sure that they aren't false positives [the last scan said I had Abetterinternet which I don't think I did] I'd rather be safe than sorry. As far as Yahoo goes, I don't know if you read this link from the spywareinfo forum but it's discouraging that some of the big names on the internet do not do more to discourage intrusive and annoying practices or worse, encourage or enable them. Thanks for the reply, btw. Your previous post made it sound like you were leaving the forum, and personally I hope you stay. I agree with you that some people here seem to be inclined toward negativity and/or don't respect the opinions of those they disagree with. But what makes this forum worthwhile are the people who really listen to and care about other members and their concerns and at least for now they seem to outnumber by a large margin those that don't. You've helped me in the past and hopefully you'll be around to help people in the future.
  7. I tried this program and it seemed OK but then: While updating SpywareBlaster I noticed that it said ' 1 item has protection disabled." Since I hadn't disabled any protection I scrolled through the list and I found out the item was Overture. I did a Google search for "SpywareBlaster Overture" and the first link was to spywareinfo.com where it said that Advanced Windowscare V2 does this. spywareinfo
  8. Have you tried right clicking on the current icon, then clicking on Properties, then the Customize tab, and then Change Icon? Then you can choose from a selection of MS icons. If you had a custom icon then that probably won't work although you can navigate to a different folder with more icons if you have one from there.
  9. You're right [as usual ]. They're being sued but that's as far as it's gone so far. Article
  10. I live in Colorado now but I grew up in New Jersey. We went over the CB Bridge Tunnel while vacationing in Virginia. There are two major Navy shipyards in the area so we got to see a lot of Naval vessels.
  11. I read that Limewire was the latest site to be shut down because of music industry lawsuits.
  12. If you haven't fixed your taskbar yet the attached program may help. My taskbar was visible but wouldn't retain any settings and this fixed it right up. TaskbarRepairToolPlus_.zip TaskbarRepairToolPlus_.zip
  13. Has anyone ever been on the Chesapeake [sp?] Bay Bridge Tunnel? It's 16.4 miles long and consists of 3 bridges and 2 underwater tunnels. When I was going down into one of the tunnels an aircraft carrier was going over it. It wasn't scary but it was pretty awesome.
  14. The first link didn't seem to want to work but I found this Wiki with some cool pictures of the Millau Bridge: Wikipedia
  15. I was really surprised by his mixed review. He praises the Application cleanng and then says this about the Issues scan: ?!? That's just plain wrong . I looked over the guide in more detail last night and really didn't make too many changes to my PC. I still think it's very informative and a good way to learn about Windows or to use as a reference guide. I really like the way he uses hyperlinks to point to more in depth information from Microsoft and other sources. The links to the hardware vendors and the freeware apps are a big help at least for me. And I did find out how to fix a few things that have been driving me crazy for quite a long time: Windows not remembering their view settings after being closed and reopened. How to get rid of the stupid boxes under the Desktop icons. And how to keep the icons set to specific positions on the Desktop instead of them rearranging themselves after a reboot. So in my case it's FTW! lol @TwistedMetal That is an excellent guide you came up with. Good idea having it both on and offline. Maybe we can get Mr Ghazi to read it and realize that Ccleaner won't harm "the delicate Registry." CCleaner too aggressive?? Now there's something you don't hear everyday ...
  16. This site has a ton of information. The name doesn't do it justice in my opinion. It isn't the usual kind of site where the author tells you to disable tons of services and modify settings in the registry, etc. On the site there is a free download called the Tweaking Companion [177 pages, PDF format]. It describes every aspect of Windows and PCs in detail using easy to understand language. Discusses what the default settings are and why they are set that way Indicates which settings you can change and what to expect [good or bad] if you modify them. But for me the best part is the comprehensive information about WindowsXP One of the many neat features in the guide is that there are many links you can follow for more information. For instance if you're in the drivers section there are links to places to find the latest drivers such as the vendor's site. There are also a lot of links to helpful software [usually free] for using with the guide or to enhance Windows or the PC.
  17. More than happy to try to help, I learned a lot too. I wish it worked out better for you than it did but if you get a second card you'll be set. Having an extended desktop is nice, it saves on a lot of opening and closing windows and switching back and forth, etc. Take it easy and good luck!
  18. I just checked the ATI site and it says your card will only work with one monitor plus the TV. I guess the person that told you it was compatible with two monitors meant that it will support two monitors if you have two cards and not that the card itself will run two monitors on its own. So the advice above about using a different cable or an adapter on a second video output on the ATI card won't work except that maybe you could have two monitors showing the exact same thing which isn't what you want. It looks like your best bet is to find or purchase another video card for one of the PCI slots. That's a helluva video card BTW! I like the built in TV tuner and all the video and editing features it has. I had to click on and accept a legal agreement just to look at the picture of the card itself. Let me know what you decide or if I can be of any help. This is a total long shot but can you use the TV as a second monitor and extend your desktop onto that? I really doubt that's possible but it may be worth a try. The documentation may mention it somewhere if it is.
  19. Sadly I don't think so. It doesn't seem like the video card built into the motherboard works with dual monitors. I found this in the troubleshooting guide: So it sounds like you have to have seperate cards to use dual monitors. Or maybe that the built-in card is an ISA/EISA type of adapter so it won't work. Since it says VGA as opposed to SVGA it sounds like a really basic type. Advice you probably don't want to hear: You could buy a bargain basement PCI card to drive the second monitor or see if the new ATI card has a similar version in PCI rather than AGP. If so maybe they would let you exchange it if you explain about how it doesn't support dual monitors on your system. Since I'm not a gamer I don't know anything about the advantages of AGP verses PCI but lokoike and some other people on the forum could probably give you advice about that. If by chance you have an old PC around or know someone who does you could rob a PCI type of video card out of that and see if it would work in your system. Sorry this didn't work out well but I'll let you know if I think of anything else that might help. Let me know if you have any other questions or ideas. EDIT: You may be able to run two monitors with one card if it had two video outputs. There may be a second video output that uses a different type of cable than your monitor is using now. If so, if your monitor has a different cable connection the same as the second one on the card you could try connecting it with that after buying the right type of cable. Or if there's a second different connection on the card Radio Shack more than likely has an adapter that could adapt the connection to your current monitor cable. I'm not sure if that would work but it might be worth a try.
  20. So there is intelligent life on other planets !
  21. CustomizeGoogle CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam). My favorite extension. Removes ads, adds alternative search engines to try in the results screen, allows you to go directly to an image from an Image Search [without the stupid frame on the page]. It also has loads of other settings to customize Google related pages including an option for disabling their various tracking and identification features. AddBookmarkHere Easily add bookmarks via the rightclick context menu or in the Bookmarks tab. Image Zoom Easy to use extension that works with Firefox, Mozilla, Thunderbird, Netscape and Flock. If you have ever had an image that was too large to fit on your screen or too small to see the finer detail in your browser or email, then image zoom can help. Image zoom gives you complete control of the size of most images displayed in mozilla based software. Both individual images or whole pages of images can be zoomed. Remove It Permanently [RIP] Rip (Remove it Permanently) provides the ability to point at and remove permanently any item you can select. It provide a flexible and easily configurable solution to removing unwanted content from a web page. If it is just image based ad's removal you are looking for I suggest you use the rather excellent AdBlock extension and download a good list of regular expression for this extension. If on the other hand you want the power to choose what content you want removed, be it unwanted forms, text based ads or just areas of a page (or website) you don't want to see anymore, RIP is for you. Dict The Dict project is a Mozilla extension that lets you easily look up the definition of words on a Web page using an online dictionary. Simply select a word, right-click, and you'll see a menu option to define the selected word. The definitions are returned in a new window. IE Tab IE Tab, an extension from Taiwan, embeds Internet Explorer in a Mozilla/Firefox tab. This extension is derived from the famous extension IE View, but much different. While IE View always open IE-only pages in a seperate Internet Explorer window, IE Tab can view them in a Mozilla/Firefox tab. McAfee SiteAdvisor Color coded warnings about sites visited in the Status Bar. People seem to have mixed feelings about this extension but it doesn't seem to slow anything down and can serve as an added layer of protection by listing issues other people have found with the site. The website has a lot of info on what it does and how it works. CuteMenus Adds colorful icons to all menu items. Makes it easier [or at least more interesting] to read various menus.
  22. I also think it's a great idea. I have found a lot of great extensions by seeing what other people are using and if people have a bad experience with an extension it would be good to know that, too.
  23. Yes, you should be able to install both the new card and the old one. They should not conflict with each other but if they do it should be something that is easily remedied by switching the slots they are in or changing some settings in Device Manager or Display Properties. In reality though you probably won't have any problems and will be able to use both monitors. I have an old HP Vectra PC and for a long time I used two and even three video cards without any problems until my monitor had a hardware failure. The failure was not caused by the video cards BTW but because I swatted a fly on top of the monitor [lightly]. Of course it was my best monitor, lol. Now it just shows jibberish along with a loud screeching sound. I am probably the only forum member to be outwitted by a fly . In my defense, it's only happened once. So far...
  24. Aha! Now [i think} I get it! I had a computer with the same problem. My understanding was that the video card built into the motherboard won't work with 2 monitors. I think it's because it's just a very basic video adapter. However, if you have an empty slot you should be able to reinstall the old nvidia card and use that for the secondary monitor. If it's a PCI card you may have to follow the procedure for installing it in the first PCI slot as mentioned earlier. EDIT: I guess it's an AGP card since you said it uses the same slot as the new one. Hopefully that will work. If it does you can then use the Display Properties screen to arrange the desktop the way you want by using the new monitor as the primary desktop, etc. Crossing my fingers...
