  1. I just updated and now the About says 2.0. Before it said Firefox 2.0 b2 I believe so it looks like your update was successful. Thanks Eldmannen for posting about the update. For some reason it didn't come up automatically when Firefox started like the other updates did.
  2. Glad I could help ! It's nice not to have to have that ugly Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. I like your desktop. Nice and simple. Minimalism at its best.
  3. TweakUI from Microsoft will let you remove the Recycle Bin. It's under the Desktop section. TweakUI lets you change a lot of other settings, too. TweakUI
  4. This is one of my favorites. From Donald Rumsfeld: The Unknown As we know, There are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know There are known unknowns. That is to say We know there are some things We do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know We don't know. ?Feb. 12, 2002, Department of Defense news briefing
  5. Eldmannen's right about keywords automatically attracting unwanted attention. The government was monitoring all overseas calls long before 911. If a "suspicious" word was said a computer would flag the call for further attention. This has been going on since at least the 70's. I read the Google and Yahoo news sites every day and I get nervous if I click on a news story and it takes me to an Arab site, especially if it's Al Jezeera (spelling?) Is that enough to get the Feds interested in what I'm doing online? Seems silly to be so paranoid but who knows in this day and age?
  6. I was always looking for icons I liked and could never seem to find a set that included everything I needed. Then I began to think that icons in general distracted from the desktop image. I finally figured out how to get the clean look I wanted and ended up with no icons at all !
  7. You are the master of saying that which would otherwise be unsaid !
  8. I fell for a phishing scam one time. It was PayPal and looked very authentic. I did notice the address was wrong however and thought "Hmmm, that's strange. PayPal has a Hometown AOL address ." Being not too bright sometimes I continued on. Lucky thing about being not too bright I also put in the wrong PayPal password which was accepted. This finally clued me in and I stopped. The thing that really got to me was that PayPal was very helpful and so was NetZero. They both gave me instructions and resources to use and said they would investigate. Once AOL asked me if I was inquiring about setting up a Hometown AOL account and I said I wasn't, the conversation was over. Nice to know they are so concerned about their service being used for fraud!
  9. I was going to bring this up when someone mentioned subliminal messages the other day but I didn't get around to it. This story still amazes me. Since so many different kids were affected by it makes me wonder if it was intentional in some way. Japanese cartoon triggers seizures in hundreds of children. I don't know how many people remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer was having unexplained seizures and they finally figured out it happened whenever he heard Mary Hart's voice. That actually happened to a woman in real life. If you Google Mary Hart's voice and seizures there's a lot of articles about it.
  10. This guy came up with an interesting idea for a home built computer case and he's doing his bit for recycling at the same time.
  11. I haven't had much experience with the registry so please bear with me if this is a dumb question: Should it have been a DWORD value to begin with? Or is it not unusual to have to change entries from a binary value to a DWORD value? I had a feeling it wasn't really matching up with the written instructions about changing the settings but I didn't want to risk deleting the binary value without being sure I was right. I'll have to check out that registry editor. Most times when I have to find something in the registry I do a search with RegSeeker and then find the corresponding item in regedit. Not a real effecient way to do it. I can't recall if I ever found anything using regedit's search. I seem to remember feeling sorry for regedit's search function as it flailed about aimlessly like Mr. Magoo looking for a needle in a hayfield without his glasses. I figured the only humane thing to do was put it out of its misery and use RegSeeker instead. Speaking of which, have you tried using Locate32 instead of Microsofts regular search function? Locate32 doesn't have the option to view search results as thumbnails but it's much faster.
  12. Yes, that's the one. I couldn't create a new DWORD value named NoSaveSettings because of the existing one. I tried modifying the original one but couldn't so I renamed it NoSaveSettings OLD and then was able to create and modify the new DWORD Value. Now everything is working great. Is the original NoSaveSettings corrupted or something? The new entry looks nothing like the old one. I think it was Kellys-Korner that had an image of the settings like the one of mine below. After I saw the settings on their site I figured mine were messed up. Do I need to change any of the other settings? I guess I don't need the utility from the donationcoder website but I'm glad you mentioned it. It looks like there are a lot of useful utilities there and some fun ones too. As always, thanks for the help and advice !
  13. Does anyone know if there is a way to keep the Desktop icons from rearranging themselves when the PC is restarted? I've tried: Looking for an app or utility. Apparently the ones that work you have to pay for and the free ones are malware. Tweaking the registry. Installing layout.dll from Microsoft. Unchecking all the options in 'Arrange Icons By' for the Desktop only and also for all folders. Every time Windows starts the options are checked again, on the Desktop only. Gluing them in place with CrazyGlue. Curse words and threats.
  14. That's almost half price! The price doesn't take into account the added expense of having the paramedics revive you when you realise you forgot to take it out of your pocket on laundry day. Kanguru 64GB Flash Drive at TigerDirect $2799.00 Buslink 64GB Flash Drive at Engadget $5000.00
  15. Just curious, did you try Sandboxie or think you might? I've been using it for a few days and really like it. It's definitely different than most anti-malware programs and confusing at first but it seems like a nearly foolproof way to prevent malware. I like the fact it doesn't slow down the PC at all and doesn't need any user interaction like firewalls often do. It doesn't need to be updated except when a new version comes out, etc. If you do try it, please let us know what you think . Thus endeth the Mike Rochip Sandboxie Infomercial .
  16. I found this on the Adobe Support site, hopefully it will work for you. Error "1713" when you remove Acrobat Elements (6.0 on Windows) Issue
  17. I think the most promising therapy would be for him to have an extended stay in the good ol' USA. It would do him a world of good. I would be willing to do my part by living in Sweden while he is here recuperating. That's just the kind of generous guy I am . Actually, I just want to live in Sweden and I'm hoping this will work...
  18. I stuck up for him when he made fun of res45's theme but he's on his own on this one !
  19. Here are a couple utilities that monitor hard drive temps and various other attributes: Hdtune Hddh.exe [Panterasoft] Everest The first two are utilities for the hard drive only. If I remember right both of them can be set to display the hard drive temperature in the system tray. Everest displays a wealth of information about the hardware installed on your computer including reporting the temperature of any hardware that has a temp sensor..
  20. I have a folder called "Installers" where I keep all the setup files from programs and apps I've downloaded from the internet. There are both zip files and exe files in the folder. Whenever I open the folder, and before clicking on anything inside of it, ZoneAlarm says explorer.exe [Windows Explorer not IE] wants to access the Trusted Zone. If I allow it, explorer.exe then asks to access the internet. When I look in the ZA logs there are 2 instances of explorer.exe connecting [outgoing] to a loopback and then 1 connection [outgoing] to nyc-dns.nyc.untd.com which I think is NetZero. Does anyone know why this happens or what explorer.exe is trying to do? Is there any way to see which app or program is trying to make a connection? Until recently it had never happened before. Also, I'm not sure if this is related but it seems like sometimes shortly after allowing explorer.exe to access the internet, Windows Defender gives a notification that it has allowed a change to a known application of vmodem.sys or vpctcom.sys. which are drivers for my dialup modem. Is there any reason something would want to modify those files? I don't think they are actually being modified because I'm using Sandboxie and I'm not allowing it to write any changes or info to the hard drive. One more question: While I was getting the information for this post I noticed ZoneAlarm had changed the action for explorer.exe from Ask to Allow. I did not make that change and I've seen ZoneAlarm do this for other programs such as LSA Shell [Export Version]. Is there a way to tell ZoneAlarm that I really meant it when I told it to Ask before allowing access ? . Thanks for any help .

I think he was just trying to be funny. His comment made me laugh just coming out of the blue like it did. I was just trying to be funny with my comments too. Geniuses are often misunderstood I guess. Of course that doesn't explain why I'm misunderstood...

! Wow. Kinda harsh. As if the popup issue wasn't bad enough. What if he created that theme and is very proud of it? I think in the spirit of fair play you should post a screenshot of your theme so res45 [and the rest of us] can voice our opinions. Besides, I have a feeling you secretly use the Yahoo! toolbar when no one is looking !
  23. Thanks again for the tips Humpty . I made the default browser Firefox and replaced the Sandboxie Quick Launch icon with Firefox's. That was a great idea. No I don't have to worry about forgetting to run Firefox in the sandbox. I created a new partition 'S' and named the volume Sandboxie. Makes it fast and easy to see what's actually in the sandbox. But could you explain how to do the following? It sounds like doing what you say will mean I won't have to sort through all the recoverable files when I close Sandboxie to update the bookmarks and other changes made when Firefox was Sandboxed. But I'm not sure how to do what you're recommending. You might want to type slowly and use small words so I can keep up . More questions: Do you have more than one Sandbox? When would it be a good idea to have more than just the default one? Is the Quick Launch icon you created for Firefox a regular shortcut and how do you mean it's hidden? I don't think ZoneAlarm is having any issues with Sandboxie but is there something I should keep an eye out for? I appreciate all your time and advice.

Do you have Java enabled? In Firefox it's in Tools>Options>Content tab. Mine is set to Enable Java, Enable Javascript, and under Advanced none of the options are checked. You could also try the Disable Other JavaScript Window Features tweak on the Firefox Tips web page. The tweak makes it so you can resize popup windows amongst other things. It basically adds all the options available on a regular web page to popup windows.
  25. Thanks rridgely, those are great ! I have COPS on the TV while I'm watching the video and there's a guy who can't sit down like the officer asked him to because he has an uncapped hypodermic needle hidden in his crack. Now there's a guy who broke into someone's house and decided to take a (bubble) bath before leaving with the loot and got caught which is ironic because he was trying to make a clean getaway bwahahaha...
