  1. I found this on the PC World website: I would have figured it would be in the Ccleaner folder like TheFiresInTheSky said. . There were a lot of other theories about the error log and where it is but DrWatson was mentioned more than once. Hopefully this will help.
  2. Hi Pam- I saw this in this thread and it's worth a try to see if it removes the DC382 file. Download the killbox program from here. It will be a zipped file. After it dowmloads unzip the file. I can't remember if Win98 unzips files automatically or not. Double click on the Killbox file and hopefully it will take you to a screen where it says Extract All Files. Click on that and then click Next and then click Next again. Then click Finish. Now double click on the Killbox.exe file that was created [not killbox.zip]. It should have a red circle with a white X inside it. The following screen should come up. You can click the thumbnail to make the image larger. Type in or copy the path to the DC382 file into the white box. It should be C:\Recycled\DC382. Then click on the red symbol to the right of the box. The file should be deleted. If not type the info into the white box again if it's not still there. Then check the box for "Delete on Reboot." Restart the computer and it should be gone. Let me know if you have any questions or if you weren't able to unzip the killbox.zip file.
  3. I watched an episode of Nova on PBS called "Dimming the Sun" that is about how particles of pollution in the air are making the Sun appear dimmer to people on the Earth. I had it on in the background while using the PC because I didn't think it would be all that interesting. After all it seems pretty obvious that would be the case. It was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. Particulates in the air could be reducing the amount of the Sun's energy reaching the Earth by 20% or more. What this means is that while the emission of greenhouse gasses are increasing global warming, the emission of particulates like soot, ash, and sulfur are greatly reducing its speed and severity. What is really worrisome is that the predictions of global warming that scientists have formulated up until now have not taken this into account. According to Nova, if we reduce the amount of particulates in man-made pollution, which of course a lot of countries are trying to do, it will almost certainly mean that global warming due to greenhouse gasses will greatly increase. Not only will global warming occur faster than predicted, it will lead to much higher temperatures in coming years. So it appears that the efforts to combat global warming are going to be a lot more complicated than thought before and some of the current proposals will make it worse. If anyone is interested, the web page for the episode is here, and there's a transcript of the episode here.
  4. It could be one of those things or a number of other things, worst one being your hard drive is going to fail. You may want to start backing up stuff in case it is. DjLizard wrote a great little program that will check the parameters and functions of your HD. You can find it in this thread, in the 3rd post down. It will let you know if the hard drive is indicating it is going to fail. You can also look in Event Viewer under System to see if there are any warnings, but Dj's program is a lot more informative.
  5. If you have an ancient TV like some of mine, you probably need to put it on channel 3. More modern ones will often have a "channel" called AV input, auxillary input, line in, or something like that. It may be where channel 0 or channel 1 would be. Basically, you would put the cable from your video card into the input where you would connect a VCR cable to the TV. If you have a VCR already connected, you could put the cable from the video card into the input on the VCR, where the antenna or the cable connection is now. Just to be sure, you should now have 2 cables coming out of the Ati card, one that goes to the monitor and one that goes to the TV. Hope that helps, if not let me know. I'll be here on and off most of the evening. Good Luck ! BTW, what are these happy pills you speak of?! I need one at least as much as Eldmannen does!
  6. Do you mean playing a movie on the TV while doing something else on the computer? If so, there should be a video player that was installed when you installed the software and drivers for the card. It's called the Ati Multimedia Center. Also, check to make sure TV display is enabled. After it is is enabled you should be able to open the Multimedia Center and play the movie with File Player. These instructions are from the Ati All In Wonder 9800 Pro Website. To enable and disable the television display 1 Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. 2 Double-click Display, then click the Settings tab. 3 Click the Advanced button, then click the Displays tab. 4 Click the green enable/disable button next to the word "TV" to enable/disable television display. 5 Click OK or Apply to save the changes you have made. For information about how to use television display and the ATI Displays Properties page, click the Help button. Starting the ATI Multimedia Center From LaunchPad. The LaunchPad provides a convenient way to start all your Multimedia Center features — just click the one you want. LaunchPad opens automatically when you start your computer, or if you prefer, you can right-click LaunchPad, and uncheck Load on Startup in the drop-down menu to disable this feature. From Windows taskbar. 1 In the Windows taskbar, click Start, then point at Programs . 2 Point at ATI Multimedia Center , then select CDAudio, DVD, File Player, LaunchPad, Library, TV, VideoCD, or Configuration. The first time you launch TV, you must complete the Initialization Wizard, which guides you through setting up TV. After that, the Wizard will not run unless you want to re-run it. For information on the ATI Multimedia Center, see the online help.
  7. Thanks a lot lokoike! Based on your advice I was going to throw one of those in. But I can't because it's out of stock . I never read the fine print because it's too hard to see. Besides, if it was important it would be in big print.
  8. You're welcome. Glad I could help. Oh, and welcome to the forum by the way !

    Custom PC

I've read that Vista will require a high end graphics card as part of its basic requirements because one of the major features MS integrated into Vista is more advanced graphics rendering. If you don't have a compatible graphics card you may not be able to see the graphics as they are meant to be or worse it may slow down performance. I'm sorry I don't remember where I read that so I don't have a link but if I run into it again I'll post it in this thread. So it looks like if you want to run advanced games and Vista you will need to spend some money on a good video card.
  10. Did you click on the link? It should take you to the online Beginner's Guide. You could also click the link below to get there. On the page that opens there should be a table of contents on the left hand side with Roman numerals. Beginner's Guide Let us know if that doesn't work.
  11. I'm glard you got it working. I haven't installed it because I'm on dialup . I figure it would slow down my connection while it's receiving info from the net. I'll probably give it a try though. As to why IE wouldn't download the file I'm not sure. The only thing I thought of is maybe your security settings are set too high. If you go to tools>internet options and click on the security tab see if the slider is set to High. Mine is set to Medium-High. How do you like the ticker?

    RC1

I read somewhere that RC means its very close to a final release and minimal changes if any are predicted to be implemented. In real life it sounds to me that means it is still a Beta.
  13. Hi Darkman- I was able to download the file and I'm submitting it to Jotti's virusscan but it looks like their server is really busy [80%] so it may take quite a while before it is scanned. In the meantime maybe you can try downloading the file attachment below and see if that works. OK, while the attachment was uploading to Ccleaner the Jotti scan completed-see the thumbnail. I'm not sure what to make of it. Maybe someone who knows more about malware and/or how a sandbox works can help. Good luck, hopefully you can download the installer here and that will get you going. You will have to unzip the attached file. Ccleaner does not allow .exe files to be attached. myt_setup.zip myt_setup.zip
  14. If you are seeing the message below just make sure msconfig is set up the way you want it to be and then you can check the "don't show this message" box in the lower left corner and the message won't appear anymore. It's just a reminder that you made changes to msconfig. Any time you hit Apply or OK in msconfig it will generate this message even if you didn't make any changes. If you don't make changes you can hit Cancel and the message won't come up when you reboot. NOTE: If you ever need to make changes to a Windows service such as Automatic Updates it's better to do that by going to Start>Run> type in "services.msc" [without the quotes] and then click OK than to do it in mscong.
  15. The link below is to an article where the author presents his ideas of what Windows could be like {actually what he thinks it should be like] in the next major version after Vista. Personally, I didn't like a lot of the ideas he presented such as: "Microsoft is considering more radical changes to its Windows business model. A patent application filed by the company in July describes how an Internet service provider could offer free PCs to consumers in exchange for ads targeted to users' profiles, including their language, music preferences, and whether they play PC games. The application also proposes an ad-subsidized operating system, in which users could choose to license the software without ads, pay a reduced subscription license for limited ads, or receive a free version in exchange for viewing many ads." I don't like ads of any kind and it seems anytime a person agrees to view directed advertising they are also agreeing to give up some privacy. Pay-per-click advertising is a new incentive for malware authors that is mentioned in the article linked to in Humpty's post about Zcodec. There are already a lot of companies and people that are trying to convince, trick, or force us into viewing advertisements. But this is what I really hope never comes to pass: "WinFS, the file system dropped from Vista, could surface in releases of Office, letting users store files on servers running Microsoft's SharePoint and SQL Server products. Users could then search a Web site for their files instead of navigating through folders. "It's information at your fingertips, but it's a Web app," Huckaby says." Since I've never heard of anyone complaining that they have too many of their own files on their own PC there must be reasons other than our convenience for why they want to store our files on their computers instead of ours. Upgrading servers and storage facilities to handle that kind of volume and traffic isn't cheap. Any opinions? InformationWeek
  16. Don't worry, it will get figured out. Computers can be very frustrating sometimes. I don't think that file is causing you any problems other than refusing to go away. Tony or one of the other people will let you know what to do. They have helped me on more occasions than I can even remember. I'm sure you'll get an answer before too long !
  17. Dude! I actually Googled Common Sense? thinking it was a security app I had never heard of . I had a good laugh when I remembered that you trademarked good ol' common sense a while back. At least At least that explains why I don't have it and probably never will . That was really funny. Thanks for the laugh! Firefox SpyBot [scanning and immunization] SpywareBlaster Windows Defender Zone Alarm Free Online Scans from Ewido, Housecall 6.5, Kaspersky, etc.
  18. Hi again Pam . Tony is one of the experts I was talking about. He's not on the forum right now but maybe I can help a little with one of your questions. "Too many parameters" often can mean that the command wasn't typed in properly. They have to be exact for the computer to recognize them. When you type them in some common mistakes can be a space in the wrong place or not typed in, mispellings, etc. Make sure you type in each command seperately and hit enter after each one. A pretty common mistake is typing in "/" instead of "\" The "\" is under the Backspace button on my keyboard. This is what should happen when you type in the commands: When you type "cd\" you should see only C:\ >_ [the underline will be flashing on and off]. When you type "deltree recycled" you may or may not see anything happen but after a very short time you should again see C:\ >_ I don't have Win98 anymore so I can't remember for sure but if I remember correctly if you type "exit" the computer reboots and if you type "win" it starts Windows without rebooting. If it still doesn't work or you're not entirely comfortable doing it I'm sure Tony or one of the others will be glad to help some more. I just noticed Tony is back on the forum so he should be able to help you.
  19. I've heard of people using the expression "those words left a bad taste in my mouth" meaning they heard someone say something that offended them or made them angry. But for some people it's more than just an expression. They actually taste all kinds of different words and each word has it's own flavor. That's just one example of how synesthesia can cause a person's senses to work in very strange combinations. Synesthesia
  20. What is Google thinking? I think one of the reasons people like Google is because Google seems to respect the privacy of its users. An example is their refusal to turn over records of people's searches to the government. But lately it appears to me that they are trying to come up with a lot of different ways to violate it. Google can also track the music you listen to on your PC but you have to choose to use it. However, of you choose that option you automatically enable Personalized Search which tracks a lot more than just music. If people don't follow the read more link before using the share music option it looks like they won't be informed of that. In my opinion allowing anyone or anything to collect or use personal information or to access anything on your PC for any reason should be strictly voluntary.
  21. Hi Pam and welcome to the forum ! I'm not one of the forum experts but I can give you some generic advice that may help answer your question or at least make sure that you do not have a serious issue causing the problem. I did a Google search for DC382 and there were no useful results but one for DC382 system folder brings up references to spyware. That may not mean anything since it's a very general type of search but a good place to start looking for answers might be to post a HijackThis file. That will give the experts in the Spyware Hell-HijackThis Log Analysis forum a basic look at your computer and often indicates if there is spyware or other issues on your PC. You can look at this HijackThis Guide which will give you step by step instructions on how to use HijackThis and how to post a log for them to look at. Depending on what they find they will recommend steps to fix any issues that are found or ask you for more info to fix or explain your specific issue. Again, welcome to the forum and sorry it took a little while for your question to be answered.
  22. That sure sounded like an easy question. The answer was kind of hard to find for some reason. Maybe everybody already knows the answer except for you and me . Then again I've never heard anyone mention 2 disks in a hard drive or seen a picture of one that has 2 disks. I wasn't doing too well searching for "2 disks inside hard drive." Then I thought of searching for "2 platters inside hard drive." I figured if a hard drive could have 2 platters it could have 2 disks. Turns out platter and disk mean the same thing. So yes there can be two or more disks in a hard drive. I like how you guys are coming up with new uses far an old hard drive like a mirror, Frisbee, various forms of weaponry, etc. Kind of like a Swiss Army Knife of computer hardware, lol. This guy came up with a pretty cool idea.
  23. That's how sfc /scannow behaves but the sneaky thing about it is you have to reboot after it finishes running for the changes to take effect. I say sneaky because it doesn't tell you that! Thanks to krit86lr for pointing that out awhile ago. Anyway, when you reboot you will probably get a "Please Wait" screen while the changes are implemented. That's what it does on my PC [XP SP2] and I just ran sfc /scannow a little while ago.
