  1. - I am not surprised. According to my info (no, I don't have a weblink. I saw this story in a TV program) once I go online and visit a webpage with ads, some personal data is collected and are sold to the highest bidder. And that bidding & selling seems to be occurring in REAL TIME. So, the highest bidder is allowed to send me one or more ads. And then there won't be time to anonymize the data. surprise, surprise.

  2. - No there's no overlap. Each file contains the language strings for one specific language for Speccy, Defraggler, Ccleaner.

    - If you want to use a different language thatn english, try this:  Move all files to another folder. And copy those files one by one back to the Original folder and restart the program to see which languages are extra available.

  3. - These *.sys files are needed for the OS to work properly. They act as a cache for the OS. You can get rid of (some of) them (GOOGLE it) but then your system will slow down, especially when you've got not too much memory. So, I am not recommending to get rid of them.

  4. - I have two GOOD reasons why I prefer IE (11) over Firefox and use FF as little as possible.

    - But I have one question: Has FF been improved when it comes to memory usage ? I've heard that FF was "very reluctant" when it comes to releasing memory (especially with add-ons). Even CLEANMEM wasn't able to convince FF to release memory. Has that behaviour improved in the last several years ? Does anyone know ?

  5. - Another language related bug in CC (v5.23).

    - Run the CC set up program. Change the language to dutch, select "Aanpassen" (= "Customize"). A new screen will open and then this (language) bug shows up. Instead of the dutch word "Verder" an english word ("More") shows up in the GUI.

    - I changed the language from english to dutch, italian, russian, spanish, french and german but in all cases this (english) word ("More") kept popping up. And that clearly suggests that this word is overlooked when it comes to "translating" the text strings.

  6. - Seems MS simply copied what others have recommended.

    - Based on my own experience, installing the "Convenience Roll Up" update is a good solution when one installs Win 7 from scratch. But NOT when one already has installed A LOT OF updates.

    - Will this be the final fix ? What if Windows Update breaks again as a result of new updates and new software (think: .NET). Because then WU will "complain" that the updates mentioned already have been installed.

No, I am NOT (too) impressed (for the time being).

  7. When I installed WL 2012 about 2 weeks ago.(I want to try a few parts of the suite (e.g. "MS OneDrive")) some odd things started to happen. Suddenly I was offered updates (both "Security" & "Optional") for:

    - MS Works 2003 XP. (This suite still works fine on my Win 7 system).

    - MS PowerPoint Viewer 2010 & Office 2010 although I don't use Office 2010, only PowerPoint Viewer 2010. (Why didn't offer MS any updates for PowerPoint Viewer earlier ?)

    - MS Security Essentials (in spite of disabling the Service called "WinDefend"). Using the word in "Security" in combination with "Essentials" creates a lot of confusion. The word "Essentials" suggests that it's part of Windows Live Essentials and MSSE is not.

    - Skype.

(MS bought Skype in 2011: https://www.wired.com/2011/05/microsoft-buys-skype-2/)

    Odd, very odd.

  8. - That article (See post #17) contains an interesting piece of text:

"Microsoft’s been working on the mechanics of the patching process for the past few months. You might not have noticed, but Microsoft already has support pages with the details for Win7 and for Win8.1.

Win7 and 8.1 patching has already started morphing. So far we’ve seen three Windows 7 nonsecurity update rollups -- KB 3172605 in July, KB 3179573 in August, and KB 3185278 in September -- that first appeared as Optional/unchecked patches, then were later updated to Recommended patches. As I explained a couple of weeks ago: “the general pattern is to have a cumulative update (er, patch rollup) released as Optional, wait a month to see if anything explodes, and if not, then change it to Recommended the next month.""

  9. - Did a little more digging with GOOGLE and here are a number of related articles:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13785/windows-essentials-2012-release-notes

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17779/download-windows-Essentials

(This article mentions the january 2017 date)

    http://www.ghacks.net/2016/05/06/windows-live-mail-2012-end-of-outlook-support/

For those who want read the "MS support" articles in their own language, one can change the language. E.g. for the german version change in this part of the URL from "/en-us/" to "/de-de/".

    - I usually prefer the US ("/en-us/") or UK ("/en-uk/") english version over the dutch version ("/nl-nl/"). Because MS uses a automated translation process for these webpages. And then the dutch translation ranges from odd to (sometimes) outright unreadable.

  10. - Starting after january 2017 MS will drop support for Windows Live Mail.

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2016/jun/02/microsoft-killing-windows-live-mail-what-should-i-do-hotmail-msn-outlook

    - Does anyone still use this software ?

    - I have been using the email program for a while but after say 6 months I ditched it. It was a bit of a rush job. There still some flaws in the programcode that made a mess of the file & folder structure. As time went by the amount of (sub-)folders increased. It became an outright horrible "folder jungle". And I believe that this "folder jungle" caused me to lose my stored emails. They were suddenly invisible in the program itself. Although I was able to save/rescue those emails. But it took me hours to recover those emails.

    - I am still missing Outlook Express. (sob, sob). Anyone who knows if OE would run on a Win 7 system ? And is OE still to be downloaded somewhere ? From a SAFE website ? Did some GOOGLE-ing but found nothing I thought I could trust.
