  1.  @MTA:  Oooops. Must eat some crow. There're 3 HDDs. Well, I took another look at the data and I saw the following:

    - The Toshiba ATA (SATA ???) drive generates the "Warning" message. SMART attributes &05 (a nasty one) & &C4 are no longer at zero. Hence the warning.

    - The WD has some minor issues. &C5 & &C6 are at 1 currently. Not enough to generate a "Warning".

    - The Seagate has also some minor issues. There &C5, &C6 & &BC are no longer at zero. Also not enough to generate a "Warning" (yet ??).

    - Another suggestion: Install PcWinTech's CLEANMEM. It will keep memory usage (much) lower.

  2. - I thought Defraggler would show which of those SMART attributes have a too high a value (and like GSmartControl) show those lines in a different color (developers ???).

    - The word "Reallocated" means that there was one or more weak spots and that those spots won't be used anymore in the future. But then the read/write head needs to move to a different spot on the HD to read/write those newly allocated disk-blocks.

    - Run "HD Tune". That program can scan the surface of your HD and tell where the damaged spots are. If those bad spots are at the beginning of the HD then I wouldn't wait too long. I haven't got the fainstest clue how much time it will take before the HD finally "dies". But I personally wouldn't take any chances.

  3. - Ooops. My reply was a little late. I noticed that you already made screenshot

    - Indeed, I also expected, that tab to have some coloring of the "out of bounds" SMART value(s).

    - Well, now the developers have some more work "on their plate". Developers ???

  4. - Windows 7 contains a "Snipping Tool". Not perfect but good enough to make a screenshot. I have pinned it to the Task Bar.

    - Select "Start", type "SnippingTool" in the search box and hit "Enter"

    - My system provides the following picture of the Defraggler's "Health" tab (but I have no HDD problems). See the picture attached.

    @Piriform's developers:

In SPECCY the SMART values are displayed in HEX(-adecimal) but in Defraggler those same SMART values are displayed in decimal only. Very confusing. I think the developers should be consistent. For a next version of both programs, change the way those SMART values are being displayed and select one of the following 3 options for BOTH programs:

    - Show the SMART values in both HEX and Decimal numbers. (My personal favourite)

    - Show the SMART values in HEX only in both programs.

    - Show the SMART values in Decimal only in both programs.

  5. - Sometimes there's a "bad apple" in a production serie. I had a drive with some weak spots in the middle of the drive and when the HD got filled at some point errors showed up. But SPECCY didn't show any errors. Odd, very odd. I have my current HDD for a few years, with no problems at all. Sometimes one has to be "lucky".

    - I run Piriform's Defraggler every day to keep files as much as possible defragmented and to move non-system files towards the end of the drive. I - at least - assume that this will reduce the strain on the HDD and increase the life span.

  6. - Thank you. Your HDD is (in the 1st stages of) failing. Hence the "Warning". Is your system slower than usual ? Do errors regularly show up in Windows ?

    - A very good guide to provide guidance for the SMART values is here:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

    - SMART attributes &C6, &C5, &BB and as a result of those three "Command Time Out" (&BC) is also no longer at zero. That means that GSmartcontrol should also show a few pink/red(-ish) lines. (The numbers from GSmartcontrol are a bit confusing).

    - Please run Piriform's Defraggler and make a screenshot of the entire "Health" tab as well. My HDD is OK, so I am not sure how these disk-faults would show up in Defraggler.

    - The usual recipe: Backup your HD, replace it & re-install Windows. (You should be backing up every now & then anyway)

    - Keep us posted.

  7. - When SPECCY shows the message "Warning" then something is definitely WRONG !!!!!!!!!!

Run SPECCY again. Select "File", "Publish snapshot" and post the weblink that pops up in your next reply.

There're 2 programs that can tell us more.

    - Run GSmartcontrol ans tell us how many red(-ish)/pink(-ish) lines (except for "Temperature") show up in the "Attributes" tab. (post a screenshot ??). That will tell us more.

    http://gsmartcontrol.sourceforge.net/home/index.php/

    - Piriform's DEFRAGGLER also has a "Health" tab that shows similar info. Post a screenshot as well.

(My HDD never had any problems. So, I don't if this program if & how this program would flag any SMART problems)

    - Keep us posted.

  8. - The program code for CCleaner PRO (from the PRO Plus suite) can be improved. To be able to use the programs the user must enter the license key. The annoying thing is that for say 2 or 3 days (can't remember the precise amount) the license key window kept popping up for say 10 seconds before disappearing again.

This exposes a flaw in the program code:

    - The checking for the (existence of the) license key should be done BEFORE the program code actually lets that window show up.

The Piriform developers should also check the following:

    - Is the license key window popping up at the right moment ? As far as I remembered, the main CC GUI showed up before the license key window popped up.

(The story above also applies to the other parts of the Professional PLUS suite).

  9. Several thoughts regarding OE Classic:

    - Buyers of the PRO version are allowed to preview & test the new Beta versions.

    - When the new Beta version is considered to be stable (enough) then a new free version will be released.

    - OE Classic stores - like Thunderbird - the emails in a separate part of the "c:\users" folders, making it comparatively easy to back up the emails. (Zip them up & copy) In that regard Windows Live Email was a nightmare.

    - I still like OEC's GUI better than Thunderbird's one.

    - Although the program still has some small to minor GUI problems the program runs well and the GUI is good.

    - For the time being I can live without IMAP support.

    - Users can subscribe to the free OE Classic newsletter.

    - OE Classic uses parts of Internet Explorer ( and Edge ??)

Conclusion: I am not going back to Thunderbird. I think OE Classic can become a serious competitor for Thunderbird.

  10. - For those who want to follow the development of Outlook Classic:

    https://www.oeclassic.com/news

    - The weblog post of October 2016 mentions that the developers are already busy testing & tweaking OEC's support for IMAP.

    - Have been "torturing" the program now for a while. And, of course, I already did find a bunch of things that can & will be improved in one of the next versions. But these bugs were predoninantly issues with how the GUI "behaves".

  11. - Since when has Homeland Security an interest in protecting people from using unsafe computer equipment ? I have heard stories where the US "Security Services" has knowledge of vulnerabilities in computer equipment and in spite of that they didn't report it to anyone but used those weak spots to their own advantage. (Think: Snooping, to use a relatively friendly term.)

  12. - Another odd thing in DF.

Assuming that I have 2 fragmented files (File001 & File002). Let's assume that DF defragments File001 first and then File002. When DF is busy processing File002 then DF will report that it's still busy defragmenting File001. To be fixed in the next version !!!

(I DO hope there'll be a new version of DF issued in the (near ??) future. I have given enough reasons why a new version of DF is justified)

  13. - Final thought: I personally would put the NTLite folks under A LOT OF pressure to change the location where that image, made by NTLite, is stored. Keep pressuring them until they have the changed that (default) location. Don't let them get away with the excuse "We never had this problem before". Because it has caused this problem NOW.

(I know one program that also would delete that file in that location)

  14. - Adding support for IMAP is now "Top Priority" for the developers of OE Classic (OEC).

    - The program still contains a number of small and (somewhat) larger bugs. E.g  in the GUI. Post #8 in this thread gives a clue of what kind of bugs the developers have to deal with. Anyone who is interested in helping the developers to get rid of these bugs is very welcome to "join the gang".

    - Like the old OE, OEC uses a number of thing from IE. So, IE is required to be present on one's system.

    - Windows XP came with a number of programs I still use on my Win 7 system. E.g. MS Works 2003 and MS Photo Editor (found a stand alone version on the internet). And now OE has joined the gang of those old programs. And OEC is - for the time being - & in - at least - one regard better than Thunderbird.
