  1. Hey Friends,

    Nothing like a good discussion about a very important topic for all users.

    My thoughts are due to a lot of reading and evaluation also.

    LEVEL #1 For the AVERAGE PC USER

    Disk Defragmenter is the best things going for most average users.MS put a lot of thought and experience in developing and honing this product.It does the best job that can be done for the average PC user.It rarely needs any updates or fixes.If so this is done during MS updating.No muss,no fuss for the average user.May it always stay that way.

    It takes into consideration the users preferences and processing history and "defrags" and optimizes based on the information that Windows has accumulated during the history of the computers use.Most users leave Prefetch and User Assist History alone.That is to their benefit.There are other areas that keep historical data also but I won't go there.Average users don't need to go there either.

    This explains the "slowness" of MS defrag.In reality most users don't need to defrag that often.That is why I advise average users to only defrag when Disk Defragmenter agrees that they need to do so.If it tells them it doesn't need defragmenting it is because of Windows disk optimisation considerations.

    It is that plain and simple.If you do keep defragging it is detrimental to your computers performance in the short term.In the long term Windows will eventually sort it out.However it can be a very long term.

    The average user is best off using Windows defaults,leaving Windows special files alone and let it do it's thing.Users have the option to Analyze(always recommended by me),View a Report, Defrag or Cancel.

    LEVEL #2 For the SLIGHTLY ADVANCED USER

    Piriform DEFRAGGLER is the type of defrag program needed by those with more specialized needs and more advanced knowledge of the PC.It is small, fast and easy to use but requires a little more knowledge to take advantage of it's various options.It is still evolving in it's development.

    This best things that can be said for Defraggler can be found "searching" Piriform forums.Especially Posts and Replies by those who have used many different "defrag" products.

    LEVEL #3 For the MORE ADVANCED USER

    These defragment programs fill the needs of those with very specialized needs.They also tend to include more advanced disk optimization stategies.This includes those users with complex systems and/or large volumes of data.

    Some of these products are free.Some free products out perform commercial products.

    Arguments can be made for the use or non-use of each.It really depends on the users needs.

    Personally I am LEVEL #1 user most of the time,Level #2 user some of the time,and Level #3 user rarely.

    What level Degragger are you?

    Best Regards,

    :) davey

    Hi Davey

    Can you please elaborate on the "over disk defragmenting issue" ? I did not understand why it is detrimental to the computer. To a novice like me it appeared to be ,that the more files are fragmented ,the slower the computer runs... :blink:

    Thanks

    Eli

  2. Both are very good products and even though I haven't tried SafeSpace there are good reports on it over at a security forum I hang around at.

    With either product you just need a bit of time to get used to how they work to realise the benefits and security sandboxes provide.

    The only thing stopping me from trying out SafeSpace is that it requires net framework which isn't installed here and I'm quite happy with Sandboxie.

    Thank you for your reply . EP

  3. Thanks, Anthony, for the info.

    Hi to you all !

    Sorry to intervene in your thread but does any of guys know how is the "safe space" parallel product ,as compared to sandboxie?

    Thanks . EP

  4. Eli,

    You are a valuable member of this forum,this cyberspace community.

    Why? Because you ask such important questions.

    Question # 1 answer is always Yes and No.Even MS has a disclaimer about changing the Registry.

    There is always the risk of something unforseen happening.The question is how experienced are you at recovering from a problem that occurs.

    There is no rush to use the Registry function for most users. Especially when your computer is running OK. Users that do a lot of testing and uninstalling and using certain types of software need to clean up their Registry and fix it often manually.These are the "techies" or "heavy duty P.C. users" that know the risks and for them it is normal to have to do special recovery methods.The average P.C. user does not need to do this and in many cases can't recover properly when things go wrong.

    Keep reading the various threads when you have the time and learn a little at a time.

    Of course I'll refer you to some of the replies I have made to other users.

    Have fun with your computer and be happy.

    "Take your time and enjoy yourself."

    Here is a little lesson that will help you in your "searches" of the forum and help answer your question #2.You may already know some of this but it also helps others to learn a liitle bit more.

    First a little trick I learned myself.Click on the GOLD STAR on the left above this window.

    Now click on the word History that appears below it.This is a list of all the webpages you have visited since you last deleted your browsing history.

    (Click on the GOLDS STAR again after you do the next step and click on any Piriform icon(the Pear).

    I am telling you this now because this window will disappear and a New Tab window will open.)

    Click on that little empty Tab right above this window.It will say "New Tab" when you put your "pointer" over it.Don't forget when the New Tab opens Click on the GOLD STAR and click on any Piriform icon.This will open a new tab and you will be able to switch back and forth between this window and the new window. Click on the old tab and then the new tab.Back and forth you can change windows.

    Now you can read the instructions in one window and perform them in the other window.(Wish someone taught me this trick when I was trying to follow their instructions.) Yes I have a printer but some users don't.Anyways it is good lesson for many new users.

    Don't forget you will be switching back and forth between tabs.

    I am using the new tab right now to find a link that I want to give you.

    At the top of every members forum window is a "Search" button or word Search.

    Click on that and you get a little search box.In that box it says "More search options".Click on that.

    This takes you to a more detailed "Search Options" window.At the bottom of this window there is a button labeled "More options" Click on that button.

    Congratulations you are now at the forums most advanced search window.Bookmark or click on the GOLD STAR WITH THE GREEN PLUS SIGN and Add to Favorites.(Do both and you will be able to use any PC to link to your favorite websites.I like redundancy for certain things.)

    IF you got lost along the way don't feel bad.Stuff happens and we learn from our mistakes.

    This is the link for one of my favorite forum tools.The Search Engine !!!

    You got here the hard way or the easy way.Either way you have learned something,that is the value of the Bookmark or Favorites or both.Never depend on Recently Typed URLs to be around.Thats when they disappear.

    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ode=adv&f=0

    Bookmark it , Add it to Favorites or both.

    Are we having fun yet? :lol:

    Now type in "phone book" including the quotes in the Search By Keywords box.You can also click on Advanced Usage Help to see search examples.

    Type in my member name "davey" without the quotes in the Filter by Member Name (optional) box.

    (This will narrow the search to only my posts.)

    Remember I am switching back and forth between Tabs just as you are.

    Down at the bottom right you will find Result Type Show results as topics or Show results as posts.

    Click on Show results as posts (This is important). Now click on the "Perform the search".

    You are now looking at one of my posts and it contains the phrase "phone book".As of now it is the only post I have containing this phrase.Notice at the bottom it says Post Preview: #99057 .Click on the post number and you can review the whole thread.

    Use the Back arrow to bring you back to the Search results list.(You must Double-click sometimes to do this)

    You can review many posts this way and they relate to your "search keywords" or phrases and list in a way that is useful.

    For those who got lost or don't have the Search feature the link follows.

    Now have fun and learn faster and easier with your new forum tool!!!

    Davey hi !!!

    I`m very thankful for your very professional supportive response and the new tools I have got now to satisfy my endless curiosity ... E.p :P

  5. Thank you for your reply ,but please see my questions again I somehow fail to see your answer to these:

    "Assuming that before I use registry cleaning ,I back up . With some of the issues I`m familiar ,with the most I`m not . I`m quite unease to mess up with the registry.....

    Questions:

    1) It will take an humongous amount of time to get to know every single issue .

    If that is the case ,is CCleaner safe enough to be trusted not to do any harm to the system functions ?

    2) How important it is to take some risk and clean the registry if the system is working properly ?

    (I`m not a heavy duty P.C user) "

    Thanks again P.E

  6. Hi

  7. OK! Lesson time. Are we having fun yet?

    Navigate to your C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder .Double click on the winapp2.ini file and Notepad

    will open it for your viewing enjoyment.

    Now left click on Edit in the toolbar at the top left of the Notepad window.

    Select Find in the drop down list and click on that.

    Having fun yet? Good.

    Now type in spyware doctor and click on "Find next" button.

    Down at the left of the Notepad window you will see highlihted "Spyware Doctor"

    These lines of data show what you want CCleaner to look for Log type files for Spyware Doctor and clean them.

    Lesson over except for one important thing.To exit Notepad click on the RED X upper right of the window.Same with the Find window.If you get any message to save changes REPLY NO.

    You just want look at the winapp2.ini file,not change it.At least not until next lesson.Whenever.

    Lesson over.

    Yes, Firefox may very well be clearing or not even saving a Log file.Bet you get an answer from a Firefox/Spyware Doctor user real soon.

    Good Luck,

    :) davey

    Thank you very much for your interesting reply and this is what i got :

    [*Spyware Doctor]

    LangSecRef=3024

    Detect=HKCU\Software\PCTools\Spyware Doctor

    Default=True

    FileKey1=%ProgramFiles%\Spyware Doctor\Log|*.*

    I do not see how to proceed from here since I understand it supposes to clean the log file ,which as I previously mentioned ,shows as empty. :unsure:

  8. Hello Eli,

    I don't use Spy ware Doctor but maybe my questions can help.

    Does the info in the winapp2.ini match your computer?

    Are there options in spyware doctor to produce Log type files or not produce these type of files.?

    Do you have any Log files in the %ProgramFiles%\Spyware Doctor folder?

    Good Luck,

    :) davey

    Thanks for your reply.

    1.I dont know how how to see if winapp ini 2,maches my computer.

    2.There are log and tmp files in s.d file and these are empty, also have history file with 50 kb in it.

    3.Could it be that the firefox cleans s.d ,and that is why I may never see anything

    related to it ? (My firefox is progammed to clean at shut down)

    I shall apreciate further 'enlightment' on this one,thank you very much. :blink:

  9. From Bold Fortune's slimming XP guide with system file protection needing to be disabled to delete the xerox folder residing in C:\Program Files.

    Bold's Guide

    Ask Leo

    Thank you very much !!!!!! You people just don`t let me be to much in question......keep up the good work . :lol:

  10. I have a file named xerox (in c) which shows to be empty though in use . Inside this file ,there is a file named : nwwia

    Can any body solve the mystery and tell me what is it ? (I had it ,virus and spy ware scanned with no result ) Thank you . :blink:

  11. It work good with spybot S&D you can work it in spybot s & d but other spyware may change it wait spyware & anti-vires do you have so on Protection max is Spybot S&D & SpywareBlaster or one is the max not work well with some Protection as not work same way. :rolleyes::unsure:

    Sorry , I`m not sure I understood what you said . Do u mean that one of the two spywares should be reduced on protection so the do not clash ? :unsure:

  12. You didn't by chance install the newest version over a previously installed version did you? If so you should do what's recommended via the SpywareBlaster knowledge base article and do a clean install of SpywareBlaster as detailed here.

    You could use Disable All Protection, then hit Enable All Protection.

    Other than that I can think of:

    • Perhaps you need to be logged in as the Admin if you already aren't.

    • If you're using Spybot-S&D perhaps it's Immunization is doing something to conflict.

    • Maybe a registry permissions problem which Dial-a-fix (link in my sig) may be able to fix.

    Well , it is related to the spy ware doctor anti spy immunization .I checked by pressing the immunization button off and on ,and every time it made changes in the spy ware blaster as described before . In view of the fact that the two anti spy clash in that matter ,then what should I do ? Thank you. :unsure: :

  13. I have the spy ware bluster and it disables 14 explorer protections by itself ! I surf the Internet with FireFox and use IE add on to apply with sites not well fetched by the fox. I have to enable this automatically disabled protections again and again.....Does anybody have any clue as to why it happens and what can I do stop this ?

  14. Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. I may have confused the situation by answering your questions in reverse order.

    What I meant is that from the whole list of files you mentioned, I understand that the ones I should be considered with , are reg keys : 10 ,19 , 20 ,21 and that the others in your list , shouldn't produce any problems if cleaned , so the decision to check or uncheck will be upon this four reg keys only,right ?

  15. In Office 2003:

    FileKey1=%appdata%\Microsoft\Office\Recent|*.*

    RegKey1=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Recent Files

    RegKey2=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open Find\Microsoft Office Word\Settings\Save As\File Name MRU

    Regkey3=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\PowerPoint\Recent File List

    Regkey4=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Publisher\Recent File List

    Regkey5=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\InfoPath\Recent File List

    RegKey6=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Internet\Server Cache

    RegKey7=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Internet|UseRWHlinkNavigation

    RegKey8=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSPaper 11.0\Persist File Name

    RegKey9=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSPaper 11.0\Recent File List

    RegKey10=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data|Settings

    RegKey11=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile1

    RegKey12=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile2

    RegKey13=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile3

    RegKey14=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile4

    RegKey15=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile5

    RegKey16=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile6

    RegKey17=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile7

    RegKey18=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Application|LastFile8

    RegKey19=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Contact|QuickFindMRU

    RegKey20=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Contact|StripSearchMRU

    RegKey21=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Preferences|LocationMRU

    To check other versions, just open the CCleaner winapp.ini file. Do not edit it unless you really know what you are doing.

    The most common complaint is that clearing RegKey10=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data|Settings wipes a bunch of custom settings in Word. If you left everything at default, probably no problem. Also, some people don't like losing the Outlook dropdowns when the last 3 registry keys are wiped.

    Thank you very much for your detailed answer. Let me see if I got it right, from all listed files you supplied, I should consider the ones mentioned in your answer to my first question ,right ?

  16. The cleaner beginner`s guide shows as follows, quote:

    "Tip: I recommend having them all checked. Unless you are a business or use the documents a lot, I would uncheck the Office box under Applications."unquote

    1.Can anybody add an explanation as to why to uncheck?

    2.What does the cleaner delete in the office application?

    Thanking you in advance. Eli
