  1. Hi

Please advice if possible to delete the following processes from the start up list:

    1.NvCplDaemon RUNDLL32.EXE C:/WINDOWS/system32/NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

    2. SkyTel SkyTel.EXE

    3. NyMediaCenter RUNDAL32.EXE C:/WINDOWS/system32/NyMcTray.dll,NyTaskdarInit

I know what these processes are, I just don't know if it is OK for these not to start up with windows and it is not quite clear from sources I have checked.

I want to drop programs I do not need in the background, and that way to shorten boot time, by unticking these from start up.

I know these processes are essential but possibly be activated manually when needed, this is what I want to check up.

    Thanks

  2. Hi Eli. :)

I just did this experiment...it may answer your Q.

    1. Opened IE7 sandboxed with avast running.

    2. Went to the eicar test virus site: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

    - eicar files are not real virus files, but they trigger an antivirus alert.

    3. Tried to download the test virus files. Avast caught them, so they never downloaded into the sandbox.

    4. Turned off avast on access scanner. One really shouldn't do that, but I did anyway.

    5. Downloaded the eicar test files. They went into the sandbox, not the folder I sent'em to, of course.

    6. Turned avast back on.

    7. Scanned the sandbox with avast. avast found and removed the all the eicar test files, so they are no longer present in the sandbox.

So: avast prevented the download of a (not really) malicious file, and then removed it from the sandbox after it was downloaded anyway. Doesn't really mean that avast can be installed into a sandbox, don't know about that, but does mean that if a malicious file gets there, avast will find it just as it would at some other place on the hard drive.

You can use windows explorer to look at the sandbox; on this computer it is located at c:\sandbox and contains all the files and folders modified during a sandboxed session. You may need to have the "show hidden files and folders" option checked.

Also, I think the siren when avast finds something is nifty. :P

    HI

Thank you for your very thorough reply.

I forgot to post it ,but last week I was surfing sandboxed and guess what?...avast gave me the

awakening with it`s siren..., it detected a virus and didn't let in the sandbox just as you described in your test ,the only difference was that this virus was for real! :P

  3. Hi

I wish to know if any of you had good experience with Ultimate defrag program .

For those who use it, is it safe to let it work on: auto mode\optimum ?

    Thanks

  4. I dont *think* it will work. iirc the sandbox prevents drivers from installing.

But why do you want avast sandboxed anyways?

    Hi

I shall make myself clearer : My antivirus is avast, being the fact that it works off the browser, the question is if the antivirus is able to get in to the virtual environment to do it`s job .The question comes from the looking at the antivirus , as a second defence line in case the sandbox fails to delete all the "goodies".

    Thanks

  5. That pretty much answers your own question in a nutshell. ;)

I don't know what your surfing habits are, etc., so it's up to you if you need or don't need TeaTimer actively protecting your system and how many people share your system and what their surfing habits are. Although for me a 40 MB consumption would mean I'd turn it off, however you need to make your own decision.

I honestly don't think the IE BHO add-on that silently blocks bad pages is going to consume that much, and is more-or-less worth leaving installed because you never know when it will protect you when you're venturing in IE one day.

    Thank you again.

  6. Is this just when running it, or do you have the TeaTimer resident shield running.

It also has that IE BHO to silently block bad pages.

    Hi

    Thank you for your reply.

The 40 MB is when it is not running, only the tea timer is.

If my default browser is FireFox ,you think is there something to disable ? I do not need all the IE related protections ,except on rare occasions that sites are not well fetched by FF.

    Thanks

  7. I'd still let the ones that you feel you need run. Give me a moment and I'll fire up the VM and install avast.

    Edit:

Okay, I'm going to base this off my usage (if I used an anti-virus), obviously your uses will vary. :)

Instant Messaging - I uncheck all except gaim (which is Pidgin now). So that frees up a lot of checked items and thus you'll see some benefit.

Internet (Web based) Email - tend to leave alone, since it covers Gmail, Hotmail, etc.

Network - Good if you use a notebook or frequently connect to wireless LANs.

P2P - If I ever use anything, it was in the past and it would be uTorrent, so a lot to uncheck there. Just like IM Shield.

    Standard - I leave alone

Web Shield - I leave alone

Now if I install this on a clients machine per request, I leave everything at default. But unticking programs you don't use does help.

    Hi Tarum

The Internet Email provider does not scan web based mail !!! it does however scan incoming and outgoing e-mail messages processed by clients other than MS Outlook or Exchange, such as Outlook Express, Eudora etc.

  8. This programme has been a god send especially when having problems and have to send the tech support on some sites a pic of the problem. Also good for copying pictures to word /email etc etc...

I have found it does shrink down pics except when you post them into word.

As previously state has many uses and many I havent discovered yet.

it is located for download at

    http://www.zapgrab.net/

Tank you for the nice little program, I have something similar but works only with the internet browser.

Now I can work with it off the net.

    Best wishes

  9. I finally got hold of a help file for Avast and looked it over. From what I read there are two GUI. Simple interface and Enhanced. The Simple user Interface looks very basic. The Enhanced User Interface is only available in the paid version according to the help file. So how do you control the settings for the half dozen Shields in Avast? What if you want to turn some off or tweak them? Is it possible in the free version?

    Hi Anthony

You have full control of the shield settings in the simple interface(free version) +you can turn on/off any shield. All easily configured following the help file or intuitively.

    Good luck ;)

  10. Exactly what I have done!

Avast 4.8 Home Edition is what I have happily changed over to ;)

I did the same as well, a few days ago. I got fed up with AVg mixed up messages regarding 7.5 free edition product support. So...I moved over to avast 4.8, still studying the product .

  11. The media player looking default skin it has I have never liked and never will. However Avast does have the simple user interface that isn't skinned, and during installation you can even instruct it to use the simple user interface or change to it afterwards. It would be nice if they'd make a very nice standard looking Windows GUI for it though.

Well Andavary, they actually have a windows look alike interface ,see below at:

    http://www.avast.com/eng/skins.html

  12. I'm sure Avast is a fine program. I tried it about 6 months ago, took one look at the interface, said "Ewwww!" and uninstalled it. Sorry, the cutting-edge designs of 1994 just doesn't grab me, not even in a retro way. I don't think a serious av app should appear as a 1-inch thick blob of silver on my monitor.

    Hi Corona

You have got lots of skins to choose from, I`m sure one of these will suit you, if this is your only problem regarding this product. ;)

  13. Hi

Somehow I do not seem to get satisfying good answers from Avast forum(I guess I got used to the extraordinary good answers I get here in this forum.... )

    I`ll try my luck here:

In the web shield settings, exceptions in mime types to exclude:audio, image gif ,image/png,txt/css,video

all the above as I understand ,are there by default. Does this mean all files from this kind will not be scanned?

It is not clear why this exceptions are there to begin with, and what happens if I delete these ones ?Will it slow the system down because of the extra scanning?

3.What additional function adds the high sensitivity web shield to the normal? Does the high sensitivity slow down the computer or causes system extra load ?

    Thanking you in advance
