  1. Hi,

New to Defraggler, but have a question.

I have a 40 gig HD on an old Lenovo laptop and I analyzed the disk and Defraggler said it was 14% fragmented.

I did a quick defrag and it then showed 12% fragment. There were 5 fragmented files.

Is this normal behaviour? Would I have to do a full defrag to get to 0%? Quick defrag does not get to 0%?

The quick defrag was fairly fast and I'm using default settings and this is an XP SP3 system.

    Thank you.

  2. Have ccleaner version 4 and Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. I upgraded avast from version 7 to version 8 and in application column in ccleaner, it lists avast 6 and avast 8. I've cleaned both, but there are always 5 log files that come back in the avast 6 section.

    Can anyone explain?

I did an upgrade to avast 8, not a clean install (seems to be working fine) and I can't fine any reference to version 6 or 7 for that matter, unless I'm not looking in the right spot??

    Looking for answers, thanks.

  3. Again, no problem here on my two old XP systems (P4 1G and AMD 2000+ 2G)

Coming from AVG, they are much faster seeming. Can't comment on protection, but nothing has popped up so far. I'm careful where I surf, but would feel more comfortable with some sort of web guard.

I think it's very important to get rid of ALL previous AVs before installing.

    Just my $0.02 worth.

  4. Sorry for going briefly off-topic. Andavari, I seem to recall seeing a post from you a few months ago (?) stating you were trying out Panda AV Cloud Free. Did you decide you didn't like it? I've been pretty pleased with it thus far.

What do yoou like about Panda?

I must be a minority, but MSE works well for me in my two old low power systems.

I do have it set to only monitor incoming files.

I do miss a web guard though.

  5. Thanks for the info. I'd really like to use avast, but for some reason, the mouse freezes when starting a scan.

Vipre is touted as being resource friendly. It would be nice to have some input on that.

For me now, AVG is ok, but not the best.

  6. MSE seems "heavy" on XP because of its RAM usage but really it isn't a beast on RAM not even on XP:

The area where it's annoying on XP is when performing a full system scan, it's rather slow!

Pretty similar to the AVG I'm using (slightly less), but I don't have the mail scanner running, just resident shield and linkscanner.

  7. Vipre av on xp which I won in a competition. MSE on Win7.

    hazelnut,

How are you liking Vipre? Is it working ok for you? Comments?

I had been using avast, but suddenly it started to freeze my mouse when starting a scan, very mysterious. And it is avast , as AVG works perfectly, but it isn't my favorite. Avira works perfectly too, but with the new problems it has, I wouldn't even consider it.

So, basicly, I'm looking for a good AV for an older XP system, AMD 3000+, 2 gigs and I wouldn't mind paying for one, if it works well and doesn't slow me down.

    Thanks.

  8. I think so too. On "lightweight" sites, I don't see a difference between Opera, Firefox, or Chrome/Iron. However on resource-intensive sites like eBay for example, Opera uses less CPU and loads the page faster. Also with Opera, you can scroll smoothly as the page loads, whereas Firefox and Iron are jumpy for me as the page loads. It's for those reasons that I've stuck with Opera for so long.

Interesting observations. I'm liking FF4 more and more. I'm considering making it my default, FWIW.

Being a newb to FF4, I started with AdblockPlus, but discovered it really slowed things down. I found out about Adban and for me, it's much better, much faster. It also seemed to speed up loading of pages with ads, not so 'jumpy'?

But, I'm not really a power user.

    Just a thought.

  9. So far I'm really liking it a lot. It's making me consider switching from Opera actually.

I've tried the RC releases and like them, but Opera still feels slightly faster to me.

    XP Home SP3.

My only complaint about Opera is that the favicons don't always work, but I think for now, I'll keep Opera as default, but maybe not for long.

Strange though, I tried to update RC2 and it says it's up to date and version number is 4.

    Update history says RC2.

  10. As far as Avast is concerned, it isn't you. Avast gives me the generic icon both in the bookmark folder and setting a bookmark onto the address bar.

Avast is the arrowed icon. There may be a setting to change which would make it show up like other sites, but I'm not aware of it.

Whew! Well that gives me peace of mind, thank man! :D

  11. Yeah, strange alright. Opera 11.00 worked fine for me, only Opera 11.01 is giving me problems.

I'm almost ready to jump ship, but at least it isn't as bad as the early 10 versions. 10.63 is reliable and stable, but 11.0x is rippin' fast.

    UPDATE:

Well, I didn't want to, but I uninstalled Opera, deleted all Opera folders, and cleared the registry as best I could, then installed Opera 11.01 again.

All the icons work except for the two I was having problems with, mainly avast.com. It still has the generic icon.

Of course peeps at the avast forum say they see their icons, so....

It worked in srware iron though. I have uninstalled that however.

I guess I'll live with it. Who knows, it may just start working again. It's just a mystery why it showed at first then disappeared???

  12. More weird goings on with Opera 11.01 for me.

I launched it late last night and although it originally kept all bookmark favicons, this time they were completely stripped out. I was gonna post this info but something came up and I had log off.

When I fired up my PC later last night and launched Opera, they were all back again. Very strange.

For whatever reason, I think Opera just didn't pick up the "icons" folder and it's contents, which it later did. That's the only reason I can come up with.

Back with good old reliable 10.63 now.

  13. Weird, I haven't gotten this issue. o.O I do get my favicons cleared when I use CCleaner, but they reappear when I revisit that website.

    Thanks guys.

The main problem is, one site I had bookmarked, with the proper icon (favicon), I deleted and when I tried to bookmark it again, I get the generic icon (star).

New sites I bookmark show up properly. When I get the generic start on the bookmark, it also shows up on the tab.

    I've tried different skins too.

  14. You have to uncheck "website icons" in CCleaner or else they will be cleared. Just a thought.

    Thanks, but no go.

I'm pretty sure that it's an Opera problem.

The forum there is not too friendly to newbs though.

I may have to try that however.

  15. Question for the Opera users:

I recently did a fresh install of Opera 11.01. I started setting up my bookmarked pages and they all have the icons from their respective sites. Now, though I'm getting the generic (star) icon for some pages I bookmark. Any ideas?

I've tried clearing out history, cache, etc., but nothing seems to work.

I really don't want to do a fresh install. I tried a reinstall through add/remove programs, but that didn't help.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

  16. Newb question here.

I started using srware iron and chromium shows up in the applications list.

    It does not clean anything.

How do I get it to clean iron?

Is there an entry in winapp.ini or winapp2.ini file?

    Thank you.

  17. I've used Avast Home Edition with Windows XP firewall for about 4 years now.

I've tried a couple of things during that time, but none have lasted more than a few days. This combination just works on my computer.

I've used this combo too along with Opera and have been satisfied. I tend to like and keep things simple though. I've tried Avira free, but keep coming back to Avast as the program just seems to work better for me and is more user friendly, IMO.

Great support on their forum too.

It really comes down to what you're most comfortable with. No AV is 100%.
