  1. Yes. WWDC gives you an option to disable it. Make sure that SSDP service is also disabled.

Thanks for the advice I have disabled the UPnPHost service, but what is SSDP? I'd rather not take a guess.

    edit

Sorry found it. Abbreviations can be confusing, especially for me :)

  2. How does Snagit compare to Fastone Screen Capture and MW Snap which are the two I use now.

I didn't see your post earlier. I can only comment on sngit8 and the last free version of faststone.

I found both work equally as well, but snagit had more features and I could integrate it into my browser using a firefox extension. Snagit has a good range of picture editing gadgets at its disposal, allowing you to edit, crop, overlay text etc. Features that I would have to use paintshop pro to do otherwise.

I suppose you are paying for a little bit more refinment and class with snagit.

Having said all that I now use faststone, it does the job and I can easily launch it from the quick lauch short cut.

One minor point about faststone that effected firefox, but not IE. For some reason the default scroll refresh time was set too quick, and caused any text captured by scrolling window to distort. To solve this I set the scroll time to 300 milliseconds. Works fine now.

Another plus point to faststone is its size...just over 1mb for the portable version.

I would recommend both, I just went for the cheaper option ;)

  3. I currently got no wallpaper at all. I sometimes like it that way, and sometimes like to use wallpaper, if i find a nice one.

I know exactly what you mean, hence my rather late contribution to this thread. Heres one I found today. Its from an astronomy site.

It's an image of the volcano Tungurahua, located in Ecuador. In the background, above the volcano is the Pleiades star cluster.

    I love it.

  4. From the website

SnagIt version 7.2.5 is suitable for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (I have not tried it on Windows Vista).

Just to let potential Vista users know version 8 of snagit doesn't work properly with Vista, it is highly unlikely version 7.2.5 will either.

However, the last free version of Faststone capture does work well on Vista...

  5. Couldn't you just paste it into word/openoffice and save it as a .doc?

Interesting question which I have also wondered about. It is also an answer which I have never tried...

Unfortunately Word saves the image as an image, not as text as I assume Atnes mean't. Thus my image of a web page saves as a .doc file turns out like this, with a right click of the mouse to show its an image.

  6. Thats what I mean't, although it may not have sounded like it. I wasn't blaming CCleaner. I mean't firefox not shutting down properly could be the reason for CCleaner not doing its job..

If you have any ideas how to cure the Firefox problem, I'm all ears. :)

  7. On occasions, after all my firefox windows have been closed, I have to open the task manager, click on processes tab and click "end process" for the firefox entry. That is the only way I can get CCleaner to do its job..short of a reboot.

Sometimes it doesn't like giving up gracefully

  8. I use the Customize Google add-on (firefox)

I had that extension for a while untill some aspects of it suddenly stopped working. The option relating to Google images was the most obvious failure. I eventually unistalled as I had my doubts whether it was actually doing anything at all.

Unless you specifically have a Google account to change settings then Google is still logging your searches.

Trackmenot generally throws a spanner in the works:

I know some might think this is a waste of bandwidth, but filling the google logs with rubbish gives me a certain sense of satisfaction :) ...and I don't really care!

  9. I feel bad for the victims but this will give gun control idiots something to cry about.

Prehaps if the nutcase involved wasn't given the chance to arm himself in the first place this would never have happened. The Mutally Assured Destruction argument gets down to a personal level.

I guess the cultural divide on this subject wil never reach an amicable agreement.

  10. I use Firefox. Can anyone help me with this?

On this forum and many others, I get this message when I press the "log out" button.

Is there a about:config hack or any other way to get rid of this silly message. I could log out and log back in as much time as it takes to respond to this dumb question...

    Thanks

  11. Apart from my AV and spyware apps, I'm not really that bothered about updating the rest.

Before I switch off my PC at the end of the night, I run CCleaner and then go through my security programs one by one checking for updates. It takes about a minute, and is part of my "getting ready for bed" routine.

I always disable any auto update features. Call me paranoid, burt I hate applications just connecting at random (or otherwise) to the net without my explicit permission. Apart from anything else I might not want the update. No different than windows updates.

  12. Very nice Mr Brownstone :)

How did you change the colour of the right hand side of the start menu to green? It looks good, but I have never seen any options that allow you to do this.

Edit: I realise its probably Harmony by Vstyler  Still it would be nice to be able to control the colour without addons...

    Cheers

  13. Thanks Dennis

I knew about the first link already and will investigate the second.

Trouble is, I'm going through one of those very contented phases with my PC, where everything is working perfectly, and the need to try something new doesn't seem necessary. The "Why fix it when it ain't broken" point of view.

Give me a few weeks and I'm sure I'll find something I need to fix, or software that seems imperfect.

Meanwhile, your links are bookmarked ;)
