  1. The default settings, which has it check for IP address changes every five minutes. It will also check for updates at each startup, and logon.

If you want it to automatically start with Windows you have to manually enable that setting, it's not enabled by default.

What about some of the other boxes in Preferences?

Also, for some reason, when I enable the "Start when Windows Starts" box, that setting doesn't hold. Each time I reboot, it seems to clear that setting and the Updater doesn't load into my system tray. Do you have the same problem?

  2. It's only offered after you register an account on OpenDNS. ;)

The updater keeps dynamic ("changing") IP addresses up-to-date with your OpenDNS account. So when your IP address changes you won't lose any connectivity to OpenDNS as your DNS Server. All you need to do is install it when given the chance to download it, punch in your OpenDNS user name and password and it's a set it and forget it program. The only thing it creates on the hard disk is a programs files folder, and an application data folder for the settings, other than that it hardly installs anything however it needs about 9MB-10MB to be running all the time, it needs to run all the time to keep your IP address in sync.

Thanks for the info, Andavari. I hate to show my ingnorance, but you and DennisD have chosen to use OpenDNS. Why? What DNS server were you using prior to that change -- who provides it -- is it your ISP?

Obviously, we're all using something, I'm just trying to figure out who normally provides that and why you decided to change?

  3. I've just now started using OpenDNS, and I don't notice any speed differences at all. All the hiccups I have on pages are due to something in Firefox which has been an issue since version 2.

I even grabbed the OpenDNS Updater app, that will automatically check for updates for dynamic IP addresses, requires registration though to get it.

I'm thinking about trying OpenDNS myself, Andavari. Where did you find the Updater?

By the way, I was having the same problem with FF 3 (very annoying), so I actually went back to the latest version of FF2 -- much better!

  4. I'm using AntiVir 9 Premium with no effect on speed -- but I'm not using IE8. If you're also using FF3, that could be part of your problem -- at least it was for me. It was definitely a slow loader -- not 3 minutes -- but slow enough to cause me to go back to FF2. And now, I'm a happy camper once again :D.

  5. The image was uploaded to the forums as an attachment which automatically makes a thumbnail for large size images. Note that uploading images onto the forums also uses up your available MB that the forum will host for you, hence the reason to rely upon free image hosting sites.

Thanks, Andavari. What I really was interested in is what software was being used to put the arrows and comments on the thumbnail.

  6. Why do you prefer the Auslogic's software over this one?

I'm not answering for abu aufa, but they probably both do a pretty good job. However, the Auslogic version may provide a little more registry information for the user -- and it definitely has a much more attractive interface (GUI). Other than that, abu will have to respond for himself.

  7. However the majority of issues I have with stalling on any site is because of Firefox and nothing else but it's an issue I'll just deal with since it's my browser of choice.

I've had my fair share of this stalling and unresponsive mouse stuff (especially on this site) -- particularly since upgrading to Firefox 3.06 from 2.0.0.20 about a 10 days ago. Seems even worse when I run FF Sandboxed. Didn't really notice it much with FF 2.0.0.20 -- even Sandboxed.

  8. You can make a copy of the Sandboxie.ini file Tom, which you'll find in the "C,\Windows". Then replace the newly installed ini with your copy.

I can't see anything in my Sandboxie.ini that's version specific, so it should work OK.

    Thanks, Dennis.

  9. Not sure if you will be able to just reinstall an older version over the newer version but you definitely uninstall and reinstall the older version.

Obviously, that crossed my mind. The only problem is that I now have some things configured in Sandboxie that I'm not sure I would remember how to re-create.

  10. Since I updated to Sandboxie 3.34 a few days ago, for some reason, I've been experiencing quite a few FireFox 2 annoyances (incomplete page loads, longer than usual delays, freezing up, etc.). Not totally sure this is due to the update, but it sure seems like it could be. Maybe there's just some sort of incompatibility thing with my machine.

Is it possible to "downdate" to a previous version? I don't really recall having any of these problems with v 3.32. Just wondered if I could just try re-installing 3.32 over the top of 3.34?

  11. There are several software programs that have not been installed on my computer for years. However, I keep finding references to them every now and then -- even after running Ccleaner's Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic. Many of them even still show up in the Application section of CCleaner.

Is it safe to find the folders referencing these various programs under the "Software" section in RegEdit and simply delete them? If that's OK, I assume that deleting them will clean up the problem so that they're no longer found. Right?
