  1. Slowday . . . are you using AYRecovery?

Does it also have its own defrag system -- and a "suspend" feature like Rollback RX?

After doing some reading about this stuff, I was of the impression that the built-in defrags for these programs were more about defragging their snapshot tree images than about defragging your system hard drive. However, I'm not totally sure about this.

  2. The one downside I've found (which, of course, makes sense) is that once this rollback software is installed, you can't (or shouldn't) defrag your system any more. This seems to be true for all of these apps. However, RollBackRX has a suspend feature which allows you to use a third party defragger, but even that has a downside. You can read about it here.

  3. Tom I use this service for my backups with FD-ISR (original one) and it has never caused me any bother in the last 3 years.

It is set to automatic in services.

I currently have it set to Manual, which I believe is the default setting. However, I have also tried Automatic. Interestingly, it seems to respond about the same either way -- not much difference.

  4. Indeed, which is why I don't use any backup software that relies upon it to function since I don't know what mood VSC will be in. I use a batch file for backups and 7-Zip instead and haven't had any issues doing that for three years.

So, Andaravi, can I interpret your statement as this is not particularly unusual behavior for VSC? Thought maybe it was just something on my end. It doesn't happen all the time -- it's sporadic.

Your backup suggestion is a good one, but I use (and like a lot) Macrium Reflect, which uses VSC -- and also another program that backs up to an online server -- it also uses VSC. Seems like VSC is the "Service" of choice for these backup utilities. :D

  5. Go to Start > run and type services.msc

Make sure that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is set to automatic and started.

Now make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy service is set to manual and stoped (if it's running don't stop it, restart instead).

Exactly the way I have it set. For some reason, sometimes it just acts like it's not real stable.

  6. From time to time, I've noticed that my Volume Shadow Copy doesn't always activate when it should for a couple backup programs I use. After a reboot or two, it seems to "come alive" again, but that routine gets a little annoying. Any suggestions? Could there possibly be some settings that might need changing?

  7. I've used it with both Firefox and IE7 with no problems. However, I'm not using it now with Firefox because I'm using FF portable on my HD and Key Scramble won't install due to the fact that FF is not in it's normal program location. There's probably a workaround, but I just haven't had the time to fiddle with it.

  8. Yes, I did buy the Pro version. Because of the amount of e-mail I receive on a daily basis, it was worth the investment to me.

Regarding "previewing" the e-mail, I do that only occasionally anymore -- only if I'm absolutely not sure. MailWasher color codes the incoming mail, but I'm to a point where I can usually confirm the type of e-mail (spam or legit) just by quickly looking at the Subject line and/or the e-mail address of the sender. This approach is not fool-proof either, but it works for me. Like anything else, MailWasher is just a tool -- and I'm sure everyone comes up with a way of using the "tool" a little differently.

  9. I've used MailWasher Pro for several years -- wouldn't be without it!

I get tons of e-mail -- much of it legitimate -- but this helps me sort through the pile very quickly. It does have a "training" component to it, so you need to give it a little time to learn what's good and what's not. Like everything, it's not 100% accurate, but it's amazing how well it does.

  10. The thing I don't like about most third-party pdf viewers, is that many don't seem to render the pdf image as well -- or as accurately as Adobe. Obviously, that's not too much a problem for the casual pdf user, but if you're a pdf "power user," it does become a more significant factor.

And, by the way, you can also consider Adobe Reader Lite.

  11. Malwarebytes is different from AntiVirus software. It adds a nice extra layer of protection. A nice thing about MBAM, as we call it, is that you pay for the Pro version once then you have it for a life time. Avira AntiVir Premium does protect against AntiAdware/AntiSpyware, but MBAM will add an extra layer of protection.

Its up to you if you want both AntiVir and MBAM resident protection. You can always disable real-time protection in MBAM if you don't like it.

How is the resident version on resources?

  12. I use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Pro and AntiVir Personal together and have had no problems.

The free version is good if you already have a real-time protection app in place.

I might as well get another opinion . . . do you think Malwarebytes Pro is necessary with AntiVir Premium (resident)?

  13. The commercial version however has the advantage of having real-time protection to catch nasties that try to worm their way into your system when installing software with add-on garbage.

So, Andavari, are you saying you don't actually use the commercial version yourself -- or feel it's necessary?

  14. Real-time protection and scheduler for updates and scans.

Thanks, Hazel. Can you really run Malwarebytes resident concurrently with AntiVir Premium -- or could it cause some conflicts? Better yet, is it even necessary?? For some reason, I thought AntiVir included some malware detection stuff of it own.
