I however do not uninstall the software with the uninstall watcher itself in my case this would be Total Uninstall. Instead I use the traditional/original uninstaller supplied with the software title, and only then do I run Total Uninstall to remove the leftovers (I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly or not however I think that was a suggestion of the ZSoft Uninstaller developer once).
Andavari, could you comment on this a little further. Just wondering why you have chosen not to use the "analyzed" uninstall routine?

I think you've been scammed. CCleaner is freeware .

I did install the latest beta version of xp-AntiSpy and used it to disable ctfmon.exe. To confirm what you expected might be the case, it appears that it disabled it without having to go through the steps that CeeCee mentioned.

In simple terms, is a HOST file basically a block list of restricted sites?
-
My fault, Andavari. Guess I downloaded the last stable version (3.96) and not the newest beta. The prior version didn't even have a "Tweaks" section in it.
One other thing . . . will disabling cftmon.exe have any affect on the normal function of MS Office?
-
Edit: Updated the winapp2.ini cleaner to include CeeCee's information!
Doesn't ctfmon.exe basically re-create itself each time you reboot? I tried disabling it in my startup items, but it seems to keep coming back.

To get rid of it easier use the free xp-AntiSpy, look under Tweaks and tick Disable ctfmon.exe
Just took a look at xp-antispy, but didn't see "Tweaks" or where you could disable ctfmon.exe. Wonder if you have an older version and it's now been eliminated.

MVPS.org, and Spybot-S&D's via Spybot-S&D's Immunization feature.
Just read the info on the MVPS link you provided. Does installing, updating and maintaining a host file become a little complicated? It didn't really sound all that simple and straight forward. Just curious .

HOSTS file with over 33,000 blocked sites
I don't recommend everyone disable HOSTS file scanning, but in my case it's a totally unnecessary waste of time.
What HOSTS file do you use, Andavari?

I really know nothing about "host" files. Can someone give me a real simple 1-2-3 approach as to what they are and how they work.
Is hpHOSTS one of the better ones -- or are they all about the same -- just different?

Is there a better Firefox Download Manager than Firefox's own?
-
Actually, I use Burrrn all the time. This post was for informational purposes only.

Old version must be uninstalled first if deciding to try this new free version.
If I'm not mistaken, this "new" BurnAware Free now includes DAO (gapless) burning. The original free version did not.

Thanks, Humpty, I'll give these things a try.

Over the last few days I've started to experience some trouble downloading files in Firefox (2.0.0.16). Generally, the download starts and runs for a few seconds -- then just stalls. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm not using RegMech but Desktop Maestro
Andavari, is this the Desktop Maestro from PC Tools? What do you specifically like about that app?
-
It lists but doesn't touch unused file extensions, etc.
What harm is there in getting rid of unused file extensions. If needed, aren't they re-created anyway?
-
AntiVir for me.

That's why an exclusion needs to be made for those folder locations, i.e.;
c:\system volume information
How do you manually add this folder to Registry Mechanic? -- can't quite figure it out.

7z all the way!
Often thought about using 7z for backups, but never really figured out how to do it. Wish there was an actual "backup" component built into the GUI.

What type of firewall do you use?
Outpost Firewall Pro (commercial)

I've never used this program, but Double Safety is a backup program that Giveaway of the Day is offering today.

Thanks, Humpty, for the Rapid Share link.

Do you have to subscribe to their forum in order to download this fix?
Is there a free version of "Malwarebytes Antimalware"?

Yes, just download the full version and you can use it as is. Or, if you decide to purchase it, a few additional features will be unlocked.
