  1. Which firewall is the better one?

    1. Hardware is the best as it is in front of your system and usually included in the modem for high speed connections

    2. Software there are several software firewalls providing just about the same level of protection so it comes down to personal likes and dislikes

    3. Windows provides incoming protection only but is better than no firewall

Have a look in the topic about having a software firewall or not:

    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17348

Thanks, Kenny. I'm pretty much already aware of what you said, but I was hoping to get a specific comparison between the two software firewalls I mentioned.

  2. I'm not asking this for myself. Someone asked my opinion about something that I wasn't really sure of, but I said I'd try to find out a little more info.

Between these two, which provides better firewall protection . . . ZoneAlarm Free or Windows XP (built-in) firewall?

  3. Is this able to create a backup on a USB connected external Hard Drive, and then to restore that image ?

I have seen many reviews on various forums, but only one referred to a USB Hard Drive, and that said it could not be used.

    Regards

    Alan

Yes, I use Macrium and backup to a 320GB external USB harddrive. Hopefully, you're using USB 2.0 and not 1.1 (which would be very slow). Actually, this software is great. The commercial version (which I happen to have) also allows for standard selected folder/file backups in addition to imaging.

  4. Portable apps run best off a hard drive.

#2- Once you have the program extracted (if it needs to be) run it from your hard drive. Configure every single thing in it to suit your preferences. Close the program. It should now have your options saved to it's configuration file(s). Now you simply burn the programs folder to a CD using your preferred burning method. If you want the program to autorun when it's inserted into the drive, also burn a autorun.inf file to it. It should contain something like

    [autorun]

    open=progfolder\prog.exe

    That's pretty simple. Thanks, Talldog.

  5. You need to run the portable app from your HD or a thumb drive and make your settings then. Than burn the portable app to a CD/DVD if you plan on using it from a CD/DVD. If you were to put the portable app on a CD/DVD without doing that first you wouldn't be able to change any settings because you can't write to the CD/DVD you are running the portable app off of.

So, does this mean that you can also install and use a portable app on your HD?

Also, I'm a little embarrassed for not knowing this, but I've never used a portable program before. So, could someone give me a 1-2-3 on how I would go about preparing a CD version. I already have the program downloaded -- now what?

  6. When planning on using them on read-only media like CD/DVD you need to launch them first from your hard disk as that will allow for a configuration file to be created - if the portable app uses one.

Can you elaborate on this, Andavari?

  7. I have internal floppy and CD drives (in addition to my external harddrive). When I launch a number of my programs, they first query my A:\ (floppy) drive and I really don't understand why this happens. There really is no reason for it and it should be totally unnecessary. Could this be a bios (setting) issue -- or is it something else?

  8. The only thing I use is Cleanmem.

I didn't know you used this, Dennis. I've been using it ever since I became aware of it several months ago. I have mine set to run about every 30 minutes or so -- and it's been great! Really seems to keep memory freed up -- and I've had no problems with it whatsoever.

Sure wish there were something similar for "my own" memory :D

  9. Firefox 2.0.0.18 released.

    Fixed in Firefox 2.0.0.18:

MFSA 2008-58 Parsing error in E4X default namespace

MFSA 2008-57 -moz-binding property bypasses security checks on codebase principals

    MFSA 2008-56 nsXMLHttpRequest::NotifyEventListeners() same-origin violation

MFSA 2008-55 Crash and remote code execution in nsFrameManager

MFSA 2008-54 Buffer overflow in http-index-format parser

MFSA 2008-53 XSS and JavaScript privilege escalation via session restore

MFSA 2008-52 Crashes with evidence of memory corruption (rv:1.9.0.4/1.8.1.18)

MFSA 2008-50 Crash and remote code execution via __proto__ tampering

MFSA 2008-49 Arbitrary code execution via Flash Player dynamic module unloading

MFSA 2008-48 Image stealing via canvas and HTTP redirect

MFSA 2008-47 Information stealing via local shortcut files

  10. There's a small little app called CleanMem that has been discussed on this forum before. I've used it for quite some time and it works amazingly well for me. It's not a memory "cleaner" per se, but it works to periodically release memory that other apps forget to release after they are closed. There's a complete explanation on the site -- you can read about it before making your own decision. By the way . . . it's free.
